
Priority projects in roads, railways and maritime must be shortlisted in first phase: Ahsan
His remarks came in the second consultative meeting of the Working Group on Multimodal Connectivity that was held with participation from key government stakeholders, including the Ministry of Commerce, Ministry of Finance, Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Ministry of Communications, Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Maritime Affairs, and the Aviation Division.
During the meeting, the working group presented a comprehensive review of currently operational trade corridors and proposed new routes to strengthen regional connectivity.
The Planning minister reviewed the existing corridors, while discussions were held on proposed road, rail and maritime linkages.
In follow-up to the previous meeting, the Ministry of Communications had been tasked with reviewing existing transport infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and policy instruments along identified trade corridors.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Maritime Affairs, Ministry of Railways, and the Aviation Division were assigned to evaluate relevant regional and international agreements that could facilitate economic integration through new routes.
Highlighting Turkmenistan as a comparatively shorter and viable transit option, he directed that a thorough assessment of this route's feasibility be undertaken.
Reflecting on his recent visit to Turkmenistan for the 1st ECO Ministerial Forum on Sustainable Development, the minister noted the country's keen interest in fostering regional connectivity.
On a query regarding Turkmenistan's potential use of Gwadar Port, the minister was apprised by the Ministry of Maritime Affairs that the port is operational, and 100 acres of land have been allocated for an off-dock terminal.
The PC-1 for its development is under preparation for proposed inclusion in PSDP 2025–26. Recalling the prospect of Gwadar–Oman sea connectivity as discussed in previous meeting, the Minister advised the concerned Ministry to share progress on this initiative in the next meeting.
Minister Ahsan Iqbal further emphasised the need for effective phasing in the planning of the multi modal connectivity network to identify infrastructural and policy challenges that may arise in the development of new trade corridors.
The Ministry of Communications presented a three years' summary of the movement of NLC trucks operating through three key trade corridors: the Trans-Afghan Corridor, the North-South Corridor, and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
Ministry of Communications briefed the minister that in 2023, Pakistan transported the highest number of trucks to Uzbekistan, as compared to other Central Asian countries.
In 2024, Afghanistan took the lead as the primary recipient of Pakistani trucked exports. The official from Ministry of Communications also briefed the Minister that current figures for 2025 indicate that the top three countries to have received Pakistani trucked exports so far had been China, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan, respectively.
'These trends reflect Pakistan's growing engagement with neighboring markets and underscore the importance of developing efficient multimodal trade corridors to enhance regional connectivity and economic integration, stated the Planning Minister.'
Only uplift-oriented projects be included in PSDP: minister
The Minister also stated, 'Priority projects in roads, railways and maritime sector must be shortlisted in first phase of multi-modal network, which can be done by effectively analysing missing links across the region. This will help Pakistan establish trade connectivity with the energy-rich Central Asia.'
He instructed Ministry of Railways, Ministry of Communication and Ministry of Maritime affairs to carry out extensive consultative reviews of key infrastructure projects to identify the projects that need to be recommended for phase one.
'Execution of the multimodal connectivity network will help Pakistan diversify its trade mix while providing Central Asian nations with access to South Asian markets via Gwadar, Karachi, and new routes. This mutually beneficial arrangement has immense potential to strengthen economic interdependence and regional connectivity.'
Reflecting on the potential of trading with Central Asian region, the minister emphasised that Central Asia's collective GDP of over $207 billion and a population of 66 million represent a substantial market for Pakistani exports, including textiles, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural products. Strengthening trade and investment linkages with these countries can lay the foundation for a regional economic bloc that benefits all stakeholders, he stressed.
Recommendations made by respective departments involved in the joint working group included execution of a cross-institutional study to assess the potential benefits and challenges of establishing international corridors. The group also proposed an in-depth economic impact study to evaluate the benefits of trade routes from Pakistan to Russia via Central Asia.
The meeting concluded with Planning Minister's direction to all line ministries to finalise a comprehensive report on the proposed multimodal connectivity framework with phase one priority projects for submission to the prime minister.

China, HK stocks edge higher ahead of tariff deadline
HONG KONG: China and Hong Kong stocks rose on Monday as investors focussed on US-China trade truce developments, while shrugging off weekend data that highlighted persistent deflationary pressures in the world's second-largest economy. At market close, the Shanghai Composite index rose 0.3 percent to 3,647.55, the highest such close since Dec 16, 2021. The blue-chip CSI300 index was up 0.4 percent. However, fresh data showed factory-gate prices falling more than forecast as deflationary pressures persist across the Chinese economy, weighing on the sentiment. Leading gains onshore on Monday, the liquor sector jumped 2.5 percent, and AI-related stocks added 1.8 percent. Shares of lithium maker Tianqi and Ganfeng surged to near the 10 percent daily trading limits, after battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL) said it had suspended production at a major lithium mine. In Hong Kong, the benchmark Hang Seng Index was up 0.2 percent at 24,906.81. The Tech index was flat, while Hang Seng Automobile Index rallied 1.9 percent. Investors are also awaiting earnings reports from market heavyweights later this week, including Tencent Meituan, and Alibaba. Around the region, MSCI's Asia ex-Japan stock index was firmer by 0.30 percent while Japan's Nikkei index was up 1.9 percent.

Asian currencies steady with US data
BENGALURU: Asian currencies held largely steady against a softer dollar on Monday, as investors refrained from taking big bets ahead of the US July inflation report and expiry of a US tariff deadline on China. The Philippine peso, Taiwan dollar and South Korean won slipped between 0.1 percent and 0.3 percent, while most other currencies were little changed. An MSCI index of global emerging market currencies was largely flat, while the dollar index dropped 0.2 percent following a 0.4 percent decline last week. Market players braced for US consumer price data, due on Tuesday, for clues on the Federal Reserve's rate-cut path, with a hotter-than-expected report likely to jolt markets by tempering hopes of near-term easing. US President Donald Trump's August 12 deadline for a US-China deal also loomed over markets, with chip policy at the centre of the standoff. Expectations are growing for yet another extension. US imports from Southeast Asia's biggest economies now carry tariffs of about 19 percent, well below the levels initially threatened. Last week, the Trump administration slapped tariffs of 10 percent to 50 percent on dozens of countries and tacked on 40 percent duties for products found to be illegally rerouted to conceal their origin. 'We expect emerging Asian currencies will benefit from US dollar softness in the second half of year. In particular, domestically driven economies with relatively higher yields on offer could be better positioned to gain from dollar weakness,' said Lloyd Chan, FX strategist at MUFG. Elsewhere, changes at the helm of key US monetary policy bodies also drew attention. While Trump's Fed governor pick, Stephen Miran, may not be in place to weigh in on a September cut, the race for a new chair has widened to about 10 contenders. Stock markets advanced, with Taiwan up 0.5 percent, while Indonesia and Malaysia climbed 0.5 percent and 0.8 percent, respectively. The Philippine central bank signalled it may deliver the first of two rate cuts planned for this year at its August 28 meeting, with inflation staying subdued. Manila shares dropped 1.3 percent. Thailand's stock markets were closed for a public holiday. The Bank of Thailand's policy rate decision is due later this week, with analysts at Nomura expecting the central bank to leave its policy rate unchanged.

PCJCCI hails FBR's move to withdraw ‘excessive' tax measures
LAHORE: Pakistan-China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCJCCI) strongly welcomes the Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) recent decision to withdraw the excessive and impractical tax measures proposed in the Federal Budget 2025–26. This reversal marks a critical step towards restoring business confidence and stabilizing Pakistan's fragile economic landscape. This decision, made possible through the direct support and intervention of Field Marshal General Asim Munir, reflects a deep understanding of the economic challenges facing the private sector and a genuine commitment to inclusive, sustainable growth. Zafar Iqbal, Acting President of PCJCCI, stated that the proposed tax measures would have directly impacted over 3.5 million small and medium enterprises (SMEs), threatened over 1.2 million jobs, and discouraged both local and foreign investment. Field Marshal Asim Munir's timely action has not only prevented this fallout but also sent a strong message of solidarity with the business community. He further added that Pakistan's GDP growth for FY 2024–25 was recorded at 2.4%, already below the projected 3.5% due to inflationary pressures and high interest rates. The industrial sector, contributing 19.1% to GDP, had shown a decline of 1.3% in the last quarter, mainly due to reduced business activity and investment uncertainty. Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) from China declined by 18% in FY 2024 compared to the previous year, largely attributed to tax unpredictability and regulatory instability. Salahuddin Hanif, Secretary General PCJCCI said that the reversal of these policies paves the way for enhanced bilateral cooperation under CPEC Phase II and renewed investor confidence from China. We are confident that this business-friendly shift will lead to increased joint ventures, job creation, and SME development. He also added that we reaffirm our commitment to contributing towards a resilient and globally competitive economy through strengthened Pakistan-China business collaboration.
