Making 'History' – Fiorentina 0-3 Inter Milan First Three-Goal Defeat For Inter In Six Years

Yahoo07-02-2025

Yesterday's Serie A defeat at the hands of Fiorentina was the first time Inter Milan have lost by a three-goal margin in six years.
This is highlighted in today's print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note that the last defeat by such a margin was a 4-1 reversal by Napoli in 2019.
Inter got a massive shock at the hands of Fiorentina yesterday evening.
The margin of the scoreline ultimately mattered little, as a loss meant staying three points behind Napoli either way.
Still, Moise Kean's second goal late in the match undeniably deepened Inter's humiliation.
The Nerazzurri can certainly lose matches. But they are used to doing so by a respectable scoreline.
That was certainly not the case yesterday. Playing with a major injury crisis, Fiorentina not only beat Inter, but absolutely routed them.
As the Gazzetta highlight, the last time that Inter Milan lost a match by three clear goals came all the way back in May of 2019.
At that time, Luciano Spalletti was still on the bench for the Nerazzurri. The now-Italy coach was taking charge of his second last match at the club.
That match came right at the end of the 2018-19 season, against Napoli.
The Partenopei demolished Inter by a 4-1 scoreline on that evening. Carlo Ancelotti was the coach for the Campanian side.
Since then, Ancelotti has had a spell at Everton in the Premier League and won the Champions League twice with Real Madrid.
Spalletti, meanwhile, has won the Serie A title with Napoli.
Inter Milan, meanwhile, have won the Serie A title twice under two different coaches. They have also reached the Champions League and Europa League finals.

Mancini on Italy's bad luck football's, striker prediction and ‘one of football's greatest mysteries'

In the second part of his interview with Gazzetta dello Sport, ex-Italy coach Roberto Mancini said the Azzurri had had 'terrible bad luck' in missing out on the 2022 World Cup and insisted that Simone Pafundi's lack of playing time in Serie A is 'one of football's greatest mysteries.' Former Italy CT Mancini admitted he'd love to return to Coverciano to replace Luciano Spalletti, but his interview with Gazzetta included more of his thoughts about his spell as the Azzurri boss and his view on some Italian players. Advertisement Currently, the environment around the Azzurri is beyond negative as the team lost 3-0 to Norway in their 2026 World Cup Qualifiers debut, leading to Spalletti's dismissal. Fans and media are pessimistic about the Azzurri's chances of qualifying for the tournament to be held in the USA next year. 'It's the easiest thing to latch onto. Because it pays off more, negative news is what makes headlines; it gets people talking,' Mancini explained. The 60-year-old won Euro 2020 as the Italy coach, but failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. Advertisement 'If Dibu Martinez hadn't made that save on Kolo Muani at minute 120, Argentina would have lost the World Cup, which they won on penalties. At the same time, sometimes you have terrible bad luck, like we did, missing out on the World Cup. 'We dominated the group, but were eliminated due to two missed penalties and a loss to North Macedonia, despite having 27 shots to their one. That game should have ended 4-1 or 5-1, just like the one in Basel should have ended 3-0. Football sometimes gives and sometimes takes away. We had a bit of luck winning the Euros and a lot of bad luck missing out on the World Cup.' I can't understand how he's not playing in Serie A,' Mancini said. 'I've seen him up close several times, but there are others too. If you don't put them on the field, how are they supposed to improve? 'A young player needs to play, sit out, play again, but then comes the most important party: they need to be allowed to make mistakes.' Pafundi returned to Udinese in the January transfer window after a one-year loan at Lausanne-Sport. The 19-year-old has 19 Serie A appearances. Which other young Italian players have caught Mancio's eyes? 'I had already said Fazzini, and he got a bit more playing time. I really like Liberali, and Lucca could become an excellent striker,' Mancini concluded.

Beckham, Bale, Bellingham – Trent adds to list of British players to join Madrid

Trent Alexander-Arnold has been publicly presented as a Real Madrid player after leaving Liverpool following the expiration of his contract. Here, the PA news agency looks at the Spanish giants' previous high-profile British signings. Laurie Cunningham (1979-84) England winger Cunningham lit up the Bernabeu after his move from West Brom (PA) The winger became the first British professional player to move to the Bernabeu after Los Blancos agreed a £950,000 deal with West Brom in 1979. The Londoner helped the side to a league and cup double in his first season but that proved the peak as injuries blighted the remainder of his time at the club. Steve McManaman (1999-2003) McManaman was one of the first big-name English players to exploit the Bosman ruling when he quit Liverpool to join Real on a free transfer. He won the Champions League twice – scoring a memorable goal in a player-of-the-match display against Valencia in the 2000 final – as well as LaLiga on two occasions. David Beckham (2003-07) David Beckham's fortunes in Madrid were mixed (Nick Potts/PA) Beckham and Real Madrid seemed a match made in heaven, but the anticipated glut of trophies did not follow. Things turned sour after Fabio Capello took over as manager in 2006 and, amid contract wrangling, the England captain was frozen out. That pushed him to agree a move to LA Galaxy but there was to be a happy ending as he was recalled for the run-in and played a pivotal role as Real claimed the league crown. Michael Owen (2004-05) The England forward spent a single season at the Bernabeu after Liverpool agreed to a cut-price £8million sale after tiring of months of contract negotiations. But he did not settle well and, despite scoring a creditable 16 goals in 45 appearances, mostly from the bench, did not look like supplanting Ronaldo or Raul in the team. He was sold to Newcastle after a year, for £15m. Jonathan Woodgate (2004-07) Woodgate's spell in Spain was an unhappy one (Nick Potts/PA) England centre-back Woodgate endured a torrid spell in the Spanish capital with a succession of injuries limiting him to just 14 appearances in two years. He did not play at all in his first season and, when his debut belatedly came against Athletic Bilbao in September 2005, he scored an own goal and received a red card. He departed for Middlesbrough in 2006, initially on loan. Gareth Bale (2013-22) Statistically, the Welsh winger belongs among Real's greats having helped the club to five Champions Leagues and three LaLiga titles following his world-record £85m move from Tottenham. Highlights included two goals against Liverpool, one a spectacular overhead kick, in the 2018 Champions League final but supporters were never truly won over amid a perceived rivalry with team-mate and fan favourite Cristiano Ronaldo. Embracing a Welsh fan's flag reading 'Wales. Golf. Madrid. In that order' hardly helped. Caroline Weir (2022-present) Weir (left) has made a strong impression at Real (Jane Barlow/PA) The Scotland international moved to Real from Manchester City in 2022 and enjoyed a superb first season in Liga F, scoring 19 goals in 28 appearances as the team finished runners-up to Barcelona. She also scored against City to knock her old club out of the Champions League. A cruciate ligament injury prevented her building on that last term before her return to action earlier this season. Jude Bellingham (2023-present) It is sometimes difficult to believe Bellingham is still only 21, such is the remarkable impression the England midfielder has made in the game, first at Borussia Dortmund and now at Real. Revelling in an attacking role, he shone from the moment he arrived in Spain, scoring 23 goals and providing 13 assists in his first campaign that produced a LaLiga and Champions League double.

'Dream come true' for Alexander-Arnold as he is introduced by Real Madrid

MADRID (AP) — Trent Alexander-Arnold was officially introduced by Real Madrid on Thursday, saying he was fulfilling his dream to play for the Spanish powerhouse. The 26-year-old England back was the latest reinforcement on defense for Madrid after a season in which the back line struggled following injuries. Madrid moved forward with signing Alexander-Arnold from Liverpool — for a reported fee of up to 10 million euros ($11.5 million) — to get him on June 1 instead of for free at the end of the month. That allowed Madrid to count on the defender to play for Xabi Alonso's team at the Club World Cup in the United States. Madrid opens its Club World Cup group-stage campaign against Saudi club Al-Hilal next Wednesday at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens. Alexander-Arnold was accompanied by his parents and relatives in the capital. After signing the contract alongside Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, he was introduced with a video of his highlights and then spoke briefly, in Spanish. 'Thank you for this opportunity,' he said. 'To sign with a club like Real Madrid doesn't happen very often. It's a dream come true. I'm very happy and proud to be here. I'm very excited to show my game to Madrid fans but I'm aware that it's a great responsibility to play for Real Madrid. I'm ready to give my all for this team and for the fans.' Madrid also this week introduced central defender Dean Huijsen. Alexander-Arnold, who will wear the No. 12 jersey, arrived on a six-year contract through June 2031. He will join fellow England international Jude Bellingham. Alexander-Arnold won nine titles with Liverpool, including one Champions League and two Premier Leagues. 'We welcome a player who has won everything and who marked an era in a prestigious club such as Liverpool,' Pérez said. 'You could have continued playing in any other club but you chose to continue your career with our club and we will never forget that.' Madrid and the other 31 teams playing in the Club World Cup are allowed to make early signings in FIFA-approved special transfer windows from June 1-10 and June 27-July 3. Alexander-Arnold had already announced he was leaving his boyhood club with Madrid the expected destination. He made 354 appearances for Liverpool and scored 23 goals. By its own high standards, Madrid had a disappointing season, finishing runner-up to rival Barcelona in La Liga and being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the Champions League despite having signed France star Kylian Mbappé last summer. ___ AP soccer:
