140 kilometres, 22 hours, a familiar destination – VS Achuthanandan's last journey
The body of VS, which was taken by road in a flower-decorated low-floor bus from the state capital on Tuesday afternoon, reached Alappuzha on Wednesday morning. It took 22 hours to cover a 140 km distance as a sea of humanity waited along the entire route to pay tribute to the Communist leader.
Although the cortege was scheduled to reach his house in Punnapra, Alappuzha, on Tuesday at 9 pm, the warmth of the people delayed the final journey. Those who had gathered showered flower petals in front of the bus carrying the body and raised slogans calling VS immortal. Many who came from far-flung regions waited for hours to give a final red salute to the leader, who lived for the ordinary people and their issues.
When the cortege reached Harippad in Alappuzha, local legislator and senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala was waiting to pay homage. 'When the final journey of VS is passing through Harippad, I have to be here,' he said.
After reaching Alappuzha, the body was taken to his Velikkakathu house at Punnapra, where senior party leaders, including CPI(M) general secretary M A Baby, state secretary M V Govindan and Indian Union Muslim League president Panakkad Sadiq Ali Shihab Thangal, were present.
Later, in the afternoon, the body was taken to the Alappuzha district committee office of the CPI(M), which VS had turned into his second home during his early years of political life in the undivided Communist Party.
The burial ground, which is close to communist hearts, is the resting place of hundreds of martyrs of the 1946 Punnapra-Vayalar uprising and several early leaders of the Communist movement such as T V Thomas, K R Gouriyamma, P T Punoose, R Sugathan and P K Chandranadan.
The uprising, in which hundreds were martyred, had been a defining moment in the making of the organiser in VS. He was in charge of a camp to make sharpened lances out of arecanut tree planks to use against the weapons of the police force.
Every year, VS used to pay tributes to the martyrs on the commemoration of the event in October. The last time he visited Valiyachudukadu was in October 2019, before he was bedridden following a stroke.

Revanth Reddy bats for Bandaru Dattatreya, a Telugu OBC, for vice president post
Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Wednesday demanded former Union Minister and ex-Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, an OBC leader from Telangana, be made the Vice President of India. He said the post should be given to Telangana as Telugu was the second-most spoken language in the country, and justice to the native speakers must be done. Meanwhile, he termed as 'unfortunate' the resignation of former vice president Jagdeep Dhankhar. 'The next Vice President should be from Telangana. Telangana deserves its due. You cannot do so much injustice to the people of Telangana. Telugu is the second most spoken language in India after Hindi, and then comes Bengali. Injustice has been done to our people. 'I have demanded that the NDA government appoint Bandaru Dattatreya as the next Vice President of India. If Dattatreya is made the vice president, then some of your sins will be forgiven,' the Congress leader told reporters. Dattatreya was the Haryana governor during 2019-2021. He was made the governor of Himachal Pradesh in July 2021 and vacated that post on July 21 this year. Reddy said he proposed Dattatreya's name because there is so much talk about OBCs these days, and Dattatreya, an OBC, was removed from the post of governor. He said Bandi Sanjay was also axed as the BJP president of Telangana, as he termed both these leaders the main face of Telugu OBCs. 'They sent a person of Telugu-speaking person back home from Delhi (referring to former VP M Venkaiah Naidu). Then they removed Bandaru Dattatreya as governor and then removed Bandi Sanjay as Telangana BJP president,' said Reddy, attacking the BJP-led Centre. Asked if the Congress would support Dattatreya's candidature, he said, 'I will try and help Bandaru Dattatreya and I will also request my leadership to support him too, but the Congress leadership will take a call on it.' Reddy also alleged that the country is in danger till the NDA government is in power, and it has to be removed.

Brave Comrade VS: Kerala bids farewell to Achuthanandan at Valiya Chudukadu
Alappuzha (Kerala), Jul 23 (PTI) The mortal remains of former Kerala Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan were consigned to flames on Wednesday at Valiya Chudukadu — the final resting place that holds the memories of the Communist Party and the ashes of those martyred in the 1946 Punnapra-Vayalar uprising in this coastal district. With the police and red volunteers giving the final salute and flames engulfing the veteran's body, an overwhelmed crowd chanted in unison, 'Brave Comrade VS, you live on through us,' their voices echoing across the soil that witnessed the uprising which helped shape the rise of the Communist movement in the state. Valiya Chudukadu is also the resting place of Communist leaders such as the legendary P Krishna Pillai and others who were part of the uprising and the movement that followed. His body was cremated with full state honours, with the police rendering a gun salute and sounding a bugle. Later, his face was covered with a red flag. Amidst slogans being raised by party workers, his son V A Arun Kumar lit the pyre at 9:16 pm. And thus, Achuthanandan — one of the most popular Chief Ministers of the state — has become part of history. The stalwart, one of India's most respected Communist figures, died on Monday, drawing the curtain on a fierce, eight-decade-long struggle for the proletariat that the southern state had witnessed. The 22-hour-long final procession from the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram, which began on Tuesday and ended in his hometown Alappuzha, stood as proof of the deep emotional and ideological bond the 101-year-old shared with the working class of Kerala. The journey of around 150 kilometres, which normally takes just over four hours, was significantly delayed due to the massive turnout of ordinary people and staunch admirers of Achuthanandan, who lined the waysides to catch a final glimpse of him. The sheer size of the crowd that flooded the roads was striking, especially for a leader who had remained silent and absent from public life for more than five years. It showed that, even though Comrade VS was no longer active in public life, his tireless struggles, agitations, and unwavering stands for the poor, the marginalised, women, and the underprivileged remained deeply etched in the minds of the people of Kerala — cutting across political lines. While many people expressed satisfaction that they were at least able to catch a glimpse of their beloved leader after waiting for hours in the rain, others broke down in tears, having missed the chance due to the heavy crowds. 'I was waiting here for so long… but I couldn't see my Comrade one last time. I couldn't get through the crowd and reach the bus," said an elderly woman, crying aloud in dismay. In another part of Alappuzha, a group of Congress workers were seen raising thundering slogans in honour of Achuthanandan. When asked, they said there was no politics or prejudice involved in Comrade VS's case — he was a true Communist who lived and died as one, and every slogan they raised was a token of their respect. In Haripad, in the district, senior Congress leader Ramesh Chennithala also paid his last respects to the veteran before the procession moved on to his ancestral home, Velikkakath. When his mortal remains were brought to his home, the crowd hailed him as the 'beloved son of Punnapra" and paid their final respects. Ministers Saji Cheriyan and P Prasad, along with other party workers, coordinated the arrangements for the public homage at the house. From senior leaders of various political parties to local workers in the area, thousands of people converged at the house to see their 'revolutionary sun" one last time. Later, the veteran's body was taken to the party's district committee office in Alappuzha, which is named after Krishna Pillai — the revolutionary leader, who handpicked and mentored Achuthanandan in the Communist movement. Senior party leaders, including Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and party veteran S Ramachandra Pillai, had been present since morning at the district committee office but the massive crowd lining the roads threw all prior plans into disarray. When the mortal remains were brought to the recreation ground for the scheduled public homage, the flow of mourners and their emotions became uncontrollable. Even as the rain lashed down and trains thundered by in the distance, the Alappuzha Recreation Ground echoed on Wednesday with chants saluting Achuthanandan. Undeterred by the relentless downpour, people kept arriving in waves, turning the coastal town into a sea of memories and slogans. The crowd surged towards the Alappuzha coast to catch a final glimpse of Achuthanandan. His funeral procession reached the Recreation Ground around 6 pm, where police officials draped the national flag over his body and presented a guard of honour. Leaders from various political, social, and cultural spheres paid their last respects. Arrangements were made for the public to pay homage in four lines, and even after waiting for more than eight hours, people from across Kerala stood patiently to see him one last time. Later, as heavy rain continued to pour, Achuthanandan's body was taken to Valiya Chudukadu, the resting place of many Communist leaders and martyrs. Thousands braved the weather to follow the final journey of the veteran leader. Next Vice President? Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Picks THIS OBC Leader From BJP
HYDERABAD: Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Wednesday accused the BJP of stalling 42 per cent reservation for Backward Classes (BCs) by using Muslim community as an excuse. He alleged that the leaders of saffron party were playing politics of sentiment by stating that they would back 42 percent quota for BCs if Muslims are removed from the list of BCs. Addressing a press conference in Delhi, he clarified that Muslims are being extended the benefits of reservation on the basis of their backwardness. He dared BJP to scrap reservation for Muslims in the states ruled by it or its allies. He asked why the BJP was not scrapping Muslim quota in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. He alleged that BJP is adopting double standards on the issue of Muslim reservation and trying to derive political mileage by whipping up passions. 'You can't have one justice for Telangana and another justice for other states,' he remarked. He warned that if BJP oppose Backward Class reservation, the party will be wiped out from Telangana. Revanth Reddy along with some state ministers and Congress leaders arrived in the national capital to mobilise support of various parties for including two state laws for 42 per cent Backward Class reservation in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution. The Chief Minister recalled that the state legislature passed two Bills for 42 per cent quota for BCs in education, employment and public life and sent the same to the Centre for including in the 9th Schedule. Revanth Reddy also pointed out that the local body elections have to be conducted in the state by September as per the direction of the High Court. 'If 42 percent seats in local bodies are to be reserved for the BCs, the Centre will have to give its approval,' he said. The Chief Minister said there was no justification in the argument that total reservations should not cross 50 per cent. He claimed that the Centre crossed this limit long back with 10 per cent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). The Chief Minister also demanded that a leader from Telangana should be made the Vice-President of India. Revanth Reddy said Bandaru Dattatreya, whose tenure as Haryana Governor has just ended, should be made Vice-President. He alleged that since Dattatreya is an OBC leader he was sidelined to make G. Kishan Reddy the union minister. He said similarly Bandi Sanjay was removed as state BJP president and a Brahmin was recently appointed as the state BJP chief.
