Arkansas' Gage Wood Throws 3rd No-Hitter in CWS history and a record 19 Ks
He bounced back and finished off the third no-hitter in CWS history and first in 65 years on Monday, striking out a record 19 and never letting the Racers come close to getting a hit in the Razorbacks' 3-0 victory.
While trying to close out the game in the ninth inning, Wood hit another Murray State batter, but it was reviewed and overturned for a "lean in", resulting in Wood's 17th strikeout of the afternoon.
Despite achieving a feat only two other pitchers have completed, when Wood was asked about his emotions following the game, he responded:
"I shouldn't have hit the guy… That's all I got to say."
Wood joined Jim Ehrler of Texas in 1950 and Jim Wixson of Oklahoma State in 1960 as the only pitchers to throw CWS no-hitters, and his defense was never really challenged as he dominated a Racers team that was making its first Omaha appearance.
The junior right-hander set the CWS record for strikeouts in a nine-inning game. His bid for a perfect game ended in the eighth when his 2-2 breaking ball hit Dom Decker in his back foot. Wood, who got a foul out and consecutive strikeouts to end the inning, looked skyward and gave a primal scream and did a couple of high steps as he headed to the dugout.
With the victory, the three-seeded Razorbacks kept their CWS hopes alive and will play the loser of Louisiana State vs. UCLA on Tuesday.

Pennsylvania family celebrates rare baseball double — sons in College World Series, Little League World Series
It's been a dream summer of baseball for the Mihos family, who live in Chester Springs, Pennsylvania, and one they say they'll never forget. In June, their middle son, Dean Mihos, played in the College World Series for Coastal Carolina. Now, just weeks later, their youngest son, Theo, is preparing to take the field in Williamsport for the Little League World Series, representing Glenmoore. "My husband put a baseball bat and a glove in their hands and said, 'Go play.' And this is where it's led us to," said Sabrina Mihos, the boys' mom. Back in June, Dean Mihos' run to Omaha with Coastal Carolina was a milestone moment for the family. "Alex and I and Theo, we made it there, and that was an incredible experience," said Ari Mihos, their father. But just when they thought the excitement had ended, the Mihos family was once again packing bags for another once-in-a-lifetime trip, this time to Williamsport. "I thought it was over back in June with the men's College World Series in Omaha," Sabrina Mihos said. "But here we are again, going to Williamsport." Theo, 11, plays second base and will suit up for Glenmoore in Thursday's opening game. "He's excited, but like any 11-year-old, he's also a little bit homesick," Ari Mihos said. "I was an average athlete. I think all my kids' athletic ability come from my wife, more than me, so I'll give her the credit for that." Theo isn't on this journey alone. His two older brothers have been both inspiration and support. "It's a testament to the work they put in. They fell in love with the game," Sabrina Mihos said. "I gave up a couple of journeys to the beach, holidays, because we have a batting cage in the back." Their oldest son, Alex Mihos, just graduated from Widener University, where he pitched for the baseball team. "Theo is becoming a great young man, and Dean is an exceptional leader," Alex Mihos said. "I tried hard," Alex Mihos said. "But watching them accomplish basically my dreams ... is just surreal. It's surreal for me, and I know it's surreal for my parents, too." While the Mihos family is certainly proud of their sons' baseball achievements, they say the lessons go far beyond the field. "We've all been on this journey together, and I'm just so proud of them," Sabrina Mihos said. No matter what happens on the field in Williamsport this week, the Mihos family says they've already won, together.

Nationals beat Giants 8-0, spoil Justin Verlander's 3,500th career strikeout
SAN FRANCISCO — CJ Abrams homered and the Nationals spoiled a milestone achievement by San Francisco's Justin Verlander on Sunday as Washington beat the Giants 8-0. Josh Bell and Paul DeJong had three hits apiece to highlight a 17-hit day for Washington. James Wood had a pair of two-run doubles as the Nationals won a series at Oracle Park for the fourth straight season. Verlander (1-9), the three-time Cy Young Award winner who has struggled in his first season with the Giants, struck out the side in the first inning and became the 10th pitcher in MLB history with 3,500 strikeouts. The milestone mark was the lone bright spot for the 42-year-old Verlander, who was unbeaten in five career starts against the Nationals before Sunday. He allowed 11 hits and five runs with six strikeouts and a walk. MacKenzie Gore (5-12) had 10 strikeouts and pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since July 9. Cole Henry, PJ Poulin and Clayton Beeter each retired three batters to complete the three-hit shutout. Abrams started Washington's offensive onslaught in the second inning with a two-out home run off Verlander that hit the foul pole in right. That came three pitches after Wood doubled in a pair of runs. Wood also connected for a two-run double off Spencer Bivens in the seventh. Blake Burke by the numbers in Knoxville-Biloxi six-game series
A six-game series between Knoxville and Biloxi concluded Sunday in the Southern League at Covenant Health Park. The Smokes won Sunday's series finale, 3-2. Knoxville and Biloxi tied the six-game series, 3-3. The six-game series featured a return to Knoxville for former Vol and Blake Burke. Milwaukee assigned him to Double-A Biloxi from High-A affiliate Wisconsin on Aug. 2. The former Vol was selected by the Brewers with the 34th overall pick in the 2024 MLB draft. In six games for Biloxi at Knoxville, Burke went 5-for-18 and recorded two home runs, two doubles, seven RBIs, two runs, six walks, 13 total bases, six strikeouts and one sacrifice fly. He started at first base in every contest for the Shuckers. Burke played for the Vols from 2022-24 and appeared in 182 games, including 159 starts. He recorded a .332 batting average, 50 home runs, 136 RBIs, 152 runs, 80 walks and 17 stolen bases. Tennessee won a national title in 2024, two SEC Tournaments (2022, 2024), two SEC regular-season championships (2022, 2024) and made two College World Series appearances (2023-24) during Burke's career with the Vols.
