OAPF constable accused of rape attempt dismissed
Biranchi Munda, posted in Bareipali police station, was arrested on Tuesday for attempting to sexually assault the 14-year-old girl who happens to be his relative.
Police said the incident took place on Sunday. Munda took the minor to attend the Sital Sasthi festival. While returning from the festival, he reportedly took her to an isolated place and attempted to rape her. However, the victim managed to escape from the spot. On reaching home, she narrated the incident to her parents who lodged a complaint with Bareipali police on Monday. After recording the girl's statement, police sent her to the hospital for medical examination. When the news of the incident spread, locals gheraoed the police station, demanding arrest of the accused constable. They also demanded compensation for the victim.
Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Sambalpur Tophan Bagh said the accused is currently in judicial custody. He has also been dismissed from service by the Sambalpur SP and further investigation is underway.

Villager killed in elephant attack in Keonjhar
Keonjhar: A 27-year-old man was killed by an elephant in Keonjhar district's Bhuyan Juang Pirha range on Sunday, marking the second fatality within a week. The deceased was identified as Parshu Munda of Adal village under Banspal block. The elephant struck him with its trunk leading to his death. Forest officials reached the spot in the evening and sent Munda's body for an autopsy. Munda is survived by his wife and four children, including a 9-month-old daughter. The family had gone to observe Gamha Purnima, a local festival, when the tragedy occurred. Range officer of Bhuyan Juang Pirha, Nayan Kanta Sahu, said, "We are tracking the movement of elephants and warning locals to take precautions while venturing out." Keonjhar divisional forest officer Dhanraj H D announced that the govt will provide compensation of Rs 10 lakh to Munda's family, with an immediate aid of Rs 1 lakh. Last month, Debadi Barik of Govindpur village was killed in an elephant attack while trying to protect his crops. On hearing the news, his wife consumed poison and is in a critical condition at SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack. Villagers urged the govt to implement effective measures to protect lives, crops and property from elephants.

Elephants trample tribal man to death in Keonjhar
Keonjhar: A 45-year-old tribal man was trampled to death by two female elephants in Khendra (Magan Sahi) village under Karakhendra panchayat, near the Odisha-Jharkhand border in Keonjhar district, in the early hours of Monday after the animals crossed over from Jharkhand around 11pm on Sunday. In an attempt to drive the elephants back into the forest, villagers intervened. During the commotion, the deceased, Nundu Munda, reportedly got too close to the animals and was fatally attacked by one of them. Upon being alerted, the Barbil forest range team and local police reached the spot and recovered Munda's body. The body was later sent to Barbil Government Hospital for post-mortem. Divisional forest officer of Keonjhar, Dhanraj H D, said the victim's family would receive Rs 10 lakh as compensation. He urged villagers to follow safety protocols around elephants, stating, "Despite several awareness campaigns, people continue to approach elephants, putting themselves at risk."

10 families ostracised for giving up cattle grazing, probe ordered
Jamshedpur: Ten families in a village in Chakradharpur block of West Singhbhum district have allegedly been ostracized by their neighbours for migrating from their traditional profession of grazing cattle to agrarian work in the hopes of better earnings. West Singhbhum deputy commissioner (DC) Chandan Kumar on Friday said an investigation has been launched while the district officials have been asked to take legal action against Bagun Jamuda, the head of Chirubeda village under Gurulkera panchayat, who issued the decree to the other residents of the village. The bizarre incident occurred nearly 10 days ago, but the matter came to light after 40 members of the 10 families, who were facing social boycott, met DC in Chaibasa on Friday and sought justice. The families claimed that Munda, enraged with their decision to switch to agrarian work, ordered grocery store owners to not sell food items and other items of daily need to them. "He also imposed a ban on inviting us to social gatherings and asked the priests not to visit our house to perform rituals," they told Kumar. When three of the shepherd families did not obey the diktat, Munda imposed a penalty of Rs 10,000 on them. DC said Munda was removed from his post and officials were asked to take action against him.
