Tributes paid to man (81) killed in Kerry cycling accident
Tributes have been paid to an 'absolute gentleman' who was killed in a cycling accident in Co. Kerry on Tuesday.
The cyclist, who was a man in his eighties, died after he was struck by a vehicle in Kilgarvan at around 1.40pm on Tuesday. He has been named locally as Paddy O'Donoghue (81) from Gortahoonig, Muckross, Killarney, Kerry.
The incident happened on the R569 road, Church Grounds in Kilgarvan, gardai said. Mr O'Donoghue was declared dead at the scene. Gardaí say the Coroner has been informed and a postmortem examination will take place.
Locals described Mr O'Donoghue as an absolute gentleman who loved the outdoors and regularly cycled in the area.

He had often taken part in the Ring of Kerry Cycle each year.
Paying tribute his local Glenflesk GAA club said: 'Glenflesk GAA would like to offer our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Paddy O'Donoghue on his sad passing. He was a true Glenflesk stalwart as a player, mentor and lifelong supporter.'
Friends also paid tribute. One friend said: 'So sorry to hear of the sudden passing of Paddy, loved meeting him on my walks and we sorting out all the problems of the world, condolences to Brenda and family and all extended families. May he rest in peace.'
Another said: 'Paddy did me a big favour years ago after my car went off the road on the way to a game. He drove me and fixed the car and I hardly knew him. A gentleman. May he rest in peace.'
He is survived by his wife Brenda and children Florence, Áine, Denise, Brenda, Báirbre, Patrick and Alice. No funeral arrangements have been made as yet but should be known on Thursday June 12th.
Gardaíare appealing for witnesses to contact them. They also said in a statement that the road where the accident took place was closed off and diversions were in place.
They said: 'Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in the area between 1pm and 2pm are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardaí.
"Anyone with any information is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
Gardai say investigations are ongoing.

'We see this manifest in serious sexual assaults where, literally, it has to be explained to them what they did was wrong' Extreme online pornography is 'radicalising' some young men into normalising violence against women, Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has said. Mr Harris said in some cases gardaí have had to explain to perpetrators of violent sexual assaults why what they did was wrong. Mr Harris will step down as commissioner in September after seven years in the post. On Thursday, he addressed his final meeting of the Policing Authority. Speaking to the media afterwards he explained his concerns about the prevalence of online pornography. He said: 'I think the use of the expression hard-core is no longer relevant. 'The pornography which is readily accessible on the internet is extreme in the violence that it perpetrates, mostly against women. 'What happens then is that young men see this and this is a major influence on them in terms of what they think a sexual relationship is. 'We see this manifest in serious sexual assaults where, literally, it has to be explained to them what they did was wrong. 'Because seeing this violent behaviour has become so normalised.' He added: 'There is a trend in the violent behaviour of the offending which you can relate back to the imagery which is in pornography, which is so prevalent on the internet. 'That has been also observed by the various studies, Women's Aid recently released a report and that was their conclusion as well. 'My analysis of this is probably more anecdotal. 'As I look at the incidents and what is described, but also what the responses of the various assailants, perpetrators are, one can see that they have become normalised to the violence that they are seeing online.' Mr Harris said some men's view of a normal sexual relationship had become 'completely distorted'. He added: 'You can say almost that they have been radicalised. 'I do think there is an education piece for this. We have heard a lot over the last few weeks about limiting the access of children to all sorts of violent imagery, I think that's a good thing. 'It has to be faced up as well that there is a multibillion industry behind this that we are not going to defeat by attacking it, what we have to do is make sure people are educated and understand what a proper relationship is.' The commissioner said: 'What I am saying is one can see the trend, it is backed up by academic research. They said on Sunday: 'Just before 2.05pm, we received a report from our colleagues in Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service that a vehicle – a silver Mitsubishi Lancer GS2 – was on fire in the Rylagh Road area of the town. 'As fire officers extinguished the blaze they discovered that, tragically, a person had died as a result of the fire. 'We are treating this fire as arson, and our inquiries as to how the person came to be beside the vehicle are ongoing. 'We would appeal to anyone who may have been in the area between midday and 2.15pm yesterday, who may have noticed anything suspicious, to contact us. We would be particularly keen to hear from anyone who had dashcam or other footage and would also like to hear from anyone who may have noticed this particular vehicle.
