'Must-see' crime drama with 100% Rotten Tomatoes score soars up streaming charts

Viewers have hailed the series as "one of the best shows of the year"
A crime drama that fans have hailed a 'must-see' and even 'one of the best shows of the year' has climbed its way up Amazon Prime Video's charts.
Ballard is a spin-off of Bosch, which aired between 2014 and 2021 and followed Los Angeles Police Detective Harry Bosch (played by Titus Welliver).

This time, Maggie Q takes the lead role as LAPD Detective Renée Ballard, another character based on Michael Connelly's detective novels.

The ten-part series sees her take command of the LAPD's new cold case unit within the Robbery-Homicide Division, as she leads a team attempting to solve decades-old murders.
As she opens up the investigations, Ballard uncovers a web of corruption and secrets within the police department.

The synopsis teases: 'Detective Renée Ballard plunges into a web of murder and corruption as she hunts a ruthless serial killer and uncovers a sinister police conspiracy that threatens everything she stands for.
'With her own demons nipping at her heels, Ballard must outwit both criminals and colleagues to bring long-overdue justice to the victims and their families.'
Just days after it was released, Ballard has landed the number one spot on Amazon Prime Video's UK charts and scored a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating.

One person praised on Rotten Tomatoes: 'It doesn't disappoint and lives up to all expectations. It should surprise no one that Michael Connelly has another winner. Must see TV!'
Another said: 'I can't stop watching it. After every episode, I think, "I need to go do x," but then I watch another.'

'Very engaging, binged the whole thing without stopping,' someone else said.
Over on X, a fan wrote: '#Ballard is amazing. It picks up the pace when needed but also slows down, giving you time to breathe without ever being boring. It's been so long since I've seen a show do that, and isn't just a sensory overload (even if you binge it in a day). Also Maggie Q is absolutely [fire].'
'What a rollercoaster! Ballard was worth the binge... So far, Harry Bosch's universe remains undefeated,' another added.

As well as roaring reviews from audience members, critics have hailed the Amazon Prime series.
'Smartly acted, beautifully paced and genuinely engaging, 'Ballard' is a thrilling ride from start to finish,' a Variety critic said.

A review from Paste Magazine added: 'Ballard is kick-a**, earnest, and extremely well-written, and may well be one of the best shows of the year.'
Addressing the demands for a second season, Maggie Q revealed to Variety: 'The good news is we have a writers' room already, so that's very positive. That does not mean we're going to get greenlit for a second season!
'I wish it did, but I've had writers' room start and then get ended. But the good news is that we are breaking the second season, which is very exciting.'
Ballard is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood star unrecognisable from iconic episode of Doctor Who

An actor from one of the most beloved episodes of Doctor Who is practically unrecognisable in the new Outlander prequel Warning - this article contains major spoilers for Outlander: Blood of My Blood ‌ Outlander fans may not realise one of the most beloved guest stars from Doctor Who has taken on a completely different role in the new prequel series. ‌ Premiering this weekend, die-hard enthusiasts have already been treated to two episodes of Starz's highly anticipated prequel series, Outlander: Blood of My Blood. ‌ It's already picked up rave reviews, scoring an incredible 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. The epic historical drama finally unveils the hidden narrative that led to the birth of the original show's two leads, Claire (played by Caitriona Balfe) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan). Harriet Slater and Jamie Roy step into the roles of Jamie's parents in 18th Century Scotland, while Jeremy Irvine and Hermione Corfield play Claire's parents against the backdrop of the First World War. ‌ The 10-episode first season also features a stellar supporting cast, with many well-known Scottish stars taking on major roles. Among them is Tony Curran portraying Jamie's grandfather Lord Lovat, who has so far taken on an antagonistic role. ‌ Take this as your last spoiler warning if you've not yet tuned into the premiere. The first episodes drop a huge bombshell, as both Henry (Irvine) and Julia (Corfield) are whisked back in time to the 1700s during a trip to Scotland. Tragically, the pair are separated and, while Henry quickly manages to make his way up the ranks of society, Julia is trapped as one of Lovat's servants. Lovat makes menacing advances towards her, forcing her to stay on her toes and adhere to the guidance of the strict housekeeper. ‌ Viewers are now desperate to see Julia escape his grasp and reunite with Henry but, with eight episodes and a second season confirmed to be coming soon, it could be years before they manage to return to their time, if they ever do. ‌ For fans of time-travel dramas, actor Curran may be unrecognisable from the last time they saw him. Known for roles in films such as Outlaw King and TV dramas like Mary & George, one of his most iconic performances was portraying the misunderstood Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh during Matt Smith's tenure in Doctor Who. Widely considered one of the best episodes of the sci-fi staple, his portrayal of the troubled painter who is taken to the future to learn just how appreciated his work eventually became is worlds away from the predatory Lord Lovat. Hopefully Julia will be able to escape his clutches soon following her unsuccessful attempt to flee at the end of episode two.

'Amazon Prime war drama is dubbed perfect but I stopped watching within minutes'

I tried to watch a new war drama that everyone has been talking about, but I soon had to switch off. The reason I couldn't see it through may surprise a lot of people With so many choices available, it can be hard to decide what to watch on TV nowadays - after all, there are so many different streaming services and channels to choose from. Even so, every now and then we look for something different to really get our teeth into. ‌ I haven't watched a war drama for quite some time but one had grabbed my attention, as so many people had been talking about it. The Narrow Road to the Deep North has recently made its way onto BBC iPlayer and the Australian drama miniseries, which is based on the novel of the same name by Richard Flanagan, stars Jacob Elordi, Odessa Young and Ciarán Hinds. Since its release, it's been labelled "magnificent" in reviews I've read; however, I personally had some issues trying to watch it. ‌ The series, which was initially released on Amazon Prime back in April, focuses on the character of Dorrigo Evans across three periods - the time before his deployment to the Second World War, during his time as a Far East prisoner of war and years after the war too, and it's said to be a truly captivating tale. ‌ Not to mention, a love affair also features in the narrative. Being intrigued by the plot, and being a big fan of Elordi, I tuned in hoping it would become my latest TV addiction, but I couldn't make it past a few minutes in. While I have no doubt the show is gripping in many ways, I just couldn't bring myself to watch it. I'll admit the reason why left me a little surprised. ‌ A few minutes into the show, bombs started to drop, which is naturally expected when you're watching a war series; however, it wasn't until I tuned in that I realised I couldn't watch anything about war for the time being. As much as I wanted to stick with it, I couldn't, as I quickly learnt it left me feeling triggered and upset. Perhaps it's because I work in the world of news, or perhaps it's because I watch too much news, but I soon realised war wasn't something I could watch played out on my screen. All of a sudden it hit me that there's been so much conflict in the world in recent years that I'm not quite in the right mindset to dive back into WW2. Though I don't shy away from the news, in my downtime, it seems as though I do need to stay away from such horrific stories. ‌ It made me wonder if we are all seeking a bit of TV "fluff" lately or, at least, something a little lighter, funnier or simply less sad. As much as I wish I could watch The Narrow Road to the Deep North and see what all the fuss is about, I feel like some of us are just craving something different when it comes to TV at the moment. In time, I'm sure this feeling will pass, and I'll be able to watch these historic tales again. But, for now, I just feel like I need something comforting and less violent as I had to switch off within minutes. Despite me being unable to tune in, the show has received rave reviews from fans on social media. My inability to see it through perhaps says nothing about how good it is. ‌ One person said: "Wow... there has never been many shows or movies I've watched and thought at the end 'that was perfect'. Honestly five stars in my books. "Visually stunning, amazing acting - it pulled at your heart and you really truly felt everything. The trauma, pain and love. It was dark and beautiful. That was worth every minute of my time." Another added: "It was a profoundly moving but dark series. As one that had not read the book before watching it, I found the love affair to be nuanced and tragic. "The scenes of torture and beatings were horrific to watch. But to me, the ending was gut wrenching." One more also wrote: "Just finished watching this series, and I'm in awe of the storytelling, the cinematography and the music. Truly depressing through and through until the bitter end, but will definitely stick with me for some time."

'Captivating' 90s TV drama with a 'rich cast' is available to stream and fans are loving it

'Captivating' 90s TV drama with a 'rich cast' is available to stream and fans are loving it The BBC drama This Life was first broadcast in 1996 and ran for two series and 33 episodes, but it is still considered a classic by fans and has been hailed as the 'best British TV drama ever' Fans are hailing This Life 'the best British TV drama ever' (Image: BBC) Iconic 90s TV drama This Life that had everyone talking around the office water cooler at the time has made a comeback on Amazon Prime. ‌ This Life, which first aired in 1996 and spanned 33 episodes over just two series, was included in BFI's list of the 100 greatest British television programmes and has been lauded by fans as the 'best British TV drama ever'. ‌ The hard-hitting BBC drama revolves around a group of law graduates in their twenties, embarking on their professional journeys whilst cohabiting in a house in south London. There are no courtroom scenes and instead the drama focuses on their personal lives, encompassing everything from infidelity to addiction. ‌ Among the cast members is Andrew Lincoln, who has since enjoyed a successful career in Teachers, Afterlife, The Walking Dead and the film Love, Actually. He will soon be appearing in the new ITV series Coldwater alongside Welsh star Eve Myles. The housemates were embroiled in plenty of drama (Image: BBC) His co-star Jack Davenport has also found success in the Matt Damon film The Talented Mr Ripley, Pirates of the Caribbean and TV series like Coupling and Smash, reports the Mirror. ‌ This Life centres on five main characters sharing a home - Edgar 'Egg' Cooke (Lincoln) and his girlfriend Milly (Amita Dhiri), alongside party girl Anna Forbes (Daniela Nardini), her university ex Myles Stewart (Davenport) and Welshman Warren Jones (Jason Hughes), who was grappling with his sexuality. The cast also features Ramon Tikaram (Virdie) as Ferdy, Natasha Little as Rachel, Steven John Shepherd (Karen Pirie) as Jo and Luisa Bradshaw-White (EastEnders) ad Kira. The programme, conceived by Amy Jenkins, evolved into a beloved word-of-mouth sensation and secured its place on the BFI's list of the 100 greatest British television programmes. ‌ This Life started in 1996 and spanned 33 episodes (Image: BBC) In 2007 there was a special episode, This Life: 10 Years On, which reunited the main cast and explored their lives a decade after the series ended. The reunion special, centring on Ferdy's death and the resulting gathering of former housemates, attracted 3.5 million viewers. Despite being three decades old and originating from an era long before social media existed, fans are now discovering episodes through streaming platforms and have been flocking to IMDb to share their reactions. ‌ One viewer commented: "I still hold firmly to the belief that the last episode of this landmark show is the best 40 mins of British TV drama ever. Any number of storylines coming sharply to a head, the terrific wedding reception with its toilet sex and terrible dancing, darkest secrets coming horrifyingly to light and the legendary punch. "But how sad! If we'd known then that there would never be another series we would have stormed the BBC ourselves. But think positive. The show is endlessly rewatchable, and its influence has lived on in Queer as Folk, Attachments, Teachers, Metropolis, Tinsel Town and most contemporary drama since. Just please, please publish the damn scripts!" The BBC series aired from 1996 to 1997 (Image: BBC) ‌ Another said: "Move over Friends this is your more intelligent English big brother. A perfect picture of 90s London through the eyes of young professionals and ordinary blokes and girls. A few cheesy performances by Tikarum but it sort of worked at the time much like the Fonz worked in Happy days at the time. Not a poor performance from a rich cast that all went in to achieve memorable careers. This is a collectors piece for those who lived through and experienced the era in London. Nostalgic and immersive TV." A third added: "Watching This Life almost 30 years after its release is an interesting experience. Although its format has been much copied since the late 90s, it still retains the same freshness and vitality that made it such a captivating watch first time round. "The success of the series stems from the fact that it feels so real. Each of the characters is impressively three-dimensional, with both strengths and weaknesses. They're at that interesting stage of their lives where they're finding their way in the world while also trying to find themselves, and each of them makes some understandable mistakes along the way."
