Petronas poised to help accelerate Asian energy transition

KUALA LUMPUR: Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) is set to strengthen its role in accelerating the regional energy transition by hosting the second edition of Energy Asia 2025 from June 16.
The three-day conference here aims to serve as a high-level platform, bringing together global energy leaders to deliberate on collaborative strategies for achieving a sustainable energy future across Asia — and, by extension, the world.
Petronas vice president of group strategic relations and communications Ir Norafizal Mat Saad said the event underscores the company's long-term commitment to fostering regional cooperation and catalysing collective progress toward a more inclusive and comprehensive energy transition.
"Energy Asia is about how Petronas play a role in bringing together the agenda of energy transition for Asia. This is where the leaders from all over the world will come and convene.
"Hopefully this kind of session will further drive and collaborate the energy transition efforts throughout Asia and which has also impacted the world," he told a press conference at Petronas Lunch Escape: Road to Energy Asia here today.
Petronas gathered nearly 100 media and communications professionals from over 30 organisations for a lunch talk titled 'Road to Energy Asia 2025', aiming to build momentum ahead of its flagship energy conference next month.
The session offered a preview of the upcoming Energy Asia 2025.
Energy Asia 2025 will feature more than 180 global speakers and is expected to draw over 4,000 delegates from 50 countries.
Its programme includes over 50 strategic dialogues under themes such as energy policy, markets, innovation, capital, sustainability and talent development.
Petronas senior general manager and strategy, planning and governance Datin Arni Laily Anwarrudin said the efforts to strengthen Energy Asia are being continued annually, particularly with the second edition this year focusing on expanding the programme's reach and impact.
Arni said this year, in addition to the chief executive officer (CEO) roundtable session, Petronas is also introducing and enhancing the Future Energy Leaders programme, which targets the younger generation.
"This initiative aims to cultivate a new generation that is not only interested but also committed to participating in the energy transition agenda.
"The programme is also designed to create a more holistic ecosystem by exposing young talent to opportunities within the evolving energy transition landscape," she added.
Meanwhile, Arni said the Energy Park, a core component of the event, will be revamped this year, expanding to two to three times the size of the 2023 edition and showcasing a more immersive blend of technology and innovation.
She said curating the right mix of participants is central to the event's mission.
"The target that has been set for us goes beyond numbers. It is about getting the right mix of delegates. One of the things we are very deliberate about is ensuring we bring together policymakers, academicians, C-suites, founders, tech experts, innovators, and energy companies.
"We don't just want decision-makers and executives in the room, but we want young people, emerging leaders, and diverse voices who will actually be part of the transition. More women representation is also a key consideration," she added.

Why squeeze high Petronas dividend amid profit slump, Hamzah asks

Bersatu deputy president Hamzah Zainudin said a looming 10% jobs cut in Petronas could have been avoided if the government had adjusted the dividend amount. PETALING JAYA : Opposition leader Hamzah Zainudin has questioned the government's move to collect RM32 billion in dividends from Petronas, despite the company reporting a sharp decline in profits this year. Hamzah said the dividend payout for 2025 matches that of the previous year, even though Petronas recorded a 32% drop in profits in 2024, after a 21% decline in 2023. He said maintaining such a high payout raises questions about the government's fiscal priorities, especially as more than 5,000 Petronas employees (about 10% of its workforce) are expected to lose their jobs in a restructuring exercise. 'The government must clearly explain the rationale behind maintaining the RM32 billion dividend without taking into account Petronas's profit slump and the welfare of its employees. The rakyat deserves to know, is this what the government considers fair fiscal management?' he said in a statement. Hamzah said the layoffs could have been avoided if the government had adjusted the dividend amount in line with Petronas's financial performance, rather than pushing the company to deliver the same amount. Yesterday, Petronas announced plans to reduce its workforce and freeze hiring until December 2026 as part of a restructuring aimed at cutting costs amid falling crude prices. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim today said most of those affected by the retrenchment are contract workers. In February, finance minister II Amir Hamzah Azizan said that Petronas's commitment to paying RM32 billion in dividends to the government remained unchanged. However, he said that the payout would depend on Petronas's financial performance and the outlook of the oil market. Separately, Bersatu vice-president Radzi Jidin reminded the government that the loss of jobs, whether of permanent staff or contract staff, would leave a big impact on them and their families. 'Humanity must always be at the heart of our actions,' Radzi said in a Facebook post.

Rental aid for Putra Heights gas explosion victims extended to next April

The explosion on April 1 sent flames more than 30m high, with temperatures reaching 1,000°C, and left a 9.8m-deep crater at the site. SHAH ALAM : The Selangor government will continue providing rental assistance to victims of the gas pipeline explosion at Putra Heights in Subang Jaya at least until April next year. State housing and culture committee chairman Borhan Aman Shah said the RM2,000 monthly rental assistance will ensure victims have appropriate shelter until their homes are repaired. 'Initially, the state government agreed to provide rental support for six months, but we have decided to extend it for up to a year or more, especially for homes that were completely destroyed, as rebuilding will take time,' he said in a statement today. 'For houses that were partially damaged, assistance will also continue until repairs are fully completed. 'The aid will only be discontinued once the occupants are able to return to their homes.' Borhan said the state government will monitor the progress of the repair to ensure efficient use of funds allocated for the assistance. On April 30, menteri besar Amirudin Shari announced that the Selangor government had allocated RM2.73 million in rental assistance to 455 families affected by the incident, covering six months from April. The Petronas gas pipeline fire on April 1 sent flames more than 30m high, with temperatures reaching 1,000°C. The blaze took nearly eight hours to extinguish and left a 9.8m-deep crater at the site.
