Nationals beat Giants 8-0, spoil Justin Verlander's 3,500th career strikeout
Josh Bell and Paul DeJong had three hits apiece to highlight a 17-hit day for Washington. James Wood had a pair of two-run doubles as the Nationals won a series at Oracle Park for the fourth straight season.
Verlander (1-9), the three-time Cy Young Award winner who has struggled in his first season with the Giants, struck out the side in the first inning and became the 10th pitcher in MLB history with 3,500 strikeouts.
The milestone mark was the lone bright spot for the 42-year-old Verlander, who was unbeaten in five career starts against the Nationals before Sunday. He allowed 11 hits and five runs with six strikeouts and a walk.
MacKenzie Gore (5-12) had 10 strikeouts and pitched six scoreless innings for his first win since July 9. Cole Henry, PJ Poulin and Clayton Beeter each retired three batters to complete the three-hit shutout.
Abrams started Washington's offensive onslaught in the second inning with a two-out home run off Verlander that hit the foul pole in right. That came three pitches after Wood doubled in a pair of runs.
Wood also connected for a two-run double off Spencer Bivens in the seventh.

A video posted on X by the WNBA Seattle Storm shows Sue Bird checking out a statue made in her likeness. The Storm said the team is the first in the WNBA to dedicate a statue to a former player. Dan Quinn singles out these two Commanders' offensive linemen
An offensive line has to work together so much. There is timing, knowledge, and communication that are all needed. Washington Commanders right guard Sam Cosmi has not yet been able to work back with the first-team unit, as he recovers from a torn ACL in the playoff win at Detroit in January. But also, left guard Brandon Coleman has been missing time. The second-year player out of TCU started most of 2024 at left tackle, and this year is being asked to transition inside to left guard. Last season, during training camp, he injured a pectoral muscle that set him back a couple of weeks. Later, during the regular season, Coleman suffered a nagging injury to his knee that slowed him some, but he was able to continue in the starting lineup. Two weeks ago, during a Saturday practice, Coleman limped off the field with an apparent foot injury. He has missed time, yet head coach Dan Quinn has said he does not believe Coleman's injury is severe. Quinn was asked if he was concerned Coleman had missed valuable reps with Laremy Tunsil, the new left tackle on the Commanders' line. "Yes, you always want that to happen (reps together as a unit) 100 percent, no doubt about it," Quinn said. "It was nice to see him participating today in our early morning walk-through. So, to see him getting closer, I'm pleased about that because no one wants anyone to miss. I know it happens, and I try to think about the things I can control and not worry about the things I can't control. We just try to do the best we can in that space." Quinn then offered that Nick Allegretti, filling in for Cosmi at right guard, has a great attitude and is thus a leader on the offensive line and also on the team. Quinn assured the press that Allegretti has always been that way, displaying a willingness to move and play wherever he is needed on the line to help the team.
