Swiggy, Zomato lead public market fundraising; Zepto tops private capital charts
The data points to a decisive shift in the startup funding lifecycle with IPOs, FPOs and QIPs emerging as the dominant channels for late-stage growth capital. This marks the first time that public market funding has so clearly outpaced private capital for startups at scale.
The report also noted that over Rs 20,000 crore worth of secondary exits were realised by PE/VC firms through block and bulk trades, including investors such as Peak XV and TPG.
Mutual fund ownership in RainGauge Index companies rose from 10% in March 2024 to 14% in March 2025, underscoring growing institutional participation and liquidity depth in the listed startup ecosystem.
The RainGauge Index, which tracks the performance of 39 listed startups, ended FY25 with a 6.3% annual gain, beating the Nifty 50, BSE Midcap and even matching the two-year trajectory of the Nasdaq 100. This came despite a cyclical economic slowdown, real GDP growth falling to 6.5% and FII outflows touching Rs 78,000 crore in Q1 FY25, the highest since the COVID-era selloff.

The report characterises FY25 as a year of maturing for India's public startup cohort, after a full cycle of euphoric IPOs (2021–22), sharp corrections (2023) and a reset in valuations (2024).
Founders now face tighter public-market discipline. Sector-specific guardrails are in place, with forward valuation multiples settling at 58x EV/EBITDA for internet platforms, 29x for B2B SaaS, 22x for consumer brands and 3x P/B for BFSI players.
More than half of RainGauge Index constituents ended the year in the red, with the divergence in performance now clearly attributable to fundamentals. Policybazaar and CarTrade were top performers, delivering profitable growth and stock gains of 93% and 133% respectively.
In contrast, several consumer-facing firms and quick commerce players remained in high-burn territory, with mounting scrutiny over margins and growth quality.
Among key developments,
Zomato
became the first venture-backed startup to be inducted into the Nifty 50 and Sensex, while Swiggy joined the Nifty Next 50. Nykaa, PB Fintech, Ola Electric, and others were added to the Nifty MidCap150. A dozen other startups including Meesho, Groww, Urban Company, Wakefit and Pine Labs filed for IPOs in FY25, suggesting that the public markets will remain a core part of India's venture-backed funding stack going forward.
At the company level, Zomato reported a 59% rise in adjusted revenue and posted Rs 527 crore in FY25 PAT, but faced compression in quick commerce margins. Swiggy widened losses to Rs 3,117 crore despite 117% revenue growth in the segment. Policybazaar posted Rs 353 crore in PAT and doubled its Ebitda, while CarTrade turned in Rs 145 crore in profit driven by the integration of OLX India's auto classifieds business. FirstCry, which listed in August 2024, saw a 43% rise in Ebitda even as offline demand dipped, which its CEO described as a short-term blip.
MakeMyTrip and EaseMyTrip both benefited from a surge in travel demand, with gross bookings hitting record highs and international revenue share rising to 25%.
TRMG said public markets are no longer just an exit channel for late-stage startups but a discipline that is reshaping how companies prepare for scale. The firm also launched a companion index, RainGauge Private Pulse, to track India's next $100 billion cohort of late-stage private companies that are gearing up for
IPO
s. 'We've now seen the full arc, the IPO frenzy, the valuation winter and now a clear re-rating driven by fundamentals,' said Kashyap Chanchani, managing partner at TRMG. 'This is the age of seasoning. The market is no longer listening to stories, it's pricing in substance.'

Amreli diamond auction generates Rs 3 crore in one day, draws over 300 buyers
The Amreli Diamond Association (ADA) in Gujarat organised its first-ever auction of cut and polished natural diamonds, achieving sales of over 4,700 carats of diamonds worth Rs 3 crore in a single day. The auction drew over 300 buyers from Gujarat and Mumbai, with traders and manufacturers selling diamonds on a cash basis. The ADA, according to the people familiar with the development, had been working on the auction for the last two months, contacting diamond traders and merchants of Gujarat and Mumbai, and inviting them to come to Amreli. The auction was held in the Bombay Market of Amreli town in Saurashtra, on Saturday. The association had invited diamond traders from Surat, Bhavnagar, Jasdan, Botad, Junagadh, Ahmedabad and Mumbai. In the day-long auction, which started at 10 am and finished at 8pm, the buyers were given ample time to check the diamonds, said sources. On Monday, the diamond traders and manufacturers of Amreli met ADA President Lalit Thummar and shared the details of the total business done on Saturday. During the meeting, a decision was taken to organise the auction every Saturday. ADA President Lalit Thummar said, 'Over 300 buyers from different parts of Gujarat and Mumbai took part in the auction on Saturday and purchased diamonds worth Rs 3 crore. A good response was recorded. Since diamonds are cheaper in Amreli, traders from other areas visit the district to purchase diamonds. Also, the trade is conducted in cash.' 'In other districts, the diamonds are sold, and payment is done within 90 to 120 days. Here, we have adopted strict rules for cash sales. A polished diamond from the manufacturer reaches the broker, followed by the trader, who sells the diamond to the jeweller or diamond traders of other districts. At every step, the middleman keeps one to two per cent as his commission. If a diamond is sold at Rs 20,000 per carat, the traders will get Rs 16,000 to Rs 15,000,' added Thummar. 'Earlier, the traders had to compromise on prices while doing business,' he said. He further added, 'We are in contact with the diamond merchants of different markets across the state. Next week we are going to organise the auction on Friday as there is a festival on Saturday. We are also planning to construct a building for holding the auctions. The building will also have the facility of accommodation and lockers for the visitors.' According to the ADA, there are over 940 small and medium-level diamond factories in Amreli district, where over 50,000 artisans work as diamond polishers.

Less than 15% of youth skilled under government scheme placed
. NEW DELHI: As unemployment continues to be a concern, government data shows that over 1.6 crore youth across India have been trained under the Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY) since 2015, though only about 24.3 lakh secured job placements - less than 15% of the total youth trained. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha, skill development minister Jayant Chaudhary said that while placement tracking was done under the first three phases of PMKVY (2015-2022), the current phase (PMKVY 4.0) focuses more on empowering candidates to pursue varied career paths and provides orientation support through platforms like Skill India Digital Hub. The platform connects trained individuals with potential employers and apprenticeship opportunities, with Rozgar Melas and National Apprenticeship Melas providing additional placement support. However, employment outcomes remain modest. Of the 56.89 lakh certified candidates in Short-Term Training (STT) between 2015 and 2022, only 24.3 lakh were reported placed - around 43%. Analysts say the low employment ratio reflects a continued gap between training curricula and industry requirements. The government acknowledged the need to align skilling with local demand and industry trends and has started district-level skill gap studies and state-specific training programmes. Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh lead in both training enrolment and loan assistance. Efforts to improve quality outcomes include training through accredited centres, on-the-job training, the National Credit Framework, and regular third-party evaluations. A third-party assessment of PMKVY 4.0 is currently underway to guide policy corrections. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . Is U.S. entry now a $15,000 gamble for travelers? Here's what the State Department plans
Visa bond rule: U.S. may soon require business and tourist visa applicants to pay up to $15,000- The U.S. State Department has unveiled a controversial visa bond proposal that could make travel to America much costlier for many international visitors. Here's everything you need to know about the new rule, who it impacts, and how it may affect travel and tourism in 2025. U.S. visa applicants could be required to pay a refundable bond of up to $15,000 In a new move that's sparking global attention, the U.S. State Department is preparing to launch a 12-month pilot program requiring business and tourist visa applicants to post a refundable bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000. This program, aimed at reducing visa overstays and tightening border controls, will apply specifically to travelers from countries with historically high rates of visa violations. It marks one of the most significant updates to U.S. visa rules in recent years, with strong implications for international tourism, immigration, and global diplomacy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Most Beautiful Women Ever Today's NYC Undo Who will be affected by the visa bond pilot program? This pilot program applies to temporary visitors entering the U.S. on B‑1 (business) and B‑2 (tourist) visas, especially from countries the U.S. deems high-risk for visa overstays—defined as nations with a visa overstay rate of 10% or higher. These may also include countries with limited identity verification systems or those offering citizenship-by-investment without requiring residency. Important: Travelers using the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) or ESTA will not be affected by the bond requirement. Live Events The official list of targeted countries is expected to be published by August 5, 2025, giving applicants a brief window to apply before the new rules take effect. How much will the visa bond cost? Under the rule, U.S. consular officers will have discretion to determine the bond amount on a case-by-case basis. Depending on the traveler's background, financial status, and purpose of visit, the bond will be set at one of three levels: $5,000 $10,000 (default amount for most cases) $15,000 Applicants will be notified in writing if they are subject to the bond, and they must submit payment via through a secure Treasury/ICE system. The bond will only be processed after the visa is approved. What happens to the bond after the visit? The bond is fully refundable—but only if the visa holder leaves the U.S. within the authorized time and complies with all visa terms. The refund is typically processed: Upon departure from the U.S. In case of the traveler's death If the traveler becomes a U.S. citizen Failure to depart on time or violation of visa terms will result in forfeiture of the full bond amount. There is no appeal process, and refunds may take time depending on inter-agency coordination. Can the visa bond be waived? Yes, but only under specific conditions. Waivers may be granted for: Humanitarian reasons Public health or national interest Diplomatic or government-related travel However, decisions on waivers are final and made solely at the discretion of the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Visa Services. There is no formal appeals process for bond waiver denials. Why is the U.S. proposing a visa bond now? The idea is not entirely new. A similar visa bond program was introduced in 2020 under the Trump administration, but it never took effect due to the COVID-19 pandemic and global travel shutdowns. The 2025 proposal is more detailed and structured, with the goal of reducing visa overstays and encouraging better cooperation from foreign governments. Officials are framing it as a 'diplomatic tool' rather than just a deterrent—one that incentivizes countries to strengthen their internal documentation systems and discourage their citizens from overstaying in the U.S. What travelers and immigration advocates are saying? Many immigration experts and travelers have expressed concern that the $10,000 average bond will create financial hardship, especially for travelers from developing nations or those visiting for medical, family, or business reasons. There are also concerns about: Equity and access : The bond may prevent legitimate visitors from applying due to high upfront costs. Tourism industry impacts : Travel and hospitality sectors may see a decline in visitors from affected regions. Administrative burden : Processing, monitoring, and refunding bonds will require significant resources from ICE, DHS, and Treasury. What to expect next and how to prepare? The pilot program is expected to take effect by August 20, 2025, so travelers should watch for the official country list and implementation guidelines on Until then, visa applications remain unaffected by the bond. For travelers from potentially impacted countries: Consider applying before the bond rule takes effect. Budget for the bond if you plan to travel after August. Prepare all required documents to improve your chances of approval without bond enforcement. Monitor updates through your local U.S. embassy or consulate. A major shift in U.S. visa policy The visa bond pilot program marks a major shift in U.S. immigration and travel policy. By imposing a refundable financial penalty for potential overstays, the U.S. hopes to curb illegal immigration while maintaining security. But with the global travel industry still recovering, this rule could have wide-reaching consequences for international relationships, tourism, and immigrant communities. Whether this pilot becomes permanent will depend on how it unfolds over the next 12 months. For now, travelers, legal experts, and policymakers will be watching closely. FAQs: Q1: What is the U.S. visa bond rule for 2025? The U.S. may soon ask visa applicants to pay up to $15,000 as a refundable bond to enter the country. Q2: Who needs to pay the new visa bond? Business and tourist visa applicants from countries with high overstay rates may be asked to pay.
