China moves to tame ‘irrational competition' as EV price war persists
Beijing has poured vast state funds into the EV sector, supporting the development and production of less polluting battery-powered vehicles.
But a price war has left many startups bust as firms flood the domestic market with low-cost cars and trade-in schemes, offering huge discounts to customers to give up their old auto for a new one.
Domestic criticism has mounted in recent months against intra-industry 'involution' — a popular tag used to describe the race to outcompete that ends up nowhere.
A meeting of top officials in Beijing — chaired by Premier Li Qiang — called yesterday for tighter price monitoring and improving long-term regulation of competition in the sector, state news agency Xinhua said.
Officials called for stronger order in the new energy vehicle market to 'curb irrational competition' and spur more healthy development, Xinhua said.
'It is necessary to... strengthen industry self-discipline' and help companies enhance their competitiveness through technological innovation, the agency quoted officials as saying.
The China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, a top industry group, warned in May that 'disorderly' competition would exacerbate harmful rivalry and hurt growth.
Analyst Bill Bishop wrote in his Sinocism newsletter that the wording of yseterday's readout could suggest Beijing will place 'price controls' on electric vehicles.
'The language on the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry was tough, in another sign that the government is going to intervene to rectify the 'irrational competition' in the industry,' he wrote. — AFP

UAE telecom services trade grows in 2024: official data
ABU DHABI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE)'s trade in telecommunication services grew by 4.3 percent in 2024, reaching 10.2 billion Emirati dirham (2.78 billion U.S. dollars), up from 9.8 billion dirham in 2023, according to data released on Monday by the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center. The growth was primarily driven by strong performance in the fourth quarter of 2024, which recorded a year-on-year increase of 12.95 percent, bringing quarterly trade in telecom services to 2.70 billion dirham. The data showed that telecom service exports rose by 6.49 percent in 2024 to 4.9 billion dirham, while imports increased by 2.38 percent to 5.3 billion dirham. The fourth quarter accounted for the largest share of annual trade at 26.45 percent, followed by the third quarter at 25.34 percent, the second quarter at 25.05 percent, and the first quarter at 23.17 percent. The robust growth in telecom services reflects the sector's strategic importance in supporting the digital economy, e-commerce expansion, and technological infrastructure development in the UAE. The UAE also ranked among the top globally in 17 key indicators related to digital transformation in 2024 and 2025, according to various international reports. The 2025 World Competitiveness Yearbook by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) ranked the UAE first globally in indicators such as digital transformation in companies, internet usage, and technological skills. Additionally, the UAE ranked third globally in terms of legislative support for technology, and fifth in financing technological development. It also topped international rankings in telecom network coverage and internet usage, according to reports from the United Nations and the World Economic Forum. The telecom services covered in the report include voice, video, and data transmission via telephone, email, fax, satellite broadcasting, business network services, virtual meetings, and mobile and internet-based communications. The figures do not include the value of the information transmitted.

Shadrack Maluki elected new Olympics Kenya president
NAIROBI, July 21 (Xinhua) -- Kenya's judo chief Shadrack Maluki was elected as the country's new Olympic president following the delayed election conducted in the capital Nairobi on Monday. Maluki narrowly beat incumbent secretary general Francis Mutuku in the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) election. Following a protracted process that saw the exercise aborted twice, in April and June, 27 local federations were cleared to vote, with each bearing a single ballot. Anwar's constitutional reference appeal for case management tomorrow
Anwar Ibrahim wants the Court of Appeal to refer eight legal questions, which he said arise from a civil suit brought by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, to the Federal Court for determination. PUTRAJAYA : The Court of Appeal has brought forward case management of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's constitutional reference appeal to tomorrow, with a view to disposing of the case on an expedited basis. Anwar is appealing against the High Court's refusal to refer eight legal questions – which he claims arise from a civil suit brought by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther – to the Federal Court for determination. An e-mail sent out by senior assistant registrar Ahmad Izuddin Fajri Fakrullah, sighted by FMT, said the case management was being brought forward as the appeals court bench had indicated this morning that an early hearing should be held. As such, Izuddin said case management, previously scheduled for Sept 2, has been brought forward to tomorrow. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, appearing for Yusoff, who filed his suit in 2021 against Anwar over an alleged assault, confirmed the matter. 'The case management will be held online,' he said when contacted. Earlier today, a three-member bench chaired by Justice Ruzima Ghazali said the stay should be granted as Anwar had shown special circumstances. Ruzima, who sat with Justices Wong Kian Kheong and Lim Hock Leng, however, said parties were at liberty to apply for an early hearing date. On June 4, High Court Justice Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's reference application and directed that the trial proceed on the seven days previously set between June 16 and June 25. In her decision, Roz Mawar said none of the questions posed in the application had crossed the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 to justify a referral to the apex court. In a 21-page judgment, she said the application was misconceived as to the jurisdiction of the courts and based on speculative doctrines with no constitutional footing. On June 10, the Court of Appeal granted Anwar an interim stay pending today's hearing of the prime minister's stay application. The prime minister wants the apex court to determine whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. Yusoff's suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 22, 2022. A grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, Yusoff claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.
