Capitec Bank, South Africa's largest bank with over 24 million clients, has partnered with leading remittance fintech Mama Money to dramatically reduce the cost and simplify sending money across borders for the country's 2.4 million migrants.

The partnership addresses a critical need in South Africa's financial ecosystem, where migrants from Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe have historically faced high fees and complex processes when sending money home to support their families.
With women comprising over one million of South Africa's migrant population, this partnership will transform how families across the region access financial services. Migrants regularly send billions in remittances across Africa, with traditional banks often charging prohibitive fees that eat into money desperately needed by families.
Traditional bank transfers often cost 8-12% in fees, while Mama Money via Capitec starts from as low as 5%, with processing taking minutes instead of days.
Capitec customers can now access Mama Money's remittance platform directly through their mobile banking app, using the Universal Mama Money Token. Recipients receive a 12-digit token via SMS, allowing them to collect cash from partner locations, including banks and agents across 70+ countries – no bank account required.
"Mama Money and Capitec share the same principles about low-cost financial services to impact customers' lives positively. It's about more than convenience – it's about dignity and fairness for people who work hard to support their families," said Mathieu Coquillon, co-founder of Mama Money. "When someone earning minimum wage has to pay R150 in fees to send R1,000 home, that's money taken directly from a family's food budget."
The collaboration combines Capitec's massive customer base and digital infrastructure with Mama Money's decade of experience in facilitating millions of cross-border transactions across Africa, Asia and Europe.

Aug 11 (Reuters) - Barrick Mining ( opens new tab beat profit expectations for the second quarter and raised its dividend by 50% on Monday, as record-high gold prices helped offset lower production and a $1.04 billion charge from losing control of its Loulo-Gounkoto mine in Mali. The company declared a quarterly dividend of 15 cents per share, up from 10 cents in May. Gold prices averaged $3,220.58 an ounce in the quarter, up 12% from the prior quarter and nearly 40% higher than a year earlier. The metal was buoyed by safe-haven demand as uncertainty over U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff plans and geopolitical tensions stoked inflation concerns. Barrick's average realized gold price surged to $3,295 per ounce in the April-June quarter from $2,344 a year ago. Still, its production decreased to 797,000 ounces in the quarter from 948,000 ounces a year earlier. The company's U.S. shares slid nearly 4% in morning trading, hit by a more than 1% drop in gold prices on Monday that also pulled down other miners. Barrick was forced to suspend operations in mid-January after Mali's military-led government blocked its exports for two months, detained some of its executives and seized three tons of bullion. It also launched arbitration at the World Bank to try to resolve the dispute. Barrick said the Loulo-Gounkoto mine-related loss was partly offset by a $745 million gain from selling its 50% stake in the Donlin Gold project. Its all-in sustaining costs for gold, an industry metric reflecting total expenses, rose to $1,684 per ounce in the reported quarter from $1,498 per ounce. On an adjusted basis, the company earned 47 cents per share in the second quarter, compared with analysts' average expectation of 45 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG.

Just Eat's 4.1 billion euro (£3.6 billion) takeover has been approved by European regulators after buyer Prosus agreed to address its competition concerns. The European Commission said new conditions to the tie-up will protect consumer choice when it comes to ordering food at home. Prosus, a technology firm which is majority-owned by South Africa's Naspers, agreed to buy the Dutch takeaway delivery giant in May. But the EU regulator said it had concerns about the fact that Naspers already has a 28% stake in Delivery Hero, a rival to Just Eat. The deal could reduce competition in the takeaway market and lead to coordination between the two firms, which could have resulted in higher prices for consumers, the Commission said. To address these concerns, Naspers has agreed to reduce its shareholding in Delivery Hero to a 'very low percentage' within 12 months, which it did not disclose, but would make it no longer the biggest shareholder. The regulator said the modified takeover terms eased its competition concerns and allowed it to give it the green light. European Commission executive Teresa Ribera said: 'We had concerns that the acquisition of Just Eat by Naspers could allow the parties to coordinate their behaviour in the food delivery market, reducing competition and consumers choice. 'Today's binding commitments preserve both competition and consumer choice when ordering food at home. 'This decision also sends a clear warning to an industry with recent anti-trust issues: we won't tolerate any anti-competitive behaviour that may harm consumers.' Prosus is expected to be the fourth largest food delivery group in the world following the takeover. The takeaway sector has been the subject of major takeover swoops in recent months, with UK-listed Deliveroo agreeing to be bought by US rival DoorDash for around £2.9 billion. Prosus chief executive Fabricio Bloisi said he was 'thrilled' by the 'swift approval' of the group's acquisition. 'Innovation doesn't wait, and we can now get to work quickly, as AI (artificial intelligence) is rapidly reshaping food delivery,' he said. 'Our ambition is clear: to build a true European tech champion and lead the next chapter in food delivery innovation.'

LAGOS, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Nigeria's Dangote Refinery is importing 4,000 natural-gas powered trucks as part of plans to distribute refined products directly into the local market, the company said. In June, the oil refinery said it will begin directly supplying fuel to retail stations, manufacturers, telecoms firms, and other large users in August, a move that could enhance supply but puts it in direct competition with local fuel traders. Dangote's logistics expansion adds a new push to its market entry for its mammoth 650,000 barrels per day refinery, which is Africa's largest. It said the trucks represent a 720 billion naira ($469.89 million) investment and that it will be rolled out on August 15. Anthony Chiejina, Dangote Industries Limited's head of branding and communication, said the move will help the refinery cut logistics costs and improve supply directly to marketers. Africa's top oil export has turned to gas as an alternative fuel after it scrapped a popular but costly subsidy on petrol that has seen pump prices rise sharply. But adoption is slow.
