Petronas job cuts linked to AI and tech shift: PM
However, he said, affected employees were not being neglected as various initiatives were in place to safeguard their welfare and that of their families — including offering them positions in other government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs).
"This isn't a minor issue — we are deeply concerned. I have personally held multiple discussions with the group chief executive officer Tengku Tan Sri Muhammad Taufik to address this matter," Anwar said during Prime Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat.
He noted that the national oil company remains profitable, raising questions by certain quarters of why such job cuts are necessary.
"The justification lies in improving operational efficiency through new technologies, including digitalisation and AI, which have led to role redundancies," he said in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin), who asked about the reasons behind Petronas' decision to reduce its workforce.
Meanwhile, in response to a question from Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman (Muda-Muar), Anwar said Petronas will proceed with liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports from the United States only based on national needs and commercial viability.
"Under the agreement, we import only what is necessary. One of the countries we currently import from is the United States.
"But we must also remember that we are exporting as well. If the price is competitive and the project is considered commercially viable and reasonable, it makes sense to import more, including from the US, because we still have demand from Japan, Korea and China.
"Therefore, I do not see this as a problem as we import only what is necessary and based on commercial terms that will not burden Petronas or the country."
Anwar was responding to Syed Saddiq, who questioned how Petronas could protect its profits if it made annual LNG purchases worth US$3.4 billion (RM14.39 billion), on top of its current imports. These purchases are part of Malaysia's deal with Washington to reduce tariff rates.

Petronas Ownership Remains Under Federal Govt, Steps Taken To Enhance Participation Of States -- Azalina
Petronas Ownership Remains Under Federal Govt, Steps Taken To Enhance Participation Of States -- Azalina KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 14 (Bernama) -- The ownership of Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas) remains with the federal government, although steps were taken to enhance the participation of states through strategic collaboration platforms, joint project implementation, and involvement in the value chain, said Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said. Azalina said the federal government's approach is aligned with an inclusive federal structure and ensures sustained benefits for all parties. The minister said that the federal government is currently the sole owner of Petronas, which is incorporated under the Companies Act 1965 as the national oil and gas company. 'The Petroleum Development Act 1974 (Act 144) entrusts Petronas with ownership of petroleum, along with the exclusive rights, powers, freedoms, and privileges to explore, manage, and develop the country's petroleum resources, whether onshore, offshore, or in Malaysian waters,' she said in a response posted on the Parliament's website today. Azalina was responding to Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan (GRS-Keningau), who asked whether the government could consider distributing 50 per cent shares in Petronas to oil- and gas-producing territories and states, namely Sarawak, Sabah, Terengganu, and Kelantan. According to Jeffrey, the distribution is a fundamental step to strengthen the Malaysian Federation moving forward, while easing politicisation and dissatisfaction over oil and gas rights. Azalina said that although the ownership of Petronas is under the federal government, the current approach allows producing states to receive direct benefits from the petroleum industry through cash payments and various forms of commercial cooperation. 'At the same time, overall revenues from the sector are fairly distributed across the country in line with national development needs,' she added. -- BERNAMA

Anwar set to deliver important address to civil servants tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is set to deliver a major address to Malaysia's civil servants at the 20th edition of the Majlis Amanat Perdana Perkhidmatan Awam (MAPPA XX) tomorrow, held at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC). Dr Saharah Sapiyi, Head of the Centre for Communication and Language Studies at the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan), said the prime minister's address, scheduled for 3.30pm, will be the highlight of the annual event. "MAPPA XX provides a key platform for the prime minister to engage directly with civil servants and communicate his vision for the nation. It is typically where major announcements related to the civil service are made. "Last year, the prime minister unveiled the Public Service Remuneration System (SSPA), and this year, we have been informed that new announcements will be made, including the launch of the Public Service Talent Development Policy, which will serve as a guide for heads of departments and agencies in nurturing talent within their organisations," she said during a video call on Bernama TV's Malaysia Petang Ini programme. Saharah added that this year's MAPPA would be held under the theme Perkhidmatan Awam MADANI Teras Kecemerlangan (Madani Civil Service: Pillar of Excellence), which highlights not only leadership aspirations but also a reflection of the core Madani values guiding Malaysia's current governance reforms. "The event also emphasises the civil service reform agenda led by the Chief Secretary to the Government, alongside values-driven service excellence promoted by the director-general of Public Service," she said. Saharah said prior to the main address, civil servants attending MAPPA XX would be invited to participate in the Tazkirah Jumaat (religious reflection session) at 12.45 pm, followed by Friday prayers at Dewan Putra, PICC, which can accommodate up to 1,000 worshippers. Other activities in conjunction with MAPPA XX include the Cakna Inspirasi Forum at 2.30pm, focusing on social media and the spirit of independence, as well as 43 exhibition booths showcasing ministries, government agencies, and departments from 9am to 5pm. These booths will feature services such as traffic summons payment and discounts, as well as admissions information from higher education institutions. - BERNAMA

AGC: No issue of Anwar being disqualified as PM, MP
In a statement today, the AGC said this was because the royal pardon granted by the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong stated that Anwar had been fully pardoned and regarded as a person who had never committed any offence. – Bernama photo KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 14): The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) said there is no issue of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim being disqualified as an MP and Prime Minister. In a statement today, the AGC said this was because the royal pardon granted by the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong stated that Anwar had been fully pardoned and regarded as a person who had never committed any offence. 'Any challenge to the election of an MP should be through an election petition, as provided for under Article 118 of the Federal Constitution, and must be filed within the time frame set out under Section 38 of the Election Offences Act 1954,' it said. The AGC was responding to a suit filed by former Minister in the Prime Minister's Department P. Waytha Moorthy, who is seeking to nullify Anwar's election as Tambun MP and his appointment as Prime Minister. It said Waytha Moorthy's action was based on the argument that the pardon granted to Anwar did not include the annulment of his disqualification under Article 48(1)(e) of the Federal Constitution. 'The AGC respects the right of any individual to file an action in court. In this matter, the Court of Appeal, in the case of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim v Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz [2023] 2 MLJ 545, decided that the King has the power to grant a pardon in respect of a conviction and sentence,' it said. On Aug 12, Waytha Moorthy filed an originating summons in the High Court here seeking a declaration that Anwar's appointment as Prime Minister on Nov 24, 2022, was unconstitutional, null and void. The Hindraf chairman is also seeking a declaration that Anwar's election as Tambun MP in the 15th General Election was also unconstitutional, null and void. – Bernama AGC Anwar Ibrahim disqualified mp PM Waytha Moorthy
