Both sides present case in trial against woman accused of killing Bradenton ‘Peace Walker' in crash

BRADENTON, Fla. - Closing statements are scheduled to take place on Thursday in the trial of a woman accused in a hit-and-run that killed a Bradenton man known by neighbors as the "Peace Walker."
Manatee County prosecutors and defense attorneys for Teresa Zeppi finished calling witnesses on Wednesday, as both sides made it clear what story they hope the jury believes.

The backstory
Florida Highway Patrol investigators have said Zeppi was behind the wheel of her Lincoln Navigator when she hit Joseph Dralus, Sr., 82, in April 2020. Dralus died less than a month later.
It took two years for FHP to arrest Zeppi. Investigators said she didn't immediately stop following the crash, eventually pulling over about 500 feet down the road. Prosecutors showed jurors home security video the State said shows Zeppi checking her vehicle for damage, before leaving the scene.

Both of Dralus' sons testified during the trial, explaining their part in the investigation. Christopher Dralus said he provided investigators with his father's toothbrush and hairbrush for DNA comparisons.

"Initially I was going to provide them his ashes, but I was told...they weren't able to get DNA from ashes, so they asked if I could come up with a hairbrush, toothbrush, anything with his DNA on it, which I knew I could come up with a toothbrush and a hairbrush," Christopher Dralus said Wednesday. "He was a very hard worker, provided for his family, loved his family very much and loved being outdoors, as my brother had stated earlier and loved to do his walks on a daily basis."
A day earlier, Joseph Dralus, Jr., testified he searched the Northwest Bradenton community for the vehicle that hit his father, eventually finding Zeppi's parked in her driveway.

Prosecutors have said Zeppi's vehicle had front-end damage and DNA taken from the SUV matched the victim's.
"The swabs from the hood slash fender, the swabs from the headlight and the swabs from the passenger side bumper all had DNA that I was able to make interpretations and comparisons to," said Kaleigh Brownell, a DNA analyst for the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
The other side
Defense attorneys, however, had their own crash scene reconstruction expert take the stand, who said he believes FHP identified the wrong vehicle.

"My opinion in this particular case is this Lincoln Navigator was not the vehicle that struck Mr. Dralus," said Sean O'Leary, the defense's crash scene expert, who was asked how he came to that conclusion. "Primarily the lack of damage to the vehicle, especially in the areas that I would expect to see them, knowing the type of injuries that Mr. Dralus sustained."
Zeppi nearly avoided trial, initially agreeing to a plea deal. Prosecutors withdrew that offer late last month.

FHP searching for suspects after high-speed crash, chase on I-95
The Brief Three suspects fled after a suspected street race and crash. No injuries were reported, but one motorist's vehicle was hit. Brevard deputies and FHP deployed K-9 and air units in the search. VIERA, Fla. - Florida Highway Patrol troopers are searching for multiple suspects who fled on foot after a high-speed crash on Interstate 95 in Brevard County. What we know The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a suspected street racing incident that led to a crash on I-95 in Brevard County. The crash occurred near State Road 520 in Cocoa. The three occupants fled the vehicle on foot and remain at large. What we don't know Authorities have not released the identities of the suspects or confirmed whether the vehicle was stolen. The backstory The crash happened after the vehicle in question was allegedly racing near Exit 191 in Viera. Brevard County deputies and FHP responded swiftly, deploying air and K-9 units. What they're saying The incident began near Exit 191 in Viera and ended roughly 10 miles north at State Road 520 in Cocoa. Investigators say the suspects had been racing on the highway before their car crashed, prompting all three occupants to run from the scene. A woman identified only as Sabrina said her vehicle was sideswiped by the Charger during the crash. "All of a sudden, this Dodge Charger-looking car just smashed into the side of my car, took out the whole side front end," she said. "I'm blown away right now. I'm in shock." She described a heavy law enforcement presence immediately following the crash. "They're searching for them, running around with ARs and everything," she said. The Brevard County Sheriff's Office responded with patrol deputies, K-9 units, and an aviation team to assist FHP. "Our deputies responded along with our K9s and our aviation unit," said sheriff's spokesperson Tod Goodyear. Two sheriff's office patrol vehicles were damaged while responding to the scene. No injuries were reported. "Luckily, in this case, there were no accidents on I-95 involved in this pursuit," Goodyear said. "The only accident was the vehicle itself." Neighbors cite ‘dangerous' speeding in neighborhood where hit-and-run driver killed Kissimmee woman
Florida Highway Patrol troopers are investigating a deadly hit-and-run crash that happened in Osceola County Wednesday morning. The crash was reported just before 6:30 a.m. on Florida Parkway near Birchwood Circle. Troopers said a 40-year-old Kissimmee woman was struck by a vehicle while running in the northbound lane of Florida Parkway. The driver who struck her fled the scene. Neighbors said the driver leaving shocked them, but the crash didn't. 'It's very dangerous,' said Esther Colon. Colon and her neighbor, Rebecca Hernandez, said drivers sometimes go 70 mph, despite the speed limit being 30 mph. 'We always run across. Even if we don't see cars, we run,' Colon said. 'Sometimes they pass so fast you don't have time to look or see them. It's very very, very dangerous.' Their homes are right in front of the fatal crash scene. 'It was really bad this morning,' Hernandez said. The victim was transported to Osceola Regional Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her name was not released. What we know The deadly crash took place at 6:22 a.m. on Wednesday in a neighborhood on Florida Parkway, south of Birchwood Circle in Kissimmee. The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says an unknown vehicle was traveling northbound on Florida Parkway, approaching East Bircwood Circle, while a woman may have been running on Florida Parkway in the northbound lane ahead of the vehicle. Troopers say the vehicle hit the 40-year-old woman and then fled the scene. The woman was taken to the hospital and died.
