KPDN KL issues 47 notices under Op Kesan 4.0 for SST compliance

The Sun18-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR: The Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry's (KPDN) Kuala Lumpur branch has issued 47 notices to traders following inspections of over 80 premises under Op Kesan 4.0. The operation monitors price adjustments after the Sales and Service Tax (SST) rate increased from six to eight per cent.
Kuala Lumpur KPDN director Mohd Sabri Seman said the notices were issued under Section 21 of the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. 'These notices cover 154 items for data collection and analysis,' he told reporters after inspecting a supermarket on Jalan Klang Lama.
The ministry also received 27 consumer complaints regarding price hikes, particularly on ready-to-eat food. 'For complaints involving price and supply issues, investigations will be initiated within 24 hours,' Mohd Sabri added.
Despite the SST adjustment, monitoring indicates that overall prices remain stable. To ensure compliance, KPDN KL employs three strategies: daily price data collection, price monitoring officer (PPH) reports, and market intelligence by the Enforcement Division.
'Strict action will be taken against any party found raising prices unreasonably,' Mohd Sabri warned. Individuals violating anti-profiteering laws face fines up to RM100,000 or three years' jail, while companies may be fined RM500,000.
Op Kesan 4.0 aims to prevent unjustified price increases, especially for daily necessities, under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011. - Bernama

New parking facility to ease congestion at Rh Joseph Jarrau

Lau (fourth left) witnesses the handover of the parking facility project at Rumah Joseph Jarrau between SRDC and the contractor. SIBU (Aug 21): A long-standing parking issue at Rumah Joseph Jarrau in Tanjung Bekakap is set to be resolved with the construction of a new 100-metre-long parking facility, scheduled to begin next week. The RM93,000 project, funded under the Rural Transformation Programme (RTP) special allocation for the Bawang Assan state constituency, is expected to be completed within three months. According to Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan branch chairman Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, the project was initiated following a complaint lodged by Tuai Rumah Joseph to Councillor Johnny Ganning several months ago. The matter was subsequently brought to the attention of the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC). 'I have visited the site several times, and I'm pleased the project is now officially set to begin,' Lau said during the handover ceremony to the appointed contractor, Ismawi Enterprise, on Tuesday. Lau, who is SRDC Standing Committee chairman, said the parking facility will benefit not only the longhouse residents but also churchgoers in the area, particularly on weekends and during festive seasons. Expressing his gratitude, Tuai Rumah Joseph thanked all parties involved for approving the much-needed project. 'This facility will ease the parking situation for both residents and visitors, particularly during major events,' he said. In a related development, Lau also witnessed the handover of another infrastructure project, the upgrading of Jalan Yong Kok in the Engkilo area. The 95-metre road improvement project, also funded under the RTP for the Bawang Assan constituency, will be carried out in two phases. Both projects aim to enhance basic infrastructure and improve the quality of life for rural residents, in line with the state government's RTP objectives. More items exempted under SST than GST

MORE goods are exempted or zero-rated under the Sales and Service Tax (SST) compared to the Goods and Services Tax (GST), the Dewan Rakyat was told. According to the Finance Ministry, a total of 1,826 items are exempted under the SST, compared to 607 goods under the GST before it was abolished in 2018. The ministry said the main exempted items cover basic necessities such as food ingredients, medicine and reading material. 'The SST also excludes livestock and pet food, basic construction materials, fertilisers, pesticides, as well as agricultural and livestock machinery,' it said in a written reply. The ministry added that the SST is levied on 70% of services in the economy, compared to 76% under the GST, based on the Malaysia Standard Industrial Classification Codes. 'The government remains committed and careful in widening the scope of SST. This will be done in a targeted and progressive manner, taking into account its impact on the cost of living,' it added. It said the broader exemptions and lower scope of services under the SST reflect the government's sincerity in safeguarding public well-being while ensuring stronger fiscal sustainability in line with the Madani economic framework. The ministry was responding to Yuneswaran Ramaraj (PH-Segamat), who asked about the number of items exempted under the SST compared to the GST.

M'sian calls out RM1k rent listing for bare single-storey house

RENTING a home is becoming increasingly difficult for many Malaysians, particularly in high-demand states like Johor. A recent Threads post by a concerned woman has sparked heated discussions online after she highlighted a steep rental rate for a basic housing unit in the state. 'Living in Johor is getting harder with rental rates that do not make any sense,' she wrote in her post. A screenshot of a Facebook post attached to her post showed a bare, unfurnished single-storey unit allegedly being rented out for a staggering RM1,000. She claimed that the unit was located in the city centre, hence the exorbitant rental rate. In the comments section of the screenshot, one user suggested that the landlord could be targeting Malaysians working in Singapore — perhaps those not earning high salaries — but pointed out that even for that demographic, the rent was not considered affordable. The situation has ignited broader concerns over affordability, especially for locals earning in Malaysian Ringgit, as rental prices appear to be inflated by demand from Singaporean workers and landlords aiming at tenants with stronger currencies. 'I don't think people who work in Singapore would choose such run-down houses, right? If they're already paying a high price, they might as well get a bigger, nicer house. Even if it's a bit further from Johor Bahru, it's fine — many of them are used to commuting anyway,' one commenter pointed out. Another user noted that the cost of living in the state is even higher than in Kuala Lumpur, with the most expensive water tariffs in Malaysia — largely due to Singaporeans and Malaysians earning in Singapore dollars (SGD), who are willing to pay as long as it is still cheaper than prices on the island. 'There are landlords dreaming of renting out flats — yes, flats with no lift and not even on the ground floor — asking for RM1,000 or even RM1,100 in rent. I don't know... it just feels like a scam, because other similar units aren't even close to RM1,000,' one user shared. 'I saw on Facebook — the house looks like it's about to collapse, yet they're asking RM1,300 for it. A flat on the fourth floor. Then I read the location — it's in Stulang,' another user claimed.
