OAPF constable accused of rape attempt dismissed

SAMBALPUR: A constable of Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF) was dismissed from service on Wednesday following his arrest on charges of trying to rape a minor girl. Biranchi Munda, posted in Bareipali police station, was arrested on Tuesday for attempting to sexually assault the 14-year-old girl who happens to be his relative. Police said the incident took place on Sunday. Munda took the minor to attend the Sital Sasthi festival. While returning from the festival, he reportedly took her to an isolated place and attempted to rape her. However, the victim managed to escape from the spot. On reaching home, she narrated the incident to her parents who lodged a complaint with Bareipali police on Monday. After recording the girl's statement, police sent her to the hospital for medical examination. When the news of the incident spread, locals gheraoed the police station, demanding arrest of the accused constable. They also demanded compensation for the victim. Sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Sambalpur Tophan Bagh said the accused is currently in judicial custody. He has also been dismissed from service by the Sambalpur SP and further investigation is underway.

Sambalpur: A 38-year-old constable of the Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF) was dismissed from service on Wednesday, a day after he was arrested for allegedly attempting to rape his 14-year-old niece during the Sital Sasthi festival celebrations. The accused, who was living with the minor's family for several years, allegedly attempted to assault the minor when her family was away attending a Sital Sasthi procession on Monday evening and they were alone at home. The girl managed to escape and later reported the incident to her family when they returned. Following a complaint filed by the family and locals, he was arrested on Tuesday and charged under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. Sambalpur SP Mukesh Bhamoo said the constable had a history of misconduct and had received multiple warnings. "Based on prima facie evidence, we registered a Pocso case against the accused. Following his arrest and court appearance, we took immediate action to dismiss him from service," Bhamoo added. The constable was posted at Bareipali police station. He has been remanded to judicial custody following his court appearance on Tuesday.

Bhubaneswar: Two policemen were killed after a dumper rammed into a PCR van in Cuttack district early on Tuesday. The incident took place near Gatiroutpatna on Cuttack-Paradip highway around 4.30 am. Odisha Auxiliary Police Force (OAPF) constable Lokanath Sabar and home guard Jagannath Mahalik were killed on the spot, while home guard Pabitra Mohan Sethi, who was driving the PCR van, was injured, they added. The dumper, which was transporting sand, hit the PCR van of the CRRI police station, and after the collision, both vehicles overturned and fell into a roadside pit, said Deputy Commissioner of Police Khilari Rishikesh Dnyandeo. 'We have arrested the truck driver, and an investigation has been started,' he said. The truck was speeding on a narrow road and hit the police vehicle, he added. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the next of kin of the deceased police personnel. He also prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured personnel. In Keonjhar district, three persons lost their lives in a road accident on Monday night. A vehicle, which is yet to be identified, hit two motorcycles near Joda flyover around 9 pm, police said. After hitting the motorcycles, the vehicle fled the spot. Three persons were killed, while another three were seriously injured. The bodies were sent for post-mortem and a search was started to trace the vehicle. Meanwhile, the Chief Minister announced an ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh each for the next of kin of the three deceased persons.
