Adams reflects on 11th-hour Supercross call-up
Enter Drew Adams.
At 16, Adams made his AMA Pro Racing debut last summer when he motored to 15-11 motos scores for 12th overall at the curtain dropping Ironman National. Debut number two for the kid out of Chattanooga, Tennessee came at the third round of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross season when his two teammates – Marchbanks and Masterpool – suffered injuries. Drafted into action by team principal Mitch Payton for the second round at Angel Stadium, the rookie rode encouragingly well, starting the main event in sixth and finishing in eighth place.
Forced to put his race face on and go to behind the stating gate as a rookie at the second Angel Stadium 250SX West round, Adams, while admitting he was 'shocked' at times with the speed and fierceness displayed in the classification, was pleased with his debut supercross experience,
'It was sick, you know?' he said. 'I didn't really have any expectations coming in. I just wanted to learn and I think I did just that. I learned a lot, and I think I'm only going to get better every weekend. I'm really looking forward to this weekend. I'm pretty happy coming off of last weekend. Obviously, not many rookies get eighth in their first pro supercross race, so I was happy with it. There are a couple of things that we need to work on, but I'm so very excited for this weekend.'
So how was competing beneath the bright lights at Angel Stadium?
'I was in the B practice all day because it was my first race,' recounted Adams. 'I didn't really get to ride with everybody until the night show. All day I was pretty calm and whatnot. The nerves weren't really high and I was just having a good time. Then we did the hat race and that was super-sick. I got the first heat race when the track was fresh and that was awesome.
'Then lining up for the main event, I was like, 'Man, I'm nervous right now.' It kind of hit me when I was in staging. I was kind of like, 'Phew.' My hands were sweating. It was cold outside, and I was sweating. It just hit me like a freight train. As soon as the gate dropped the adrenaline went up and I forgot about everything after that. I was just out there riding. The day was awesome and I'm happy with how it went.
'The pace is pretty gnarly right now. The season has just stated and right now the pace is super-fast in the beginning. All the guys are going really fast. After you do those four or five sprint laps, you kind of just settle into a smooth and consistent pace. It is definitely a hard pace to conquer, but I got used to it in the heat races.'
As aforementioned, Adams compered in last season's concluding Ironman National in Indiana before making his premiere supercross engagement in Orange County. How did the two different forms of motor racing compare?
'I was actually talking with some friends about this during the week,' Adams said. 'I felt like the Pro Motocross days were longer and it kind of felt more chill. In the outdoors you do practice very early in the morning and then you only get an hour and a half until the first moto. So it's really not that long. And you do a full 30 minutes, and then you get 45 minutes to rest. Then you go do another 30 minutes. I feel like it is a long and short day.
'In supercross you get a lot more time to rest. You're first practice is at 10 am and then the night show gets going around 5:30 or 6:00 o'clock, so you have a long time to rest and take a nap and to eat all your food that you need. I kind of like the layout of supercross. It definitely felt pretty chill. The outdoors is a long, buy hectic day. You know in supercross, the vibe in the pits was really cool. Cool to see the kids smiling all day. The kids dream of going to supercross races. I know I used to, that's for sure. The vibe is just so good. Everybody is having a good time. Then once the opening ceremonies happen, then the vibe completely switches up and you get in the serious mode and the race mode and the fans are acting crazy. It's just a whole hoot out there. I love the vibe at supercross. It's definitely a good vibe.'
Adams continued on to reflect upon what he felt once he pulled off the racetrack immediately after the 250SX West main event.
I thought, 'Damn, that's hard.' That's what I thought,' he said. 'I was sitting there in the pits after and thinking, 'Man, that was one had race, that's for sure.' It started during our main event, too, and that definitely made it 10 times harder. I just kind of took it all in and I was super-pumped with it. I was happy to be where I was.'
In coming to terms with becoming a supercross racer at the 11th hour, Adams forced himself to hold back a bit at Anaheim in order to, 'not chase too much too soon.
'That's the thing about rookies that have been doing good in the amateurs and then coming into the pro classes. They just want to really show everybody what they've got, you know? I think that's a good thing to do, but I also think it doesn't work out all the time. So I just wanted to just go out there and learn and not get hurt and make the good laps. With the weekends now coming up, like Glendale, I want to drop the hammer a little bit. I think you can kind of drop it a little bit more the weekends after your first race.'

Michigan QB Bryce Underwood tops list of freshmen who could make immediate impact
Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood, the nation's No. 1 recruit in his class, has spent months getting ready in hopes of starting the 14th-ranked Wolverines' season opener against New Mexico. If follows an outstanding high school career in which Underwood threw for 11,488 yards and 152 touchdowns while leading Belleville to a 50-4 record and two Michigan state championships. The 6-foot-4 freshman heads our list of freshmen who could make a major impact this season. Underwood arrived on campus in time for spring practice and went 12 of 26 for 187 yards in the spring game, throwing an interception but also delivering an 88-yard touchdown pass to Jalen Hoffman on a reverse flea-flicker. 'I think he's grown every single day since he's been on campus,' Michigan coach Sherrone Moore told reporters at the Big Ten media days event. 'He's been with us since December. Continues to do everything he can to be, one, the best teammate he can be; two, to be the best student he can be; and then, three, to be the best football player that he can be and quarterback that he can be for our football team.' Michigan fans would love to see better quarterback production after the Wolverines followed up their 2023 national championship with an 8-5 season in which they threw more interceptions (13) than touchdown passes (12). Underwood could change that. He was committed to LSU for much of his recruitment but changed his mind and signed with Michigan in December after a sales pitch that included a FaceTime chat with former Michigan quarterback and seven-time Super Bowl winner Tom Brady. He has made quite an early impression on his new coaches. 'He does everything the right way,' Moore said. 'He makes sure that he attacks everything the best way.' Michigan isn't the only Big Ten school that could be starting a freshman quarterback. Maryland freshman Malik Washington was competing with UCLA transfer Justyn Martin and Khristian Martin, who aren't related, as the Terrapins prepare to open their season against Florida Atlantic. Other freshmen who could make immediate contributions: Clemson DT Amare Adams No. 4 Clemson has some experience at defensive tackle with DeMontre Capehart and Peter Woods returning from last year's playoff team, but Adams could be strong enough to earn himself a featured role as well. Adams, who is 6-4 and 310 pounds, was the No. 3 defensive lineman and No. 22 overall prospect in his class according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. 'He's just not a normal freshman,' Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said. 'He's a really, really talented young player.' Another defensive lineman who bears watching is Georgia's Elijah Griffin, who was ranked third overall in the 247Sports Composite. BYU QB Bear Bachmeier BYU has an uncertain quarterback situation following the summertime departure of 2024 starter Jake Retzlaff, who is now at Tulane. Retzlaff's exit left Bachmeier and McCae Hillstead competing for the starting spot. Bachmeier initially signed with Stanford but transferred following the March firing of coach Troy Taylor. Bachmeier isn't the only Big 12 freshman quarterback who could earn an immediate starting role. Julian Lewis was competing with Liberty transfer Kaidon Salter at Colorado. Oregon WR Dakorien Moore This 5-11 wideout accumulated over 3,400 yards receiving and scored 40 touchdowns during his high school career at Duncanville (Texas). The 247Sports Composite had him as the No. 1 wide receiver and No. 4 overall prospect in his class. Moore could provide an immediate boost for an Oregon receiving unit that could use the help with Evan Stewart injured and Jurrion Dickey suspended indefinitely. Stewart, who caught 48 passes for 613 yards and five touchdowns last season, is expected to miss at least part of the season after tearing his patellar tendon in June. LSU CB D.J. Pickett Pickett came to No. 9 LSU from Zephyrhills (Florida) High as the nation's No. 2 cornerback and No. 11 overall prospect in his class, according to the 247Sports Composite. He could provide an immediate upgrade for an LSU defense that intercepted just six passes last season, the lowest total for any Southeastern Conference team. Tennessee OT David Sanders No. 24 Tennessee must replace four starters from the offensive line that helped the Volunteers earn a playoff berth last season. That creates plenty of opportunity for Sanders, who came out of Charlotte, North Carolina, as the 247Sports Composite's No. 6 overall prospect in his class. Sanders, who is 6-6 and 305 pounds, is expected to open the season as Tennessee's starting right tackle. Florida WR Dallas Wilson Wilson provided a tantalizing glimpse of his potential by catching 10 passes for 195 yards in No. 15 Florida's spring game, though he suffered a lower-leg injury that has sidelined him for part of preseason camp. The 6-3 wideout caught 130 passes for 2,424 yards and 30 touchdowns in his high school career in Tampa. Wilson signed with Florida after initially committing to Oregon. He's rated as the nation's No. 35 overall prospect and No. 8 receiver in his class by the 247Sports Composite.

Motocross 2025 250 results, highlights, finish at Unadilla: Jo Shimoda wins third round in five races
Jo Shimoda swept both motos at Unadilla MX in New Berlin, New York, and kept Haiden Deegan from clinching the championship until the season finale. Shimoda was willing to take risks on the rutted and tricky track that Deegan couldn't afford. After the race, Deegan reflected on Shimoda's ride, bemusedly saying, 'That first lap, I was like 'damn, bro, you need to chill.' ' Shimoda continued to ride on the edge to dominate Moto 1 by nearly 40 seconds. He was 13 seconds ahead of Tom Vialle in Moto 2 to score his third win in the last five rounds. Shimoda has not finished worse than second in a moto during the last three rounds. Click here for a recap of Unadilla Deegan had a bigger picture in mind. He could not afford an injury that might keep him off the bike next week at Budds Creek in Mechanicsville, Maryland, because a surging Shimoda would undoubtedly have the speed to overcome a 51-point gap in the remaining four motos. Deegan tested the limits of the track in qualification. He crashed in Qualification 1 and decided discretion was a better course for the race. Finishing second in Moto 1 and third in Moto 2, he was third overall. Deegan now has a 43-point lead over Shimoda. Vialle finished third with moto results of fourth and second. Vialle has shaken the effects of his miserable RedBud and Spring Creek rounds and has back-to-back podiums. With one round remaining, he can still move up a position to third in SuperMotocross points if he gains three on Garrett Marchbanks in the Pro Motocross finale. Relive Moto 1 Seth Hammaker has been on a rollercoaster for four rounds. He finished 34th at Spring Creek, and then thought he had put that behind him with a fourth at Washougal. He failed to back his top-five up with a 10th at Ironman, but found speed again at Unadilla to finish fourth overall with a third-place finish in Moto 1 and a sixth in Moto 2. Julien Beaumer was happy to be in contention for a top five after five consecutive rounds of overall results of 14th or worse. During his struggles, he discovered that a hard crash earlier in the season had diminished his eyesight slightly, and that affected his rhythm. With contact lenses in place, Beaumer finished sixth in Moto 1 and fourth in Moto 2.
