Nationals beat Giants 8-0, spoil Justin Verlander's 3,500th career strikeout

NBC Sports5 days ago
SAN FRANCISCO — CJ Abrams homered and the Nationals spoiled a milestone achievement by San Francisco's Justin Verlander on Sunday as Washington beat the Giants 8-0.
Josh Bell and Paul DeJong had three hits apiece to highlight a 17-hit day for Washington. James Wood had a pair of two-run doubles as the Nationals won a series at Oracle Park for the fourth straight season.
Verlander (1-9), the three-time Cy Young Award winner who has struggled in his first season with the Giants, struck out the side in the first inning and became the 10th pitcher in MLB history with 3,500 strikeouts.
The milestone mark was the lone bright spot for the 42-year-old Verlander, who was unbeaten in five career starts against the Nationals before Sunday. He allowed 11 hits and five runs with six strikeouts and a walk.
MacKenzie Gore (5-12) had 10 strikeouts and pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since July 9. Cole Henry, PJ Poulin and Clayton Beeter each retired three batters to complete the three-hit shutout.
Abrams started Washington's offensive onslaught in the second inning with a two-out home run off Verlander that hit the foul pole in right. That came three pitches after Wood doubled in a pair of runs.
Wood also connected for a two-run double off Spencer Bivens in the seventh.
Key moment
The Nationals seized the momentum with three consecutive hits with two outs that led to four runs in the second inning.
Key stat
Three of the hits allowed by Verlander had an exit velocity of 103.9 mph or faster.

Justin Fields Assessment Should Fire Up NY Giants Fans

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Jets are hoping to hit on their recent quarterback acquisition, Justin Fields. After spending time with Aaron Rodgers under center, the Jets mutually split with the veteran quarterback this offseason. Fields enters the picture and both teams are hoping for a positive fresh start. A reporter asked New York Giants pass rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux how it's going for Fields in a Jets uniform from his perspective. The veteran didn't hold back, claiming that Fields was doing a lot more running than throwing. via @PLeonardNYDN: #Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was asked for his evaluation of Justin Fields as a QB after 2 days of practices against the #Jets. Thibodeaux says he honestly can't give one because Fields had to spend so much time running and scrambling away from the Giants' pass rush. #Giants edge rusher Kayvon Thibodeaux was asked for his evaluation of Justin Fields as a QB after 2 days of practices against the #Jets. Thibodeaux says he honestly can't give one because Fields had to spend so much time running and scrambling away from the Giants' pass rush — Pat Leonard (@PLeonardNYDN) August 14, 2025 Is this a shot at Fields for not being able to read the coverage and settle in to get his throws off? Or is it Thibodeaux simply pointing out that the Giants' pass rush has been so dominant that they haven't given Fields a chance to get comfortable in the pocket? If it's the latter, Giants fans should feel fired up. All offseason long, the Giants' pass rush has been one of the brightest spots when it comes players or reporters assessing the team. This week, the Giants have been able to put their rush to the test in practice against the other New York-based organization, and it seems to be going well for Big Blue. Justin Fields #7 of the New York Jets practices during training camp at Atlantic Health Jets Training Center on July 28, 2025 in Florham Park, New is heading into year four. He played in just 12 games last season, which amounted to 28 tackles, eight for a loss, and 5.5 sacks. That's a down year compared to his 50 tackles, 12 for a loss, and 11.5 sacks in 2023, when he played 17 games for the first and only time this year. With the Giants adding another dominant pass rusher to the picture in Abdul Carter, that should only make it more difficult for offensive lines to place their attention on everybody, including Thibodeaux. There might be more cooks in the kitchen, but that should put more food on Thibodeaux's plate. After a week of joint practices with the Jets, the Giants will take the field at MetLife Stadium for the first time this preseason on Saturday. Giants fans are unlikely to get a long look at their full pass rush—if any at all. Meanwhile, Fields could suit up and continue working on learning his new system in New York. The veteran quarterback is on his third team since getting drafted 11th overall in 2021. Fields spent his first three seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. Last year, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he started in six of the 10 games he appeared in. Back in March, Fields signed a two-year deal with the Jets. He's expected to be the team's full-time starter this year. With 44 starts under his belt, Fields holds a 14-30 record. He has thrown for 7,780 yards, 45 touchdowns, and 31 interceptions. Basketball great Sue Bird to be honored

This story was originally published on Final preparations are being made to honor one of professional basketball's — and Seattle's — finest. A video posted on X by the WNBA Seattle Storm shows Sue Bird checking out a statue made in her likeness. The Storm said the team is the first in the WNBA to dedicate a statue to a former player. 'Looks great,' Bird says, as she talks with sculptor Julie Rotblatt-Amrany. The video does not actually show the statue, which is expected to be revealed during a 10 a.m. news conference outside Climate Pledge Arena on Sunday, August 17. According to a previously released statement, the WNBA Storm said a free community fan fest will start at noon, followed by a 'Forever Sue' game at 3 p.m. The Storm are set to play the Phoenix Mercury. 'I'm thankful to the Storm and Seattle for this honor, and can't wait to celebrate with my family, friends, and our amazing fans,' Bird said. Sue Bird's basketball career Bird played her entire career of 21 seasons in Seattle. The stellar point guard won four WNBA Championships, is a five-time Olympic gold medalist, and was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame earlier this year. Bird is now a member of the Seattle Storm ownership team. 'Her leadership transcended basketball,' Seattle Storm President and CEO Alisha Valavanis said. 'We celebrate not just Sue's illustrious career, but the future she helped pave for the next generation of athletes.' Mayor Bruce Harrell described Bird as a 'transformative figure' in Seattle's history and a 'symbol of what it means to lead with purpose, courage, and heart.' Dan Quinn singles out these two Commanders' offensive linemen

An offensive line has to work together so much. There is timing, knowledge, and communication that are all needed. Washington Commanders right guard Sam Cosmi has not yet been able to work back with the first-team unit, as he recovers from a torn ACL in the playoff win at Detroit in January. But also, left guard Brandon Coleman has been missing time. The second-year player out of TCU started most of 2024 at left tackle, and this year is being asked to transition inside to left guard. Last season, during training camp, he injured a pectoral muscle that set him back a couple of weeks. Later, during the regular season, Coleman suffered a nagging injury to his knee that slowed him some, but he was able to continue in the starting lineup. Two weeks ago, during a Saturday practice, Coleman limped off the field with an apparent foot injury. He has missed time, yet head coach Dan Quinn has said he does not believe Coleman's injury is severe. Quinn was asked if he was concerned Coleman had missed valuable reps with Laremy Tunsil, the new left tackle on the Commanders' line. "Yes, you always want that to happen (reps together as a unit) 100 percent, no doubt about it," Quinn said. "It was nice to see him participating today in our early morning walk-through. So, to see him getting closer, I'm pleased about that because no one wants anyone to miss. I know it happens, and I try to think about the things I can control and not worry about the things I can't control. We just try to do the best we can in that space." Quinn then offered that Nick Allegretti, filling in for Cosmi at right guard, has a great attitude and is thus a leader on the offensive line and also on the team. Quinn assured the press that Allegretti has always been that way, displaying a willingness to move and play wherever he is needed on the line to help the team.
