Surprise! Shohei Ohtani strikes out against Athletics' position player
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Shohei Ohtani had quite a game on his bobblehead night. Two home runs, six runs.
Then Jhonny Pereda struck him out.
The Athletics' backup catcher faced Ohtani in the eighth inning Thursday night.
Pereda gave up three straight hits against the bottom of the Dodgers' order. With Los Angeles leading 17-2, Ohtani came up with a chance to pile on.
Pereda's first four pitches to the Japanese superstar were between 62 and 68 mph. Ohtani took a called first strike and later fouled off another pitch.
Then Perada threw an 89-mph fastball.
Ohtani's foul tip was caught and one of the major leagues' homer leaders went down swinging.
'He struck out against a position player, how about that?' Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Perada kept the ball as a souvenir.
Miguel Rojas came up next and used Ohtani's bat to get a RBI single.

Ohtani has homered on three of his four bobblehead nights as a Dodger. He hit a walk-off homer on his previous bobblehead night April 2.

Pete Alonso closing in on Mets home run record
DENVER (AP) — When he re-signed with the New York Mets last winter, Pete Alonso saw an opportunity to become the team's career leader in home runs and multihomer games. He checked one record off his list Sunday with a pair of two-run shots in a 13-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies — and the burly first baseman is closing in on the other. Alonso's 23rd multihomer game broke a tie with Darryl Strawberry for the most in Mets history. The four-time All-Star and two-time Home Run Derby champion now has 243 career homers, passing David Wright (242) for second place on the franchise list — nine behind Strawberry. 'Honestly, it's just one of those things where I can't really be too involved in it,' Alonso said. 'For me, I just want to win. Whatever happens, capitalize on certain pitches in the zone, then I'll get my chance to do so by helping my team win. That's always been the focus.' Alonso hit two of New York's season-high six homers to help complete a 5-2 trip. He has six home runs and two multihomer games in June after going deep just four times in 27 games in May. He went 5 for 14 during the weekend series and has raised his batting average from .288 to .301 over the last eight games. 'There's a lot to like about his bat right now,' manager Carlos Mendoza said. 'Just dominating pitches in the strike zone. That's who he is. Giants trade struggling 1B/OF LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash to Angels
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Angels acquired veteran first baseman and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. and cash from the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. The Angels will send cash or a player to be named to San Francisco for the 31-year-old Wade, who had been with the Giants since 2021. The team designated him for assignment last Wednesday. Los Angeles right-hander Michael Darrell-Hicks was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. Wade batted .167 with one homer and 15 RBIs for the Giants this season, his struggles culminating with a 2-for-17 performance on the team's most recent road trip. Wade hit a career-high .260 last season, and he gained a reputation in San Francisco for clutch late-game performances. The Angels currently have Nolan Schanuel at first base and six outfielders on their major league roster, but some have position flexibility.
