Pakistan envoy at UN urges end to Gaza blockade, calls it collective punishment by starvation
Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on the humanitarian situation in the war-torn Palestinian territory, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmed emphasized the dire consequences of the blockade, which has been in place since March this year.
The blockade has severely restricted the entry of food, fuel and medical supplies, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in the region.
According to the World Health Organization, the blockade has led to severe shortages of essential supplies, with reports indicating that approximately 470,000 people are facing significant levels of hunger.
'The blockade imposed since 2nd March must be lifted,' Ahmed said. 'Humanitarian access is not a favor – it is a legal obligation. Aid convoys and medical teams must be protected and allowed to operate freely and safely.'
'The normalization of starvation as a weapon of war is a crime,' he continued. 'Collective punishment must end, and accountability must be ensured. The Gaza Reconstruction Plan must be fully and actively supported, and no forced displacement of Gazans must be tolerated.'
The ambassador's remarks come amid escalating concerns over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The situation has been described as a deliberate starvation of a civilian population as a method of warfare by various humanitarian organizations.
UN agencies have reported that the blockade has resulted in the closure of bakeries and the depletion of food stocks, leaving the population with limited access to basic necessities.
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) has also highlighted the challenges faced in delivering aid, noting that humanitarian supplies have not entered Gaza for several weeks.
Ambassador Ahmed called upon the international community to take decisive action to alleviate the suffering of the Gazan people and to uphold the principles of international humanitarian law.

In his meeting with the DRC president, the planning minister said that Pakistan wanted to promote trade and exports with China, according to Radio Pakistan. Lu expressed confidence in Pakistan's strategy to become an export-oriented economy. Besides economy, China and Pakistan have also been longtime defense partners. Islamabad this year said its Chinese-supplied jets had shot down six Indian aircraft, including three French-made Rafale fighters, in the four-day military standoff between Pakistan and India in May, drawing interest for analysts and governments alike. While India has admitted losses, but it has not specified the number of aircraft lost to Pakistan, with some observers seeing this as a symbol of Beijing's rising military might. Pakistan accounts for around 63 percent of China's arms exports, according to Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Palestinian administrative prisoner dies in Israeli jail in ‘unknown' circumstances
LONDON: A 20-year-old Palestinian prisoner died on Sunday in an Israeli jail after nearly three months since his arrest, reported the Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs and the Palestinian Prisoners Society. Ahmad Said Saleh Tazazaa, from the town of Jenin in the northern occupied West Bank, was detained on May 6. He had been sentenced to administrative detention, a practice that allows Israeli authorities to hold individuals in prison without trial for several months, with the possibility of indefinite extensions. The groups said that the circumstances surrounding Tazazaa's death in the Megiddo prison 'remain unknown.' His death brings the total number of identified Palestinian prisoners and detainees who have died in Israeli detention since October 2023 to 76 individuals, including 46 from the occupied Gaza Strip. The last two years have been among the deadliest for Palestinian prisoners, according to the commission and the PPS. Since Israel's illegal occupation of the Palestinian territories began in 1967, 313 political prisoners have died while in detention. US confirms death of an American in West Bank; family blames Israeli settler arson
The US State Department on Sunday confirmed an American citizen had died this week in the West Bank, with family and Palestinian officials attributing his death to arson by Israeli settlers. The Palestinian Authority and witnesses reported on Thursday that Israeli settlers had set fire to homes and cars in the West Bank village of Silwad, the latest attack in the occupied territory. Khamis Ayyad, 41, died from smoke inhalation due to the fires, the Palestinian health ministry said. Speaking Friday at a press conference in Chicago, Ayyad's family said he had moved to the West Bank several years ago with his wife and children, but continued to work for an American company. He is at least the second American citizen killed in West Bank settler violence in July, after a 20-year-old man was beaten to death while visiting family in the town of Sinjil. Mike Huckabee, the US ambassador to Israel, demanded Israel investigate that killing, calling it a 'criminal and terrorist act,' but has yet to comment on the death of Ayyad. It added that Israeli police had launched an investigation. Asked for comment on the latest death, a State Department spokesperson said 'we can confirm the death of a US citizen in the town of Silwad in the West Bank,' without naming Ayyad.
