Mainieri struggling as LSU visits South Carolina
But the first-year South Carolina coach is still excited to have LSU visiting his Gamecocks for three games this weekend to finish the regular season.
Mainieri stepped down at LSU following the 2021 season, suffering from persistent neck pain.
The coaching break was the perfect remedy. No games, no pain —and, suddenly, a lot more golf.
The pain was replaced by a sudden itch to coach again and he insists he's happy to be back in coaching, back in the unforgiving Southeastern Conference. But, frankly, at the moment his new program is a hot mess.
The Gamecocks (27-26, 5-22 SEC) had to rally with five runs in the bottom of the eighth Tuesday for a 6-5 win over Winthrop just to creep above the .500 mark overall.
But the SEC's minefield has been, figuratively at least, another pain in the neck.
The Gamecocks have lost seven in a row in conference, including last weekend when they gave up 46 runs in three losses at Auburn.
They enter the weekend in 15th place in the conference, ahead of only 3-24 Missouri.
'I had just underestimated the strength of the conference, how much better the conference has gotten in the last couple of years,' Mainieri said two weeks ago after a series loss to Kentucky. 'The players are so much bigger and stronger and more experienced. We just have not been able to match up in some cases.'
That remark raised the ire of some Columbia pod casts and on talk radio. There was even speculation that Mainieri — whether by his own volition or getting pushed out the door— might be a one-and-done experiment at South Carolina.
It was news to Mainieri.
'I'm the coach at South Carolina and no one has told me anything different,' he said recently. 'I'm totally committed to being here and I want to see this thing get on the tracks in the right way.
'I've been through this before. My first year at LSU (2007) was difficult.'
He turned the Tigers around with a College World Series trip his second year and the next season won the 2009 national championship. In all, he made five Omaha trips with LSU, also reaching the CWS finals in 2017.
There were also four SEC championships and six conference tournament titles.
'I'm very proud of my time at LSU,' said Mainieri, who has very little to prove as he's already in the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame.
He's taking over another proud program now, one where the athletic director who hired him, Ray Tanner, was the USC head coach for College World Series championships in 2010 and 2011.
The Gamecocks' back-to-back national titles straddled the last year the CWS was held in Omaha's old Rosenblatt Stadium and the first year it moved downtown.
Tanner, a good friend, surprisingly retired from South Carolina in September, but Mainieri remains optimistic about his move.
'That can happen here,' Mainieri said on Tiger Rag radio of his success at LSU. 'It may not happen at quickly as it did at LSU, but we're working really hard. And I'm staying.'
Only a handful of current Tigers were around when Mainieri coached his last season at LSU in 2021.
But he was no stranger around the program over the previous three years since his retirement.
'If anybody has earned the right to do what they want to do and continue to coach, it's him,' said LSU coach Jay Johnson. 'It will be good to see him, and we're looking forward to the games.'
The No. 1-ranked Tigers (40-12, 17-10) are trying to lock up one of the top eight super seeds for the NCAA tournament.
They enter the weekend third in the SEC, a game behind Arkansas and three games behind first-place Texas.

To be recognized as the top player in the country in my class is not only an honor but a testament to all the work that's been put in so far," Marcus Jr. said via ESPN. "Much more work to do but honored to be in this spot. The work is all that matters." It goes without saying, Marcus Jr. will have plenty of collegiate options. According to the national recruiting site 247Sports, Marcus Jr. already has 12 offers, including from Kentucky, Houston and, of course, LSU. No word if Marcus Sr. will encourage his son to follow in his parent's footsteps and become a Tiger, but it's safe to say Marcus Sr. will carve out time from his busy schedule as an NFL analyst to watch his son ball out. Jets' rookie tight end could play a major role
The Jets used their second-round selection of this past draft on tight end Mason Taylor out of LSU. And while he is just a rookie looking to cement his name in the league, he could play a major role for this Jets team. Mason Taylor has succeeded as a pass catcher before At LSU, Taylor broke records and was an absolute stud at the tight end position. He seemed to always be open, and the Tigers used him heavily as a receiver. In his final collegiate season, the Jets' tight end put up 546 yards and two touchdowns on 55 receptions. He is seen as the most productive tight end ever at LSU. The Jets will need Taylor this upcoming season, as behind him at the tight end position, they do not have a lot of depth. He is clearly their top guy and will provide big relief for the Jets' offense. Jets need a safety blanket for Justin Fields The Jets do not have many big targets for their offense this season, so having a safety net on in the passing game will be important. This is what Taylor can bring to the field. The Jets can run different play actions and different standard passes, all while having Taylor run some form of block and releases, giving new QB Justin Fields a guy to whom he could check down if nothing is open. He is working to become a complete tight end, so once he develops his run blocking more, the play-action game could open up. Taylor can be a big threat in the passing game, and they will use him in many ways other than just as a safety blanket. This season, we might see a breakout right away for the Jets' tight end. He has been having a strong camp and could bring that to the game on Sundays. College football season kicks off with thrilling matchups and high stakes
After a long and busy season for college athletics, the football season arrives with a host of tantalizing angles. A look at some of the big games among the top teams, what's at stake and the hurdles that must be cleared on the way to the national championship. When does college football start? A handful of games kick off the season Aug. 23, with the most intriguing a Big 12 matchup between No. 22 Iowa State and No. 17 Kansas State that will take place in Dublin, Ireland. Both teams are considered contenders in their wide-open conference. Kansas State quarterback Avery Johnson threw for a school-record 25 touchdowns last season and ran for seven more. Iowa State played in the conference title game last year. The following weekend has some doozies: No. 9 LSU faces No. 4 Clemson, No. 6 Notre Dame visits No. 10 Miami and defending champion No. 3 Ohio State hosts No. 1 Texas. Before the College Football Playoff expanded to 12 teams last year, a game like that might have been make or break. Now, teams have second chances and can afford three (maybe four) losses and still get in. Who are the favorites? The AP Top 25 and the coaches poll both list Texas as the preseason No. 1 team and the Longhorns are currently the favorite (plus-450, or 9-2 odds) to win the national championship, according to BetMGM Sportsbook. Ohio State is right behind them (plus-525), followed by No. 5 Georgia and No. 2 Penn State (both 7-1) and then Clemson and No. 7 Oregon (both 9-1). The quarterfinals will be at the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 1, then at the Orange, Rose and Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1. The semifinals will be Jan. 8 at the Fiesta Bowl and Jan. 9 at the Peach Bowl. The title game will take place at Hard Rock Stadium outside of Miami on Jan. 19.
