Watch: India will build its own space station, says PM Modi in Independence Day speech
In a big push to self-reliance, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced on India's 79th Independence Day that the country is working on building its own space station under the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision.
PM Modi congratulated Indian astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla on the success of the Axiom Mission 4, where he spent 20 days at the International Space Station (ISS). The mission, launched with the collaboration of NASA, SpaceX, ISRO, and Axiom Space, is part of India's preparations for Gaganyaan 2027.

India reportedly spent Rs 548 crore for Shukla's seat, as part of the Gaganyaan mission, which has a total budget of Rs 20,000 crore aimed at sending three astronauts into low Earth orbit following a series of uncrewed test flights. Prime Minister Modi also highlighted that over 300 start-ups are now actively contributing to the country's growing space sector.
India's space ambitions have expanded significantly in recent years, with milestones such as the successful Chandrayaan-3 lunar landing and the launch of the Aditya-L1 solar mission. These achievements not only demonstrate technological capability but also position India as a competitive force in global space exploration. The government continues to promote private sector involvement and international collaboration to accelerate innovation and expand the nation's presence in space.

Bengaluru: Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (BMRCL) is yet to receive the Rs 450 crore reimbursement promised by the state govt in 2017-18 for the Yellow Line's double-decker flyover between Ragigudda and Central Silk Board. The design change was approved on the assurance that the govt would bear the cost of the road flyover component. The city's first double-decker flyover — built after demolishing the Jayadeva flyover — took years to complete. In July 2024, BMRCL partially opened the 5km road flyover from Ragigudda to Silk Board, including ramps built around the Silk Board junction, for motorists travelling towards Silk Board. According to sources, BMRCL has repeatedly sought reimbursement, including during high-power committee (HPC) meetings, but funds haven't been released. In Namma Metro projects, the state and central govts share costs, but road components within Metro projects fall under the state's responsibility. CUMTA to roll out app to integrate metro, bus, last-mile connectivity
Chennai: Chennai unified metropolitan transport authority (CUMTA) will roll out a single ticketing app in the first week of September to integrate Metro Rail, MTC buses, Namma Yatri autos, and cabs. MRTS and suburban trains will be added later this year. While cities like Mumbai and Bengaluru already have integrated ticketing for buses and metros, Chennai's app will make it the first initiative in India to bring cabs, autos, buses, metros, and trains onto one platform. For example, a commuter travelling from Nandanam to VR Mall can open the app, whose name is yet to be finalised, enter start and end points, and receive the best route. This could mean taking the metro to Koyambedu and then a Namma Yatri auto to the mall, with a single QR code generated for the entire journey. Once the commuter exits at Koyambedu, the auto will be booked automatically, with payment for the auto made separately. If this app books an auto automatically, that worry is gone." Ahead of Bihar polls, BJP puts 'backwards' on its priority list
PM Narendra Modi NEW DELHI: PM Narendra Modi on Friday announced plans for a grand celebration of the second birth centenary of renowned 19th century social reformer Jyotiba Phule, in what can be seen as an important gesture to OBCs who revere the anti-caste activist, who also championed women's education. "In the near future, we will be marking the 200th birth anniversary of the great social reformer Jyotiba Phule. We are going to begin the celebrations for this anniversary. Phule's principles and the mantra "priority to the backward" are an inspiration for us," said Modi. The proposed celebrations mark the elevation of Phule, who was born into Mali caste, to the national pantheon. BJP included Phule and his wife Savitribai, known for her 'passionate and tireless' advocacy for women's education, among its gallery of icons long ago. But Modi's plans for his bicentenary turn the embrace into a warm hug. Modi said his govt is working to implement Phule's mantra. "By giving priority to the backward, we want to reach the heights of transformation. We want to put in our utmost effort for this.
