CM says love jihad cases in Goa, state needs anti-conversion law

Time of India2 days ago
Porvorim:
Chief minister Pramod Sawant on Monday said in the assembly that it is time Goa also brought in anti-conversion laws like Uttar Pradesh to curb cases of 'love jihad'.
Sawant said many cases of love jihad were reported earlier in Goa too and he will release the numbers soon.
His statement was, however, opposed by Goa Forward Party's Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai, who said the CM is trying to push his party's national agenda in Goa.
'We need to bring in the anti-conversion law and all of you from Congress need to support it. Love jihad cases came to light in Goa too earlier. When we spoke about it, at that time you all said there is no such thing as love jihad. There are cases in Goa, I will put up the figures soon,' said Sawant.
The CM's remarks came after the opposition criticised govt for Goa police being unable to track the movements of alleged accused Ayesha, who was recently arrested by Uttar Pradesh police in an anti-conversion case.
'There are no cases of love jihad in Goa. He should give the number of such cases. We are diverting from the issue of a transnational network which also saw activities from Goa. No Goans live in Aldeia de Goa (gated complex where accused Ayesha's parents rented a flat) and nobody knows what the residents there are up to,' said Sardesai.
Sawant said that the anti-conversion law is only against forcefully done conversions and will not in any way interfere with willing inter-religious marriages. 'But conversion should not take place by offering lures like money, etc,' said the CM.

140 kilometres, 22 hours, a familiar destination – VS Achuthanandan's last journey

The mortal remains of former Kerala chief minister and veteran CPI(M) leader V S Achuthanandan, who died Monday at the age of 101, will be consigned to flames at Valiyachudukadu burial ground in Alappuzha on Wednesday evening. The body of VS, which was taken by road in a flower-decorated low-floor bus from the state capital on Tuesday afternoon, reached Alappuzha on Wednesday morning. It took 22 hours to cover a 140 km distance as a sea of humanity waited along the entire route to pay tribute to the Communist leader. Although the cortege was scheduled to reach his house in Punnapra, Alappuzha, on Tuesday at 9 pm, the warmth of the people delayed the final journey. Those who had gathered showered flower petals in front of the bus carrying the body and raised slogans calling VS immortal. Many who came from far-flung regions waited for hours to give a final red salute to the leader, who lived for the ordinary people and their issues. When the cortege reached Harippad in Alappuzha, local legislator and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala was waiting to pay homage. 'When the final journey of VS is passing through Harippad, I have to be here,' he said. After reaching Alappuzha, the body was taken to his Velikkakathu house at Punnapra, where senior party leaders, including CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby, state secretary M V Govindan and Indian Union Muslim League president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, were present. Later, in the afternoon, the body was taken to the Alappuzha district committee office of the CPI(M), which VS had turned into his second home during his early years of political life in the undivided Communist Party. The burial ground, which is close to communist hearts, is the resting place of hundreds of martyrs of the 1946 Punnapra-Vayalar uprising and several early leaders of the Communist movement such as T V Thomas, K R Gouriyamma, P T Punoose, R Sugathan and P K Chandranadan. The uprising, in which hundreds were martyred, had been a defining moment in the making of the organiser in VS. He was in charge of a camp to make sharpened lances out of arecanut tree planks to use against the weapons of the police force. Every year, VS used to pay tributes to the martyrs on the commemoration of the event in October. The last time he visited Valiyachudukadu was in October 2019, before he was bedridden following a stroke.

Elections being 'stolen'; will show it in 'black and white' to EC with Karnataka example: Rahul Gandhi

As demands for discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar have brought the Parliament to a standstill, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said that the Congress has figured out how "votes are being stolen" in India. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament House complex after the Lok Sabha proceedings were adjourned for a third consecutive day amid opposition protests over Bihar SIR among other issues, Gandhi asserted that he would put before the people and the Election Commission in "black in white" how the "theft of votes" is being done. Gandhi highlighted the recent revelation by the EC that during house-to-house visits in the ongoing SIR of electoral roll in Bihar, poll officials have so far found more than 52 lakh voters were not present at their addresses and another 18 lakh have died. "It is not just about 52 lakhs. It is not just about Bihar, they cheated in Maharashtra. We have asked questions of the Election Commission, asked them to show us the voters list; they did not show us the voters list, we asked for videography, they changed the law. One crore new voters had come in Maharashtra, and the election was stolen," he said. "In Karnataka, we have found out 'bhayankar chori (massive theft)'. I will show it in black and white to you and the Election Commission. I will show in black and white how the 'chori' is done and from where. We have it in black and white in Karnataka," the former Congress president said.

Trump claimed truce credit 25 times, but PM Modi is still silent: Rahul Gandhi

Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday went all-out in a fresh attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, questioning his silence over US President Donald Trump's repeated claims about brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He also slammed the large-scale voter roll revision in Bihar that rocked the first three days of the Monsoon Session, and alleged a broader pattern of electoral fraud by the BJP in multiple said that Trump has made the claim "25 times", yet the Indian Prime Minister has remained silent, triggering serious questions about the government's narrative."Trump has said 25 times that he got the ceasefire done. Who is Trump to get a ceasefire done? It's not his job. But the Prime Minister has not given a reply even once. That is the truth, and he cannot hide from it," Gandhi told reporters at Parliament. Mocking the government's portrayal of Operation Sindoor as a success, Gandhi pointed out the apparent contradictions in the official messaging."On one hand you say Operation Sindoor is ongoing, and on the other, you say victory has been achieved. Either it's ongoing, or it's over. Trump is saying he halted Sindoor. So 'kuch toh daal mein kala hai na'," he said, using a popular Hindi idiom implying something is Congress MP also questioned India's foreign policy standing post-Operation Sindoor, alleging that no country had supported India diplomatically."They have destroyed our foreign policy. No one supported us," he said, accusing the government of isolating India on the global Gandhi further suggested that Prime Minister Modi is avoiding Parliament precisely because of Trump's claim. "How can the Prime Minister give a statement? What will he say - that Trump got the ceasefire done? He can't say that. But that's the truth, and the whole world knows it," Gandhi the Election Commission flagging 52 lakh missing voters in Bihar, Gandhi repeated his earlier claim of the BJP having manipulated electoral rolls to emerge victorious in the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections. "It is not just about those 52 lakh people. They have cheated in Maharashtra (Assembly elections). We asked the ECI to show the voter's list, but they refused. We asked them to show videography, but they changed the rules of videography. 1 crore new voters were added in Maharashtra. In Karnataka, we have caught a huge theft. I will show it to the Election Commission in black and white on how theft is done. They have understood that we are aware of their game now. Now, what they are doing is that they have deleted the voters, and a new voter list will be brought," he said. TRUMP REPEATS CEASEFIRE CLAIMadvertisementThe Congress party echoed Gandhi's sentiments, with senior leader Jairam Ramesh accusing Modi of refusing to engage on critical matters."As Trump hits the silver jubilee mark with his ceasefire claim, the Prime Minister remains totally quiet - only finding time to travel abroad and destabilise democratic institutions at home," Ramesh said in a sharp post on speaking again on Wednesday at a gathering in New York, reiterated his earlier assertion that he had prevented a major war between India and Pakistan."I stopped it. Five planes were shot down. It was going to be a big problem. I'm the one who called them and said: Stop," Trump however, has consistently maintained that the ceasefire understanding with Pakistan was reached after direct military-to-military communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs), initiated at Pakistan's request. During a call with Trump last month, Prime Minister Modi made it clear that India "does not and will never accept mediation". Operation Sindoor, launched on May 7, was India's military response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 civilians dead. The operation involved high-precision drone and missile strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The two countries reached a ceasefire agreement on May 10 after days of intense cross-border escalation.- EndsMust Watch
