Country In Safe Hands, Says Ahmed Patel's Son Faisal, Praises PM Modi And Amit Shah

In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Faisal called PM Modi and Amit Shah 'great leaders'
Faisal Patel, the son of the late Congress stalwart Ahmed Patel, has triggered a political uproar with a statement praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union home minister Amit Shah.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-News18, Faisal called PM Modi and Amit Shah 'great leaders" and affirmed that 'the country is in safe hands". This statement has created a tricky situation for the Congress, particularly as it comes at a time when the party and its leader, Rahul Gandhi, are aggressively attacking the government on issues such as Operation Sindoor and alleged 'vote theft".
Faisal Patel's remarks are also being seen in light of other Congress leaders like Shashi Tharoor and Manish Tewari, who have recently diverged from the party line on a few occasions. He went on to name other prominent ministers, stating, 'Narendra Modi ji, Amit Shah ji, Nitin Gadkari ji, S Jaishankar are all solid leaders."
The significance of Faisal Patel's statement is magnified by the legacy of his father. Ahmed Patel was not just a leader but was revered as a trusted strategist and 'troubleshooter" for the Congress high command. Often referred to as Sonia Gandhi's 'right hand", he was a quiet yet influential player in Delhi politics, and no major party decision, from organisational reshuffles to electoral ticket distribution, was made without his counsel. His robust network and strategic acumen made him one of the most effective behind-the-scenes figures in the party.

BRS blames Congress, BJP for urea shortage in Telangana

HYDERABAD Senior leader of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and former MLA Gandra Venkata Ramana Reddy has said farmers in the State are facing a serious crisis of urea shortage at a time when cultivation of Kharif crops has gained pace with rains over the last two weeks, as the State and Central governments are speaking in different tones on the issue. Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, he said despite having eight MPs in Lok Sabha from Telangana, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was unable to supply urea in time. Instead of speaking on the Congress government, the BJP leaders were biding time on speaking against BRS and Union Minister Bandi Sanjay was unable to see the poor water level in Lower Manair Dam. However, the Congress government was not willing to switch on the Kannepally pump house to give water to the rain-deficit areas while huge quantities of water was flowing down BJP was also not interested in building pressure on the government to do so. The sole objective the two parties appears be defaming BRS come what may, he observed. While the Congress government was planning to harass its political opponents with the help of Kaleshwaram Commission report, the bickering in BJP had forced the party leadership to include Eatala Rajender's name in it, Mr. Venkata Ramana Reddy said and added that the two parties were making Kaleshwaram project defunct in the name of NDSA report. He also criticised the Congress government for its lack of sincerity in implementing 42% reservation to backward classes.

Robert Vadra dodged questions, put onus on deceased associates in money laundering probe: ED

Robert Vadra, businessman and husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, has been accused by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) of giving evasive and non-cooperative replies during questioning about a suspicious 2008 land deal in Gurugram's Shikohpur village. According to the ED's 332-page chargesheet, filed before a special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court in Delhi, Vadra repeatedly avoided direct answers and instead shifted full responsibility onto his three deceased associates, refusing to clarify his own role in the deal. His reluctance to cooperate significantly delayed the investigation and obstructed the agency's efforts to trace the flow of illicit funds. The federal agency alleges that Vadra used his political connections, including influence through former Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, to pressurise the government officials into approving the land transaction, which involved alleged fraudulent practices and money laundering. The chargesheet reveals that Vadra's company, Skylight Hospitality Private Limited, acquired 3.5 acres of land for Rs 7.50 crore in a deal where no real payment was made. The cheque mentioned in the sale deed was never issued by Vadra, and its value was significantly below market rates. Despite these irregularities, the deal was pushed through by the Directorate of Town and Country Planning (DTCP), allegedly after backdated approvals and altered plans to qualify for commercial licensing. Throughout the investigation, Vadra's evasiveness complicated the probe. The ED claims his refusal to provide clear responses hindered uncovering the full scope of the alleged money laundering and fraud. The agency has identified Rs 58 crore as proceeds of crime and provisionally attached 43 immovable properties worth Rs 38.69 crore linked to the case. Vadra and seven companies tied to him stand accused alongside others. The special PMLA court has scheduled August 28 to consider the ED's complaint and issued notices to Vadra and co-accused.

Israeli hostage families call for nationwide strike as Netanyahu prepares to escalate Gaza war

Families of Israelis held hostage in Gaza have called for a nationwide general strike next Sunday, in protest against the government's decision to expand the war and take over Gaza City, CNN reported. 'We are shutting down the country to save the soldiers and the hostages,' relatives of the hostages said at a gathering in Tel Aviv. They were joined by members of the October 7 Council, which represents families of soldiers killed at the start of the conflict. Organisers said the strike would begin as a grassroots effort, with private companies and citizens taking the day off to disrupt the economy. Within hours of the announcement, the October 7 Council said 'hundreds' of companies and 'thousands of citizens' had pledged to take part. Israel's largest trade union, the Histadrut, has not yet said if it will join the strike. The families plan to meet Histadrut chairman Arnon Bar-David on Monday to urge him to take part. Anat Angrest, whose son Matan is being held in Gaza, appealed to business leaders and labour organisations. 'Your silence is killing our children,' she said. 'I know your hearts are with us and in pain – but that is not enough. Silence kills. That is why I am here today to ask the heads of industry: you have the power.' The Histadrut held a general strike last year in support of hostage families, disrupting transport, banking, and healthcare after six Israeli hostages were killed in Gaza in September 2024. The Israeli government criticised the strike as political and sought to stop it through a labour court order. While the Histadrut has stayed quiet on the latest call, opposition parties have expressed support. Opposition leader Yair Lapid said, 'The call by the families of the hostages for a general strike is justified and appropriate.' Yair Golan, leader of the Democrats party, said his party would join the action. 'I call on all Israeli citizens anyone who holds the values of life and mutual responsibility dear to strike with us, to take to the streets, to resist and disrupt,' he said. The strike call follows the Israeli security cabinet's decision on Friday to approve a plan to expand the military campaign into Gaza City. Families of the 50 remaining hostages, 20 of whom are believed to be alive, say the plan could put their lives at greater risk. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the move in a news conference on Sunday. 'Contrary to false claims, this is the best way to end the war and the best way to end it speedily,' he told reporters.
