Miley Cyrus reflects on the 2018 fire that destroyed her $2.52M Malibu home: ‘The biggest blessing'

New York Post08-05-2025

Miley Cyrus is revisiting the moment her life — and home — went up in flames. Years on, and stronger, she has a glass-half-full perspective on the tragedy.
During a recent Q&A at her 'Something Beautiful' event in New York, the pop singer described the destruction of her Malibu compound in the 2018 Woolsey Fire as a turning point.
The $2.52 million property, which included a four-bedroom residence and her personal recording studio, Rainbowland, was reduced to ash just weeks before she married Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth.

'When my house burned down, that was the biggest blessing I've ever had in my life, actually,' Cyrus said, according to People.

'Losing everything and being able to rebuild, and to be able to be purposeful and choose every piece that I'm gonna collect — or also just about the people in my life.'
The 2-acre estate wasn't just a home. It was the birthplace of her recording career, where Cyrus, then a teen, laid down tracks for her first album in 2005.
8 Despite the devastation, Cyrus, now 32, described the fire as 'the biggest blessing' of her life, saying it allowed her to rebuild with intention and reevaluate the people and things she surrounded herself with.

But the fire brought more than physical loss.

'A lot of my relationships also burned down,' she said. 'That again just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude.'
Cyrus and Hemsworth had spent nearly a decade in an on-and-off relationship before marrying in December 2018. By August 2019, they had separated, and their divorce was finalized in early 2020.
At the time of the fire, Cyrus was filming Netflix's popular 'Black Mirror' in South Africa.

'Actually as my house was burning down I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs strapped to a bed,' she shared on TikTok in 2023.
The following day, she was on set again filming a dance-heavy music video. 'The show must go on,' she said.
Looking back, she said she would have told her younger self to embrace the difficult times.

Cyrus, who stepped back from touring in 2023, is now preparing to release her ninth studio album, 'Something Beautiful,' on May 30.
The project will be accompanied by a visual film premiering June 6 at the Tribeca Film Festival. One of the album's eight producers is Maxx Morando, drummer for the band Lilly, whom Cyrus began dating in 2021.

'This album has to start with me loving it,' she said. 'Whether you know it or not, it's gonna be coming through the speakers when you're listening.'

Hemsworth, 35, has since entered a quieter chapter.
He began dating Australian model Gabriella Brooks in late 2019, though the couple didn't appear publicly together until the following year.
Brooks made her runway debut at Australia Fashion Week in 2023. Cue fashion brand director Kate Bielenberg called her 'such a great girl' and praised her as the embodiment of 'cool girl vibes.'

Maria Menounos and YouTuber Rebecca Zamolo Get Candid About Feeling Connected to Their Babies in Surrogacy (Exclusive)

Maria Menounos and YouTuber Rebecca Zamolo have a candid conversation about the struggles of surrogacy in an upcoming episode of the journalist's podcast "Heal Squad" Menounos welcomed her baby daughter Athena via surrogacy, while Zamolo is expecting her second baby, her first via surrogacy Menounos shared her honest thoughts about connecting with her daughter after welcoming her with a surrogateMaria Menounos and YouTuber Rebecca Zamolo are getting candid about surrogacy. In an exclusive clip shared with PEOPLE ahead of the Wednesday, June 11 episode of Menounos' podcast Heal Squad, the actress, 47, spoke with the YouTuber in an honest conversation about the difficulties of surrogacy. Menounos, who welcomed her daughter Athena in June 2023 via surrogacy, was asked by Zamolo, who is currently expecting her second baby but her first via surrogacy, if she had difficulty connecting to her daughter after she was born. "So my question is, was it hard for you to feel a connection? Because for me, the first pregnancy, I felt every kick, every movement. I felt prepared, not prepared but like it had been nine months in the making," Zamolo begins. "I was nesting, I was feeling like this human was coming," she continues. "But in this one with surrogacy, I forget what week we're on, and all of a sudden, the baby's coming. I worry that I'm not going to feel the connection. How did that feel, the day you had her?' Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. In a lengthy response, Menounos recounts how she felt just before welcoming her daughter, noting that things might be different for her because she wasn't able to carry a pregnancy. "But I was really lucky. Kim Kardashian really helped me on this journey because it's really scary to give up control to do all of this, to have somebody else carrying your child," Menounos said. "And she was so chill about everything that she made me more chill about everything because I saw that it worked." She went on to say that she did things like record her voice for her surrogate to play to her belly, in the hopes that her daughter would become familiar with her voice. "And then, yeah it's weird. Time just flies and you're like, 'Okay, we're getting close.' And then when it was time to get close, they lived in Wisconsin," explained Menounos. "So we had to go to Wisconsin and we were on baby watch for like three weeks because we thought she was coming early and then she just really enjoyed the womb and stayed a little longer." "And then when it came to the day, I'll never forget. My husband woke me up and he's like, 'It's time.' And I'm like, 'Wait. What?' " Menounos remembered. "You know when you wake up from the dead and you're just like, 'I don't even know where I am and now you're telling me we're having a baby?' I was just literally spinning in a circle, didn't even know what to do or where to go." She explained that even though she's been preparing for so long to welcome her daughter, when the actual day came, it almost didn't feel real. When her daughter was born, she was still in her embryonic sac, which Menounos says is "very, very rare." "I watched her come out. They peeled it off of her. And so they say that those babies have a vision that nobody has. They see things no one can see. It's really special," she says. "And so I grabbed her, with a little towel, with a little blanket thingy, and I had her on my chest instantly. And it was unbelievable. And I just kept kissing her and telling her I loved her, and it was so. I mean, it was like part shocking, part joy, part just like. I don't know how to explain it." After doing skin-to-skin and taking her daughter out in the sun for the first time, Menounos let her surrogate carry her for a minute. "But it was really special, and I don't think I could be more connected to her. But I also don't know any better," says Menounos. "So I have to leave space for the fact that you have had the other experience. And I know Khloé Kardashian's talked about it and said she didn't feel it. Did you hear that? So I'm sure that scared you.' 'Yeah, you know there's not a lot of people that talk about the surrogacy, so definitely,' Zamolo responds. Menounos continued to say that her best piece of advice is to just focus on feeling grateful rather than spiraling about any fears you might have. "So I mean, the best thing I could say is just try to release any of those fears because ... and if you can just stay in gratitude, they say that fear and gratitude can't live in the same space," Menounos explained. "So if just stay in gratitude — you're having a baby. It's a miracle. And just stay focused on that." "Imagine how good that feels, whereas the fears of 'Am I going to be connected?' Now you're also potentially manifesting more of that because you're staying in that vibration," she continued. "So just stay in this vibration as much as you can because it's your son. Or your daughter, whatever it is, I don't know. It's your baby. And you're going to foster that connection and you're going to be close no matter what. So. That's my thought.' Katy Perry & Orlando Bloom Reportedly Worked Through 'Tension' After Her Latest Career Setbacks

While Katy Perry and Orlando Bloom have appeared to be nothing but in love in the past few months, new sources are claiming there might be trouble in paradise. According to sources for People, Perry, who released her new album 143 in 2024 and began her 'Lifetimes' world tour a few months ago in April 2025, has been frustrated with the reception to her musical comeback, and it's been starting to affect their relationship. More from SheKnows Glen Powell's Ex Revealed What Really Happened in His PR Relationship With Sydney Sweeney 'Katy was deeply frustrated following the reception of her new album. It made her very stressed,' the source said. 'Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension.' A second source reiterated those feelings. 'She was also disappointed in some of the tour reviews,' the source said. 'It's put stress on their relationship.' As a reminder, Perry and Bloom have been together on and off since 2016. They got engaged three years later in 2019 and welcomed their daughter, Daisy Dove, in August 2020. Prior to these sources, other insiders told the Daily Mail in October that Perry had been looking to Bloom for some good PR amid the backlash. 'She has tried to sell it with her sexuality and use Orlando to help promote it with jokes about their sex life,' the source said. In her episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, for example, the 'Teenage Dream' singer got surprisingly candid about their sex life. 'If I come downstairs and the kitchen is clean, and you've done it all, and you've done all the dishes, and you've closed all the pantry doors, you better be ready to get your d– sucked,' Perry said, per The New York Post. 'That is my love language!' Whether Bloom is onboard or not to join her marketing strategy, it seems the pressure of her career setbacks is starting to take a of SheKnows Keira Knightley's Best Hairstyles Over the Years, From 2001 to Today All About Hugh Jackman & Deborra-Lee Furness' Very Private Kids, Oscar & Ava 15 of Paulina Gretzky's Most Daring Looks to Date

Katy Perry's 'Stress' Over Album and Tour Reportedly Caused 'Tension' with Orlando Bloom: Sources (Exclusive)

Katy Perry has been frustrated amid her 143 album release The singer was "very stressed" over the reception her new music received, a source says, which caused "some tension" in her relationship with fiancé Orlando Bloom "Orlando was understanding," a second source tells PEOPLEKaty Perry and Orlando Bloom's relationship experienced strain amid the singer's latest endeavor. An insider tells PEOPLE, "Katy was deeply frustrated following the lackluster [reception] of her new album," 143, which came out in September. "It made her very stressed. Orlando was understanding, but it did cause some tension." A second source adds, "This was supposed to be Katy's big comeback. She was excited. It's been devastating to watch it fall flat. She's disappointed in the tour reviews. Ticket sales are fine, but nowhere near sold out. It's put stress on their relationship." Reps for Perry and Bloom did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment. Perry's vision for her latest album was creating "a bold, exuberant, celebratory dance-pop album with the symbolic 143 numerical expression of love as a throughline message," she said in a statement at the time. The album title 143 refers to the retro shorthand of "I love you" via pager communication. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. The "Teenage Dream" singer spoke to PEOPLE in February about the negative criticism she received for 143. "You shouldn't read it when it's good. You shouldn't read it when it's bad," she said. Perry, 40, added, "My therapist said something that really changed my life. What anybody thinks about you is none of your business. It's what you think about yourself." She also said she created the album from "a real shift in my life when I became a mother, and I really tapped into that feminine divine energy. The messages on it are celebratory. They're about love." Perry previously experienced situational depression following the criticism stemming from her 2018 album Witness. 'I have had bouts of situational depression, and my heart was broken last year because, unknowingly, I put so much validity in the reaction of the public, and the public didn't react in the way I had expected to … which broke my heart," she said in a February 2018 interview with Vogue Australia. In conjunction with her new album, Perry set off on her Lifetimes Tour in April, less than a month after participating in Jeff Bezos' all-female Blue Origin flight, which received criticism over its cost and its alleged impact on the environment. Perry seemingly addressed the criticism during the opening night of the Lifetimes Tour, asking the crowd in Mexico City: "Has anyone ever called your dreams crazy?" Up next on Perry's tour are shows in Australia through June. Perry then heads to North America making stops throughout the U.S. and Canada through August before heading to South America and Europe. Among the U.S. cities the "E.T." singer will stop in are Denver, San Francisco, Newark, Baltimore, Atlanta, Nashville and Miami. Perry and Bloom, 48, have been together for almost a decade. They got engaged in February 2019 and welcomed their daughter Daisy Dove in August 2020. Most recently, Bloom and Daisy were both present for the Blue Origin flight.
