From The Hindu, August 19, 1975: Jatti suggests use of Nagari as common script
He said the use of Nagari script as the link between the South Indian languages of Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam, and between the southern and northern languages would prove of the utmost benefit both to the south and to the north.
Inaugurating the Nagari Lipi Parishad here, Mr. Jatti said the South Indian languages were close to each other but were almost rigidly confined to their respective regions, because of difference in script. For a similar reason northerners were unable to understand Malayalam or Kannada even though 70 per cent of the words in these languages were in Sanskrit.
Mr. Jatti said the Devnagari script was currently in use in the languages of Marathi and Hindi and with slight variations this script was being used in many other languages prevalent in the north. It was also used in the ancient languages of Sanskrit, Ardharmagadhi and Pali.
'It need hardly be said that the Nagari script is not needed to learn one's own language but to learn a language other than one's own. This is necessary if we are to be united and conscious of our common literary and philosophic heritage,' he observed.
It had been widely recognised that Devnagari had advantages as a script which roman and other scripts did not possess. In it there was no ambiguity in utterance as there was no divergence between spelling and pronunciation.

CP Radhakrishnan Vs Sudarshan Reddy For Vice-President: Does Opposition Pick Stand A Chance?
Last Updated: In the Vice-Presidential election, BJP-led NDA's CP Radhakrishnan faces INDIA bloc's Sudarshan Reddy. NDA's 422 MPs give Radhakrishnan a likely win over the opposition's 300 MPs. The stage is set for the Vice-Presidential election in which the ruling BJP-led NDA's CP Radhakrishnan will face the INDIA bloc's Sudarshan Reddy. The government's efforts to take the opposition on board for a unanimous VP election have failed, with the INDIA bloc fielding Reddy, described as one of 'India's most distinguished and progressive jurists." Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced Reddy as the opposition Vice President candidate and informed that he will file his nomination on August 21 for the September 9 election. Here's How Numbers Stack Up for the VP Polls Members of Parliament from both Houses — Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha — comprise the electoral college for the Vice-Presidential elections. Unlike the Presidential election, MLAs have no role in the Vice-President polls. At present, the strength of Parliament stands at 787, including both Houses. A candidate requires at least 394 votes to be elected as the next Vice President of India. The current situation favours Radhakrishnan, as the BJP-led NDA has 422 MPs, including nominated members who are likely to support the NDA nominee. The NDA's tally includes 293 MPs in the 542-member Lok Sabha and 129 MPs in the Rajya Sabha, where the effective strength of the House is currently 245. For the opposition, the polls remain a symbolic contest, as in the Vice-President elections of 2017 and 2022, since they lack the numbers. TMC MP Derek O'Brien said all opposition parties, including the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), are on board for Reddy's candidature. The INDIA bloc's current strength stands at around 300. The bloc includes the Congress, Samajwadi Party, DMK, Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), AAP and Indian Union Muslim League (IUML). The INDIA bloc is also planning to reach out to Jagan Mohan Reddy's YSR Congress Party, which has 7 Rajya Sabha MPs and 5 Lok Sabha members. Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which has 7 Rajya Sabha MPs and has supported the BJP in Parliament in the past, is yet to choose who it will support. However, even if the opposition manages to convince both Jagan Reddy and Naveen Patnaik, the gap remains too wide to bridge. So, Radhakrishnan's election as the next Vice President of India looks almost certain, unless an unexpected scenario emerges in which some BJP allies shift towards the INDIA bloc — a highly unlikely possibility. Two Southern Faces In VP Polls Two faces from South Indian are facing each other, putting regional parties in a tough spot. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has welcomed two-time Coimbatore MP Radhakrishnan's candidature as the NDA's Vice Presidential candidate. However, he is yet to react to Sudarshan Reddy, who hails from Andhra Pradesh. On the other hand, DMK called the election an ideological fight, saying even if the BJP picked a candidate from Tamil Nadu, it doesn't mean the ruling party at the centre cares about Tamil Nadu. 'This is an ideological fight. So the Opposition parties came together to select one candidate against the candidate who comes from an RSS background. The candidate (Sudarshan Reddy) the Opposition has selected is the one who respects the Constitution…Just because you (BJP) have a candidate from Tamil Nadu, doesn't mean you care about Tamil Nadu, Tamil language or values of the state," said DMK MP Kanimozhi. view comments Location : New Delhi, India, India First Published: August 19, 2025, 14:03 IST News politics CP Radhakrishnan Vs Sudarshan Reddy For Vice-President: Does Opposition Pick Stand A Chance? Rape case against rapper Vedan: Hearing anticipatory bail plea, Kerala HC told he's ‘habitual offender'
The Kerala High Court on Monday allowed a woman who accused rapper Hiran Das Murali, known by his stage name Vedan, of sexual assault to be impleaded as a party in his anticipatory bail plea. Vedan has allegedly been on the run for more than two weeks after the Kochi city police registered a rape case against him based on a complaint from a young doctor. When the High Court took up the anticipatory bail plea of the accused, the de facto complainant sought that the rapper be declared a habitual offender. Her counsel pointed out that Vedan is facing two other rape complaints, apart from two drug cases (under the NDPS Act). In 2021, too, he faced a sexual misconduct allegation and made a public apology. He is also facing a case under the Wildlife Protection Act for allegedly wearing a pendant made of a suspected leopard tooth. The court will hear the matter on Tuesday. Last week, the Kochi city police issued a lookout notice against Vedan, 31, a native of Thrissur. A Dalit voice in the Kerala rap scene, Vedan hit the news in April this year after police arrested him in drug cases. His arrest on charges of possessing the suspected leopard tooth triggered outrage on social media as people blamed forest officials for their 'overenthusiasm'. However, things turned in favour of Vedan after he apologised to his younger fans for being a bad influence with respect to drug use, and the state government started promoting him. Following the leopard tooth case, Vedan faced a sympathy wave, attracting huge crowds for his shows. The ruling CPI(M) backed Vedan, saying that the criticisms against him were attempts to suppress dissent by those who oppose the BJP's ideology. The Kerala government invited Vedan to perform at events marking its 10th anniversary in power. While facing the rape case, Vedan had a lineup of shows, which were later cancelled. In June, the University of Calicut decided to include Vedan's song in the degree-level syllabus of Malayalam language and literature. The university plan was for a comparative study between Vedan's song, 'Bhumi Njan Vazhunnidam', and Michael Jackson's 'They Don't Care About Us'. In protest against the decision, the BJP petitioned the Governor seeking the withdrawal of Vedan's song.

From The Hindu, August 19, 1975: Jatti suggests use of Nagari as common script
New Delhi, Aug. 18: The Vice-President, Mr. B.D. Jatti, to-day pleaded for the use of Nagari script as an effective instrument to bring about unity, understanding and integration between different regions.
