INKING DIFFERENTLY Britain's most tattooed man who's spent £40k transforming his entire body reveals how he looked before getting inked
BRITAIN'S most tattooed man has revealed what he looked like before covering every inch of his body in ink and fans can't believe it's the same person.
Mathew Whelan, 45, from Birmingham, who legally changed his name to King of Ink Land King Body Art The Extreme Ink-ite, has spent a whopping £40,000 and more than 1,600 hours under the needle.

Now covered head to toe in black and grey body art, from his shaved scalp to the soles of his feet, and even his eyeballs, resurfaced photos show just how much he's changed.
Snaps from when he was just 16 and 18 show the now-inked-up icon with a fresh face, buzz cut, and smooth skin.
In one shot, a young Mathew poses proudly with his very first tattoo which was a bulldog on his arm.
Fast forward nearly three decades and he's had his eyes permanently dyed black, nipples removed, ears reshaped, and almost no visible skin untouched by ink.
The transformation began when he was just nine years old after developing a fascination with tattoos and body mods and over the years, he's pushed it to the extreme.
He even holds a world record for the most tattoo artists working on him at once, after 36 tattooists inked him simultaneously at a Derby expo in 2016.
But going full body art hasn't come without complications.
His tattoos have caused him physical damage.
He told The Sun Online that the knuckle duster implant has done nerve damage but he hopes his arm can be saved - although this is undetermined until surgeons operate.
This week, King of Ink Land revealed he's been locked out of adult websites because facial recognition software can't recognise his face, mistaking it for a mask due to the heavy ink.
I never have to buy clothes as I've got them tattooed on & love it but trolls totally disagree
He believes it's another example of being unfairly treated based on how he looks and said his face is as much a part of his identity as his name.
He told the Metro: 'It's as important as the name really and I changed my name legally.
'Without a name you haven't got an identity, and it's the same with a face. It's my skin, my permanent identity.'
King of Ink got his first tatt when he was 16 and has since splashed £40,000 on body modifications.
He told how he had his nipples cut off to make room for more inkings and keeps them in his freezer 'next to his sprouts'.
He's also admitted that day-to-day life can be tough.
In 2015 he admitted his unusual looks were making it hard for him to find a job.
He has since called for an end to discrimination towards people with body modifications, claiming he has been the victim of a 'hate crime' due to his extraordinary appearance.
People avoid sitting next to him on buses, he gets stared at constantly, and strangers often try to sneak photos, which can sometimes lead to confrontation.
Mathew previously shared how his boss hid him because he hated his tattoos.
But despite the challenges, he says it's a lifestyle he chose and loves, even if it has to take a back seat for now.
The tattoo lover has recently announced he's pausing his inking habit to focus on paying off his £66,000 mortgage, saying he's putting his tattoo journey 'on hold' while he clears his debts.
He still plans to get the odd tattoo every couple of years, but says it's time to be sensible, even if it means scaling back the extreme ink.
He also revealed plans to remove some of his past body mods, including a hand implant, saying that although his transformation is a huge part of his identity, he's always evolving.

Period drama branded ‘fantastic' streaming on Netflix

The 2023 period drama All The Light We Cannot See is currently streaming on Netflix UK. The limited series tells the story of a blind French teenager Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) and a German soldier (Louis Hofmann) who attempt to weather the devastation of World War II together. It also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie in supporting roles, as Daniel and Etienne LeBlanc; Marie-Laure's father and uncle, respectively. Based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel by Anthony Doerr, it was picked up for adaptation by Netflix in 2019, with Free Guy filmmaker Shawn Levy attached to direct and Peaky Blinders writer Steven Knight on screenplay duties. All four episodes were first added to the streaming service in November 2023, where they remain to this day. Since its release, viewers have responded to its emotional story and powerful performances from its leading pair. All The Light We Cannot See currently boasts an 81% positive audience score on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes, with Asha B describing it as 'a show with substance and depth.' Meanwhile, user C W called it 'simply fantastic,' and 'a beautiful piece of storytelling.' 'Excellent series. Ruff also is fantastic and the cinematography is wonderful,' said Bad B. Helen W described it as: 'A beautiful story albeit told without compromise,' adding 'you should watch!' Critics were more divided on the adaptation, contributing to a 28% 'rotten' score, although most praised its production values and cinematography. 'All the Light We Cannot See starts off strong and will keep viewers engaged from the beginning until the very end,' wrote Ready Steady Cut. It's worth watching for Loberti's outstanding performance and the generally impressive production value,' said Paste Magazine, while bemoaning that it 'could have been so much more.' Meanwhile, NPR called it 'worthwhile and heartening.' The show marks the acting debut of Aria Mia Loberti, who is herself, legally blind. 'When you decide, as I did, to open up the casting process to low vision and legally blind contenders for this protagonist, who is herself blind, it's not like you can go the usual route,' director Levy told Town & Country Magazine. 'It's not like the talent agencies have filled their rosters with actors who are blind; it's not a big pool. That's why I opened it up with a global casting search announced in a blitz, and we got hundreds and hundreds of self-tapes from people who just filmed an audition on their laptop or their phone. 'Among those, I noticed one from a young woman named Aria Mia Loberti, and while at that point I didn't know anything about her, I knew that there was something about her that popped,' the Deadpool & Wolverine director added. 'What was difficult was being a first-time actress,' said Loberti of her debut performance. More Trending 'I had never been on a set before and that was the challenge. I brought a lot from my day-to-day life—my ballet training and martial arts training—with me to the stunts. 'I got to do all the stunts except for driving the car. Having Shawn as my guide was amazing and I am grateful to him for believing in me.' View More » All The Light We Cannot See is currently streaming on Netflix UK. Got a story? Bimini Bon-Boulash signed up to 'hardest show on TV' without seeing an episode

Bimini Bon-Boulash had never seen SAS: Who Dares Wins before signing up. They just knew it was dubbed 'the hardest show on television' — and that alone was enough to lure them in. Despite the show's infamous reputation, Bimini is impressively unfazed when shot at, punched in the face, or dropped from a great height into ice-cold waters. The drag artist — real name Tommy Hibbits — admited to Metro that even they've asked themselves while watching it back: 'Am I okay? Nothing seems to be bothering me that much, as if I need the extremities to focus and be calm.' However underneath the undaunted surface the star admits they approached the process with caution. Not because of the endurance it demanded, but because they were being thrown into an intense environment with hyper-masculine straight men like former Premier League footballer Troy Deeney, professional boxer Conor Benn, and Love Island heartbreaker Adam Collard. 'I knew people weren't gonna be homophobic, but I thought, 'Is it gonna be like high school again — hanging around with the straight lads, and everyone just taking the p**s out of each other all the time?'' To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video But quickly, that didn't matter. They had to come together as a team, become friends — they were all each other had. Still, Bimini is clearly disappointed that there's a lot we don't see on-screen — presumably because Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins prefers to show its stars at their lowest. 'I had a conversation with Conor, Adam, Troy, myself and Lucy [Spraggan], and the men said they don't know how to express emotion without anger. They realised it's actually sadness — but they don't know how to be sad without being angry. That's all they've ever been taught: to 'man up.' We deconstructed it in a progressive way that would be really beautiful to see.' Instead, those moments of vulnerability are cut in favour of pure misery. In a recent episode, Bimini was gloved up and put in the ring with Traitors winner Harry Clarke — instructed to pull no punches. 'That was so out of my comfort zone,' they say. 'I don't like physical violence. I don't like the idea of war. So that challenge was what I was most worried about — which is interesting, because that was the one a lot of the other guys were most excited about.' But that wasn't even Bimini's lowest point. While they can't say too much before the episode airs, they warn: 'There's a moment coming soon where it definitely started to get to me.' While many stars who boldly sign up for this relentless mental and physical battering either drop out or get thrown out by furious DS leaders Mark 'Billy' Billingham, Jason Fox, Rudy Reyes, and Chris Oliver, Bimini proves that the LGBTQ+ community possesses a unique strength and determination that refuses to be broken. 'A lot of people are coming up to me and saying, 'You've been doing it with such poise,' they said. 'I guess it goes back to the resilience of being queer.' 'If you can accept yourself in a world that doesn't accept you, then you can jump off a cliff, you know? I just never had a voice in my head telling me I was going to give up.' Regardless of how often the LGBTQ+ community's grit is tested, it remains constantly underestimated — especially when it comes to physical strength. Bimini's been dancing their whole life, performing cartwheels down the aisles of Tesco, totally unapologetic even when bullied at school. 'I was told I didn't have the genitals I have because I can do the splits,' they tell me, with an eye roll. But anyone who's been to a Bimini show can attest to their athleticism, gasping as they backflip in 10-inch heels and bend their legs behind their head without barely breaking a sweat. One DS even told them they were 'wasted in drag,' as though they don't already channel the full force of their body on stage. 'I don't know why drag queens are underestimated, considering what we put our bodies through. I told one of the DS staff to wear a pair of 10-inch Pleasers for 12 and a half hours and then see who thinks they're hard. 'We take to anything like a duck to water. We throw ourselves into it. So I really enjoyed the fact there were so many physical tests — this was once-in-a-lifetime stuff.' The physical challenges were a breeze. The real challenge was the constant anticipation of being shouted at or summoned by the DS. 'I only had two showers,' they say, mortified. 'It was gross. But you're on edge the whole time — you don't know if they're going to shout at you, so no one dared take a shower.' Thankfully, they emerged from the process unscathed — unlike some of their co-stars. X Factor star Lucy Spraggan tore her vulva so badly she required reconstructive surgery after filming. More Trending 'That was crazy — she's got a designer vagina now,' they tease. Instead, Bimini left with a deeper sense of self and more conviction in the strengths they always knew were there. 'It cemented me to my core,' they say. 'I'm Lara Croft, and no one is going to tell me otherwise.'
