Bangladeshi man arrested after fatal knife and acid attack on Eid in Makkah
A Bangladeshi national has been arrested in Makkah Province for allegedly attacking his wife with a knife and acid on Eidul Fitr, which resulted in her death and the death of another woman, with several others injured, Saudi authorities confirmed.
Makkah Region Police reported that the assault took place as the woman was stepping off a company bus operated by a maintenance firm. The incident is believed to be related to a domestic dispute.
The suspect reportedly tried to take his own life by pouring acid on himself but was apprehended at the scene. Legal proceedings are now underway.

Blacklisted firm declared eligible for NGC tender
The National Grid Company (NGC) has declared a blacklisted firm eligible to participate in a tender for a 135-kilometre transmission line project. According to details, NGC issued a tender for laying a 135-km transmission line. Four companies were declared eligible after a technical evaluation. A company previously blacklisted by the Asian Development Bank for indulging in fraudulent practice and furnishing fake documents was also declared eligible after the technical evaluation. Interestingly, a blacklisted firm cannot be declared eligible for participating in any tender. In a letter sent to NGC managing director, a Saudi investment company said the firm came to Pakistan for making investment over the invitation of the government but the blacklisted company was declared eligible, which amounts to irregularity. The incident raised the question mark on the transparency in the NGC tender process. The Saudi company demanded that investigation be conducted into the matter for restoring the confidence of foreign investors. Sources said some NGC officials are changing rules to declare the blacklisted company eligible. When Express News contacted NTDC MD Engineer Shahid Nazeer over the matter, he said the letter of Saudi company was forwarded to procurement and contract management department.

Bangladesh says India pushes back 1,200 people
DHAKA: Bangladesh said Wednesday that neighbouring India has pushed more than 1,270 people across its border in the past month, mainly Bangladeshis, but also Indian citizens and Rohingya refugees. Bangladesh, largely encircled by land by India, has seen relations with New Delhi turn icy since a mass uprising toppled Dhaka's previous government last year. 'Between May 7 and June 3, Indian authorities pushed in 1,272 individuals, including a few Indian citizens and Rohingya, through 19 bordering districts', Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) officials said. 'Only yesterday, they pushed 50 individuals.' India's Hindu nationalist government has often described undocumented immigrants as 'Muslim infiltrators', accusing them of posing a security threat. Bangladeshi Jahidul Molla, 21, said he was among those sent back, saying he had been living in India's western state of Gujarat since he was 14. 'For the next three days, they kept beating us, and we were starving', reporting that they were then dropped overboard in the mangrove swamps of the Sundarbans, which straddle the border between the nations. 'They dropped us… the coast guard rescued us and handed us over to the police'. AFP could not independently verify his account. India shares a long and porous border with neighbouring Muslim-majority Bangladesh. The mostly Muslim Rohingya have been persecuted in Myanmar for decades, with many fleeing a 2017 military crackdown. More than a million escaped to Bangladesh, but others fled to India. The BGB official said 'some of the Rohingya' were registered with the UN refugee agency in India. Md Touhid Hossain, who heads the foreign ministry in the caretaker government, said Dhaka was 'putting all our efforts' into resolving the issue through dialogue. Indian media report that, since a four-day conflict with Pakistan last month, authorities have pushed back more than 2,000 alleged illegal Bangladeshi immigrants. In February, Amit Shah, India's interior minister said 'the issue of illegal intruders is also related to national security, and it should be dealt with strictly', adding that 'they should be identified and deported'.

Two witnesses record testimonies in gifts case

PHOTO: FILE Two more prosecution witnesses on Tuesday gave their testimonies in a case related to alleged misuse of the official gift repository rules by PTI founder Imran Khan and his spouse Bushra Bibi during the former's term as the prime minister. Special Judge Central Shahrukh Arjumand conducted the hearing of the case in a courtroom inside Rawalpindi's Central Prison popularly known as Adiala Jail. Both Imran and Bushrawho are detained in the prison facility — attended the hearing. After the testimonies, the counsel for Imran, Arshad Tabriz, cross-examined both the witnesses. Lawyer of Bushra Bibi, Qosain Faisal Mufti, will cross examine the witnesses at the next hearing. Bushra Bibi had refused to attend the last hearing of the case — also called the Toshakhana II casedespite repeated summonses by the court. The judge had later warned of cancelling her bail in the case. The court will resume hearing on June 11. According to the charge-sheet, Imran misused his position to acquire a Bulgari jewelry set that the Saudi crown prince presented as a gift during the couple's visit to Saudi Arabia between May 7 and 10, 2021. The set included a ring, bracelet, necklace, and a pair of earrings. According to the evidence gathered during the investigation, Imran and Bushra unlawfully retained the set. On May 18, 2021, the deputy military secretary informed the section officer of Toshakhana about the need to assess and declare the price of the gift, but it was not deposited. Bulgari sold the necklace for 300,000 euros and the earrings for 80,000 euros to a Saudi franchise on May 25, 2018. However, the price of the bracelet and ring could not be determined. As of May 28, 2021, the total estimated value of the Bulgari jewelry set was approximately Rs75,661,600. The necklace alone was valued at Rs56,496,000, and the earrings at Rs15,065,600.
