David Hyde Pierce insists he's 'not against' returning for Frasier reboot

Metro01-05-2025

David Hyde Pierce has shed further light on his decision not to appear in the recent Frasier reboot, teasing that he wouldn't be 'against' returning if the show returns.
The 66-year-old appeared in all 11 seasons of the original series, playing Frasier Crane's equally stuffy brother Niles, alongside Kelsey Grammer, Jane Leeves, John Mahoney and Peri Gilpin.
While Kelsey reprised his role for the 2023 revival – which was axed by Paramount+ after two seasons – his former co-star turned the opportunity down, meaning plans had to be overhauled for the episodes.
In a new interview to promote his latest Broadway stint in Pirates! The Penzance Musical, he was questioned about taking a backseat.
'I did not think it would hinge on my participation. I thought it should move on from what we were doing,' he told Variety.
'When Frasier happened, he didn't bring the gang from Cheers. It was successful because they made it something different.
'Creatively, I thought, I have nothing else. I don't think I'm going to be much fun or be that enthusiastic about returning.'
Although Paramount+ canceled the Frasier revival earlier this year, Kelsey shared that he was still hoping to find a new home for the program in the future.
When asked if he would be tempted to return as Niles if the show was to come back, David vowed: 'If there was a reason for me to appear, I'm not against it at all.'
The original series, a spin-off of Cheers, ran for 11 years between 1993 and 2004, and claimed 37 Emmys in that time.
It followed Frasier as he swapped Boston for his hometown of Seattle, reconnecting with his brother, Niles and their dad, Martin (John), at the same time.
In the 2023 revival, the radio host returned to Boston once more so that he could work on his relationship with his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).
Unpacking the short-lived reboot, Kelsey suggested that it could still be a success on another channel, with other familiar faces popping up.
'There's a better home for it,' he told the New York Post. 'We'll end up somewhere where people are passionate about it. More Trending
'Ted [Danson] and I might visit actually something together.
'We've been talking about a couple ideas. Maybe on Frasier. We don't know.'

'As long as it's still a relevant relationship, it will still be relevant for the show,' he added. '[Sam] and Frasier got along pretty well, discovered some things together about life. They could still do that.'

Androids rom-com Maybe Happy Ending wins six major Tony Awards

Maybe Happy Ending, a romantic-comedy about a pair of androids falling in love, has won six Tony Awards, including best new musical. The story charts the relationship between two decommissioned robots, becoming a commentary on human themes and the passage of time. Starring Darren Criss and Helen J Shen, Maybe Happy Ending enjoyed huge success at the 78th annual ceremony held at the Radio City Music Hall in New York on Sunday. The acclaimed Broadway production's awards also included Criss winning best leading actor in a musical, alongside prizes for best direction of a musical, best original theatre score, best book of a musical, and best scenic design of a musical. In other awards, Purpose, Branden Jacobs-Jenkins' drawing room drama about an accomplished black family exposing hypocrisy and pressures during a snowed-in gathering, won best new play. Jacobs-Jenkins becomes the first black playwright to win the award since August Wilson took home the accolade in 1987 for Fences. It underlines a triumphant year for Jacobs-Jenkins after scooping the Pulitzer Prize for Purpose - and winning back-to-back Tonys after his Appropriate won best play revival in 2024. Kara Young - the first black female actor to be nominated for a Tony in four consecutive years - became the first black person to win two awards consecutively, picking up the trophy for featured actress in a play for her work in Purpose. Sunset Blvd won best musical revival, handing composer Andrew Lloyd Webber his first competitive Tony since 1995, when the original show won. The current version is a stripped-down, minimalist production. Sarah Snook took home the trophy for leading actress in a play for her tireless work in The Picture Of Dorian Gray, where she plays all 26 roles. "I don't feel alone any night that I do this show," Snook said, dismissing the idea of her play as a one-woman show. "There are so many people onstage making it work and behind the stage making it work." Oh Mary! saw Sam Pinkleton win best director and Cole Escola landing best actor in a play. Francis Jue won best actor in a featured role in a play for his work in a revival of Yellow Face. Jak Malone won best actor in a featured role in a musical for the British import, Operation Mincemeat: A New Musical. Eureka Day, Jonathan Spector's social satire about well-meaning liberals debating a school's vaccine policy, won the best play revival trophy. Stranger Things: The First Shadow - based on the 12-time Emmy-winning Netflix hit sci-fi series, won best scenic design, lighting design and sound design of a play. The production, which has been running in London's West End, also picked up a special award for its illusions and technical effects.

George Clooney debuts huge makeover after revealing wife Amal's complaint

George Clooney is back to being a silver fox, and we have Amal Clooney to thank due to her reaction to his dyed brown hair. The Ocean's Eleven actor, 64, is well known for his grey hair, which he has had since his twenties, but he reached for the dye bottle during his recent stage role in Broadway's Good Night, and Good Luck. Hitting the red carpet at the Tony Awards, Clooney had ditched the brown locks and was back to his usual self, posing alongside Amal, 47, in a suave black tuxedo. Amal looked glamorous as ever in an off-shoulder white beaded dress, with her own brunette tresses curled and pulled to the side. Speaking to People on the red carpet, Clooney revealed how happy Amal was that he had cut his hair – and therefore the brown dye out – after finding his drastic look 'funny.' 'Oh man, my wife [Amal] was the happiest person when I came home after the play today and I'd cut all the hair off,' he revealed. 'Because, you know, I looked like a drug dealer with that bad black dye job.' Last week, during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, he covered his hair with a cap while revealing how his wife, whom he wed in 2014, felt about it. 'She thinks it's funny. She'll be glad when it's gone,' he told host Meyers. In an interview with CBS Mornings in April, he confided that he himself had found it a struggle to adapt to. 'I'm not used to it. You never get used to it,' he said. Listen, I started getting gray when I was 25, so I've been gray most of my life. So it's not my favorite look, and my wife, she thinks it's funny.' Amal isn't the only one who has been left giggling over George's transformation, as he told Gayle King about twins Alexander and Ella's reaction. 'They laugh at it because, honestly, nothing makes you look older than being 63 and dying your hair,' he said. More Trending It comes weeks after George made a shock marriage confession, insisting he and Amal have never had an argument. 'Amal and I are having a really great time in life,' he told the host. 'Our kids are seven, about to be eight, which is a pretty great age. They're really curious and funny,' he told Gayle during an interview. 'Every parent thinks their kids are great – our kids are funny, and make us laugh. 'We were here with you once before, and I remember we said we'd never had an argument. We still haven't. We're trying to find something to fight about!' Got a story?
