Preparations for NISAR mission
NEW DELHI: The world's most expensive earth observation satellite, NISAR, which has been jointly developed by Nasa and Isro, will be launched after much delay from the Sriharikota spaceport at 5.40pm on July 30, the Indian space agency has said.
Both India and the US have been working on the Nasa-Isro SAR Mission (NISAR) for over a decade and it has cost them over $1.5 billion.
"Historic Launch Ahead... NISAR will scan the entire globe every 12 days, providing high-resolution, all-weather, day-and-night data. It can detect even subtle changes in Earth's surface like ground deformation, ice sheet shifts, and vegetation dynamics," Isro posted on X.
Speaking to TOI on Tuesday, space minister Jitendra Singh said, "NISAR will open a new horizon in Indo-US collaboration.
The satellite will take images of every piece of Earth. It will not only have scientific applications but also provide new earth science".
The minister, who wanted to witness the crucial launch but may not be able to go to Sriharikota due to Parliament being in session, said that "crucial data generated from NISAR will, besides being beneficial for the US and India, help other countries in disaster management. Thus, it will live up to PM Modi's dream of Bharat playing the role of Vishwa Bandhu."

India's GSLV-F16 rocket will inject the satellite into a 743-km sun-synchronous orbit with an inclination of 98.4 degrees. NISAR will observe Earth with a swath of 242 km and high spatial resolution, using SweepSAR technology for the first time. The satellite, weighing 2,392 kg, will be the first one to observe the Earth with a dual frequency synthetic aperture radar, with one each provided by Isro (S-band) and Nasa (L-band).
The NISAR mission is designed to observe and measure some of the planet's most complex natural processes, including ecosystem disturbances and natural hazards like quakes, tsunamis, volcanoes and landslides.

And while you might miss the exact moment, fear not, astronomers say the moon will appear full for nearly three days, offering plenty of opportunities to catch the show, reported Today. August full moon is also called Sturgeon Moon(Representative Image/ Pixabay) Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon? The name 'Sturgeon Moon' originated from the Native American tribes in the Great Lakes region, who found abundant sturgeon, large freshwater fish, during this time of the year. The Today report cited Old Farmer's Almanac recorded the name as a seasonal marker that has been passed down through generations. Other names for the August full moon include: corn moon, black cherries moon, and mountain shadows moon. Astronomer Catherine Pilachowski explained that the exact moment of full illumination will last only an instant, but the moon will appear full for nearly three days. The August Moon 2025 also aligns with lunar aphelion on August 7, when the moon is at its farthest point from the sun: a rare occurrence during a full moon. Adding to the spectacle, a planetary alignment of Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn may also be visible around moonset on August 9 and again on August 11. Pilachowski told Today that with the moon approaching fullness, the silver not illuminated gets smaller until the entire face of the moon public sees is in sunlight. Perseid Meteor Shower: Bonus night sky show Moon will not be the only thing to watch for the skygazers on August 12 and August 13. You might see the bright Perseid meteors zoom in the northern sky. The moon's glow may mess up the view a bit. Tips to watch it: go far from city lights, let your eyes get used to the dark, & look away from the moon, stated another Louisville Courier Journal report. According to the National Weather Service said Louisville will have some clouds on August 9, which should allow for partial moon visibility, though local conditions may vary, the Louisville Courier Journal report added. FAQs When is the August full moon? The full moon is on August 9 at 3:55 am EDT. How long will the moon appear full? For approximately three days, from the evening of August 8 to August 10. Why is it called the Sturgeon Moon? Named after the Great Lakes tribes who caught sturgeon in abundance during August. What are all the full moons of 2025? The rest of the full moons in 2025 are: September is the Corn Moon, October is the Hunter's Moon, November is the Beaver Moon, and December is the Cold Moon. Why is my anxiety worse during a full Moon? Some people report increased anxiety during a full Moon, possibly due to changes in sleep patterns or heightened emotional sensitivity.

After conflict over tariff, US and China now fighting over treasure on moon, NASA will play...

After conflict over tariff, US and China now fighting over treasure on moon, NASA will play... The United States is planning to send a nuclear reactor into space by 2030. The interim administrator of NASA, Sean Duffy, in a directive last week, mentioned that he is looking forward to sending a nuclear reactor to the South Pole Area of the Moon. There are many countries in line, and he clearly mentioned that the US wants to move ahead of China in this race. Mr Duffy proposed that several private companies are being contacted to give their proposals for the development of a powerful reactor. Where does the US want to send a nuclear reactor? The US wants to send a nuclear reactor to a special area of the moon, the South Pole area, where no country other than India has ever reached. What are the possible challenges in installing a nuclear reactor on the moon? The lunar surface of the Moon experiences two weeks of continuous sunlight accompanied by two weeks of continuous darkness. It implies that one lunar day is equal to four weeks on Earth. This can be a challenge to produce energy. Which countries are in line? Globally, many nations aim to reach on moon. Some are the US, China, Russia, India, and Japan. There are countries that aim to establish permanent human settlements too. The Antemis-III Mission NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) desires to send a nuclear reactor to the moon by the middle of 2027 under their Antemis-3 Mission. Under this mission, NASA aims to send the first woman and first human of color to the South Pole of the Moon.

China tests spacecraft it hopes will put first Chinese on the moon

Synopsis China has conducted its first test of the Lanyue lunar lander, aiming to put Chinese astronauts on the moon before 2030. The lander's ascent and descent systems were comprehensively verified at a simulated lunar surface site in Hebei province. This test marks a critical milestone in China's manned lunar exploration program, amidst growing competition with the United States' Artemis program. TIL Creatives Representational AI Image. China conducted its first test on Wednesday of a lunar lander that it hopes will put the first Chinese on the moon before 2030, the country's manned space program said. The lander's ascent and descent systems underwent comprehensive verification at a site in Hebei province that was designed to simulate the moon's surface. The test surface had special coating to mimic lunar soil reflectivity, as well as being covered with rocks and craters. "The test involved multiple operational conditions, a lengthy testing period, and high technical complexity, making it a critical milestone in the development of China's manned lunar exploration program," China Manned Space (CMS) said in a statement posted on its website on Thursday. The lunar lander, known as Lanyue, which means "embrace the moon" in Mandarin, will be used to transport astronauts between the lunar orbit and the moon's surface, as well as serving as a living space, power source, and data center after they land on the moon, CMS added. China has kept details closely guarded about its programme to achieve a manned landing on the moon, but the disclosure about the test comes at a time when the United States is looking to stave off the rapid advances of China's space program. NASA plans for its Artemis programme to send astronauts around the moon and back in April 2026, with a subsequent moon landing mission a year later. China's uncrewed missions to the moon in the past five years have allowed the country to become the only nation to retrieve lunar samples from both the near and far side of the moon. Those missions have drawn interest from the European Space Agency, NASA-funded universities, and national space agencies from Pakistan to Thailand. A successful manned landing before 2030 would boost China's plans to build a "basic model" of the International Lunar Research Station by 2035. This manned base, led by China and Russia, would include a nuclear reactor on the moon's surface as a power source.
