HYDERABAD: Be it for the flexibility, the chance to make some extra money, or for skill development, gig work has become the go-to option for students in higher educational institutions in recent times.
According to the Building the Next Generation of Tech Professionals report, released by NASSCOM recently, 44% of students are interested in gig work or freelancing. Reasons range from the autonomy it offers, increased access, and educational and institutional support. The survey was conducted in over 200 engineering colleges.
"Apart from regular internships and projects, I took up several projects, right from my second year of BTech to build my resume," said Karthikeya B, who completed his BTech in 2025 and secured a job with Rs 40 lakh as annual package.
He added: "While my coursework focused on web development using Python, I learned and did projects on web development using Java scripts on the side. In my third year, I did projects based on machine learning, deep learning, and cyber security.

"Right now, there is a huge demand for digital marketing and content creation as we have many social media influencers. To earn while studying B Tech, I learned image and video editing using YouTube and now charge influencers for making thumbnails for memes and video editing," said a student of JNTUH University College of Engineering, Science & Technology.
He said that this gig work will help him earn a livelihood if he fails to secure a job after engineering or will become a source of side income in the future.
"I am also doing projects on user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) to stand out from the crowd during placements," he added.
Faculty in these colleges say that they are encouraging students to take up various projects and internships, as coursework alone will not help them secure a job or build their own firm. "Those students who work on building their resume right from the start and are putting efforts to acquire various skills and are getting high-paying jobs," said Bangarraju Jampana, TPO, BV Raju Institute of Technology (BVRIT) adding students too have realised the importance of taking up projects or internships to gain practical exposure.

CTC is Rs 40 LPA but cannot even afford a vacation: CA decodes a 32-year-old techie's financial reality

An Indian techie earning Rs 40 LPA is struggling with financial freedom. (Pic credit- Istock. Image used for representative purpose only) It sounds like the dream, doesn't it? Rs 40 lakh per annum. Swanky job in tech. A 1.5 crore apartment in Mumbai. A shiny car in the parking lot. From the outside, it's a picture of success. But peel back the curtain, and the reality is sobering: a 32-year-old IT professional with a CTC of Rs 40 LPA is broke. Not just metaphorically — he literally cannot afford a single stress-free vacation. Welcome to India's newest illusion: high income with zero financial freedom. Chartered Accountant Nitin Kaushik recently broke down this alarming financial profile on X. CTC: Rs 40 LPAIn-hand salary: Rs 2.2 lakh/monthFlat in Mulund (Mumbai): Rs 1.5 croreHome loan: Rs 1.25 croreEMI: Rs 1.12 lakh/month Right off the bat, more than 50% of his salary goes toward the home loan. That's not including maintenance, property tax, or rising interest rates. Add to that: Car EMI: Rs 15,000/month, living expenses (food, utilities, social life): Rs 50,000/month. What's left? A razor-thin saving margin of Rs 30,000–Rs 40,000/month, if everything goes perfectly. But life rarely plays by the rules. One minor health issue, one job switch, or even a trip abroad — and the entire house of cards tumbles. — Finance_Bareek (@Finance_Bareek) - Asset-rich, liquidity-poor - Lifestyle inflated income- With no real investments or emergency fund- Retirement planning is becoming non-existent If your income isn't bringing you peace of mind, it may be time to rethink your financial approach. As Kaushik suggests, the first step is to control your spending — don't let your income dictate your expenses; instead, let your long-term goals lead the way. Building a liquid emergency fund is essential and non-negotiable. Focus on investing in real, appreciating assets like mutual funds, index funds, or stocks, and steer clear of lifestyle debt that only drains your to the CA, in today's economy, cash flow is king. So if you're earning big but still broke, you're not alone. But staying stuck in the trap is a choice. ( Originally published on Jul 14, 2025 )

Crypto legend's banana chart flashes warning as Bitcoin hits $123,000 — is a big crash coming?

Seasoned trader Peter Brandt, who has famously predicted some of the largest Bitcoin moves years in advance, is sounding a lighthearted but serious warning as Bitcoin reaches $123,000, as per a the weekend, Brandt posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) a powerful and strangely funny graphic: the entire price history into a banana-shaped curve, as reported by The Street. He asked his followers on X, 'If the entire price history of Bitcoin was a fruit, what fruit would you say it was?' as quoted in the report. Every single one of its significant surges, Brandt points out, has resulted in a sudden and painful price reversal, according to the report. The cryptocurrency's current price, which is at $123,000, lies exactly at what Brandt refers to as the "upper rim" of this upward channel, a technical roof where history indicates Bitcoin has historically experienced big pullbacks, as per The Street report. QCP Capital has said that spot BTC ETFs had more than $2 billion in flows last week alone, while leveraged longs are crowding into the market, as per The Street report.
