How To Live With Ovarian Cysts? Hailey Bieber's New Post And What Doctors Say

NDTV23-04-2025

American Model and Businesswoman Hailey Bieber has opened up about her reproductive health, yet again!
In the Instagram story, she shared, "Currently have two ovarian cysts. If you deal with ovarian cysts I'm right there with ya!"
The UK National Health Services (NHS) defines ovarian cysts as a common condition of fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries and don't cause any symptoms.
In 2022, she revealed that she was dealing with ovarian cysts. She shared a photo of herself in a story revealing that she has a cyst on her ovary "the size of an apple." She also clarified that it was not endometriosis or Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) but she has had an ovarian cyst a "few times and it's never fun."
So, ovarian cysts are of many types, and here's everything you need to know about this reproductive condition.
What Are Ovarian Cysts
For the unversed, there are two ovaries in the female reproductive system, located on both sides of the uterus. They are majorly responsible for helping the body release eggs and hormones, called estrogen and progesterone. These two hormones are responsible for most of the hormonal changes in your body.
Types Of Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts are common and can cause abnormal growths that develop on or inside your ovaries, according to NHS. These are usually filled with fluid and do not cause any symptoms, and are often painless.
There are two main types of ovarian cysts, including functional ovarian cysts and pathological ovarian cysts.
Functional ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop as a part of the menstrual cycle and do not last a long time.
Pathological ovarian cysts are a consequence of abnormal cell growth. It is less common than functional ovarian cysts.
Other types of ovarian cysts include:
Endometriomas: Some tissues that grow inside the uterus can sometimes develop outside of it and attach themselves to ovaries. Commonly known as chocolate cysts, these growths are often associated with severe cases of endometriosis.
Dermoid cysts: Sac-like growth that grows on the ovaries and may contain hair, fat and other tissue.
Cystadenomas: These grow on the outer part of the ovaries.
Knowing the type of ovarian cyst can help the doctor determine the kind of symptoms you may experience and explain the kind of pain you are experiencing, says Gynaecologist, Laparoscopic Surgeon & Infertility Specialist, Dr Vaishali Sharma.
Symptoms Of Ovarian Cysts
"Ovarian cysts can take a toll on a woman's daily routine," Obstetrician and Gynaecologist Dr Kaishreen Khan of Motherhood Hospitals tells NDTV.
"Ovarian cysts can affect a female's life depending on her age and the size of the cyst. Before puberty, ovarian cysts usually do not pose any problems and are rarely cancerous. After puberty and during the reproductive age, ovarian cysts can be either benign or dangerous," Obstetrician and Gynecologist Dr Juhee Jain of Madhukar Rainbow Children's Hospital shares with NDTV.
The health condition can present itself in many ways. "The cyst is known to cause lower abdominal pain, mainly during periods of physical activity. One may also suffer bloating, heaviness, or discomfort, making it hard to sit or move freely. In some cases, cysts can cause irregular periods or mood changes because of the hormonal imbalance. If a cyst bursts or twists, a woman can experience severe pain and may require immediate treatment," avers Dr Khan.
When Should You Visit A Doctor
While ovarian cysts are common, they can be dangerous if left untreated. As per Dr Khan, it is imperative for any woman to consult an expert if they experience abdominal pain, bloating and discomfort. A proper diagnosis through an ultrasound and blood tests can help confirm the condition.
Upon diagnosis, the size of the cyst will help your doctor determine the right course of treatment. Dr Jain explains, "If the size of the cyst is less than or equal to 5 cm, only regular follow-up is required. For cysts larger than 5 cm but less than or equal to 10 cm, regular check-ups are recommended. If the cyst is larger than 10 cm, urgent treatment is necessary."
"During the reproductive age, ovarian cysts are generally benign but may be cancerous.
However, in the post-menopausal age, ovarian cysts are usually cancerous. Therefore, close monitoring by a gynecologist is essential, including blood tests and possible surgery," she adds.
A cyst may even burst or twist, in which case women may experience severe pain and require immediate attention, warns Dr Khan. While many cysts go away on their own, regular check-ups prevent them from affecting everyday life.

Is it possible to manage ovarian cysts with lifestyle changes
From your physical to mental health, ovarian cysts may impact you in numerous ways. Experts say that you would need to be patient about the condition and seek support from your loved ones to be able to manage the condition. Apart from this, here are some expert-approved lifestyle changes that may help manage the symptoms and reduce the likelihood of the recurrence of ovarian cysts.
Adhere to a well-balanced diet. It is important to limit fat intake and saturated fat, meat and dairy products, as per the study published in the International Journal of Community Based Nursery and Midwifery.
Dr Khan recommends eating fresh fruits and vegetables, and whole grains. Choose anti-inflammatory foods such as turmeric, ginger, berries, and leafy greens to reduce inflammation.
Be mindful of your water intake. While not a primary treatment, it can help maintain your hormonal health. It can help detoxify your system and support overall hormonal health.
Exercise regularly and stay active to manage hormonal imbalance and inflammation. You can try yoga as well.
Avoid processed, sugary, and canned foods that can lead to hormonal imbalance and inflammation.
Rest as much as you can and quit alcohol and smoking to prevent the condition from getting worse.
Ovarian cysts affect your hormones, which can affect your mental health so don't ignore it. Seek help and confide in your loved ones. You can also get professional help to avoid complications.
Avoid self-medication and visit a doctor if you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above.

81,000 Vials, Rs 24 Crore In 3 Months: Weight Loss Drug Mounjaro Sales Triple As Patients Shift To Higher Dose

With three months since its launch in India, according to latest Pharmatrac data, Mounjaro clocked Rs 12.6 crore in sales in May 2025—a threefold increase from March In a sign of rising adoption, sales of Mounjaro—the breakthrough weight loss and type 2 diabetes drug—have nearly tripled in the last two months, data shows. American drugmaker Eli Lilly launched Mounjaro in India on March 20, triggering immediate frenzy, especially among those looking to achieve weight loss and glucose control. Doctors told News18 they were flooded with requests from patients eager to start Mounjaro or learn more about its benefits. With three months since its launch in India, according to latest Pharmatrac data, Mounjaro clocked Rs 12.6 crore in sales in May 2025—a threefold increase from March. The higher dosage form of five milligram, in particular, more than doubled in value and quantity sales between April and May, indicating a strong trend of patient progression to the next stage of treatment. As per the medical protocol, patients start with lower dosage of 2.5 milligram weekly dose and upgrade to 5 milligram after four weeks. 'This clinical shift is clearly reflected in market numbers. Five mg pack sales jumped from Rs 3.08 crore in April to Rs 7.53 crore in May, while unit sales rose from over 9,300 to over 22,900," Sheetal Sapale, vice-president (commercial), Pharmatrac, told News18. 'Looking at these trends and the acceptance of this therapy—by physicians as well as patients—along with the affordable pricing of Rs 18,000 to Rs 22,000 per month dosage indicates a definite pick up in consumption." The total market for Mounjaro has reached Rs 23.94 crore over the past three months, selling more than 81,000 vials of the drug—signalling growing adoption in diabetes care protocols. According to Dr Anoop Misra, chairman, Fortis C-DOC Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, clinical use of Mounjaro in India closely reflects the trends observed in the data. 'A substantial number of patients are being initiated at 2.5 mg, with a timely escalation to 5 mg in line with recommended protocols. This pattern suggests good tolerability and early clinical efficacy in glycemic control and weight reduction." Misra told News18: 'With growing familiarity and broader access, increased use of higher doses (7.5 mg and above) is likely, especially in patients requiring enhanced metabolic outcomes." The injectable drug is approved by India's apex drug regulatory body, Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection priced at Rs 4,375 for a 5 mg vial and Rs 3,500 for a 2.5 mg vial, making the monthly expenditure around Rs 14,000-Rs 17,500. The drug is claimed to be 80 per cent cheaper than in the United States. Entry-Level Dosage Sales Plateau Mounjaro, the brand name for Tirzepatide, a once-weekly injectable, is a first-in-class medication that combines the effects of two naturally occurring hormones: GIP (Gastric Inhibitory Polypeptide) and GLP-1 (Glucagon-Like Peptide-1). Data shows that the 2.5mg dose of Mounjaro—generally prescribed as the starting regimen for type 2 diabetes patients or those looking to shed weight—has shown signs of 'plateauing growth". This trend confirms a gradual shift to higher doses. The sales value for the 2.5 mg injection rose marginally from Rs 4.80 crore in April to Rs 5.08 crore in May, after a steeper increase from Rs 1.42 crore in March. The data shows that the unit sales also reflect this trend, increasing from 5,400 in March to 18,270 in April, but only marginally to 19,350 in May. While the 2.5 mg variant remains essential for entry-level patient initiation, its month-on-month growth may continue to taper off as the patient base matures and advances to the next phase of dosing.

Pilot Refuses To Fly, Leaves Eknath Shinde Stuck At Jalgaon Airport For 45 Minutes

Last Updated: The Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister's departure from Jalgaon was delayed after the pilot cited exhaustion and duty hour restrictions Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's return to Mumbai from Jalgaon was delayed twice on Friday — first, due to technical issues before arrival, and later after the pilot of his aircraft refused to take off, citing duty hour limitations and ill health. According to NDTV, Shinde was scheduled to arrive at Jalgaon at 3.45 pm but reached nearly two-and-a-half hours late due to technical reasons. After landing, he travelled to Muktainagar by road, where he participated in the Palkhi Yatra (religious procession) of Sant Muktai, accompanied by ministers Girish Mahajan, Gulabrao Patil, and several administration officials. After completing the visit and returning to Jalgaon airport at around 9.15 pm, a second delay occurred. The pilot of Shinde's personal aircraft refused to fly, stating that his duty hours had ended and that fresh clearance would be needed to operate the flight. The pilot also cited ill health as an additional reason for refusing to take off, according to NDTV. As per News18 Marathi, the pilot had already been flying for 12 consecutive hours and was not in a position to continue, both due to his condition and technical regulations. In an attempt to resolve the situation, Mahajan, Patil, and other officials held discussions with the pilot for about 45 minutes. Mahajan also contacted airline officials for the required permissions. According to Lokmat Times, a doctor was also called to examine the pilot's condition. After the medical assessment and necessary approvals, the pilot eventually agreed to operate the flight and the aircraft departed for Mumbai. Speaking to reporters, Girish Mahajan said, 'The pilot had a health-related concern and an issue with the timing. There were some technical difficulties too. We spoke to the airline company, and they explained the situation to the pilot in their own way. It was a minor issue." During the return flight, the Deputy Chief Minister's team assisted a woman who urgently needed to travel to Mumbai for a kidney surgery. According to NDTV, the woman, Sheetal Patil, and her husband had missed their scheduled flight. Upon learning about their situation, Mahajan arranged for the couple to board Shinde's aircraft. Ambulance services were kept ready at Mumbai airport to immediately transfer the woman for surgery. Gulabrao Patil said, 'Eknath Shinde has not forgotten his days of struggle even today. He has shown sensitivity towards the common man."
