‘Don't give us ridiculous conditions': EFF and MK party invited to join Government of National Unity

African National Congress (ANC) NEC member Mzwandile Masina said his party is moving ahead with plans to include more political parties in the Government of National Unity (GNU), and discussions are ongoing with political parties, including the Jacob-Zuma-led uMkontho weSizwe party.
Earlier this week, IOL reported that as the ANC intensifies work to expand the size and reach of the GNU by adding more parties to the coalition currently governing South Africa, opposition party ActionSA insists it is not interested in joining the ruling arrangement.
Leader of ActionSA, Herman Mashaba said so far, he has only heard from media reports that the ANC wants to approach ActionSA for negotiations around GNU inclusion, but his party has not heard a word from Luthuli House.
One of the main political parties in the GNU, the Democratic Alliance (DA), strongly opposes expanding the ruling coalition.
However, Masina said the ANC insists that, as the leader of the pact, the time has come to press the reset button.
'This GNU is led by ourselves. The DA will have to accept that we are resetting the button. We are bringing others who will be prepared to subscribe. What we will not accept are conditions, because previously we were given ridiculous conditions which we could not accept, which is why other parties are not necessarily part of the GNU,' the former mayor of Ekurhuleni spoke to broadcaster Newzroom Afrika.

He said the ANC has directed the leadership led by President Cyril Ramaphosa to open discussions with other political parties represented in the National Assembly.
Masina said the ANC is not expelling the DA from the Government of National Unity, but the decision to stay or leave the coalition lies with the blue party.
'We do not have a permanent relationship with them, because even ideologically we are two different parties, and it has been proven that we have to consolidate and ensure that this government remains stable,' he said.

On the EFF and MK party, Masina said invitations have been extended to the opposition political parties and the ANC hopes they will not come with 'ridiculous conditions'.
'South Africa as a country is critical. We have spoken to those parties. We have spoken to EFF, we have spoken to MK, and MK is quite ridiculous. On one hand, they dispute the results (of the 2024 general elections) and on the other hand, they are in Parliament. There is a lot of confusion taking place there.
'With the EFF, there have been engagements, and I hope that this time around, they will not put demands that are ridiculous, that will make the ANC not consider. So I hope that throughout these engagements, they will allow us to ensure that we are firmer in terms of the statement and the principles that have been set up for this GNU, which is not permanent,' said Masina.

On Tuesday, IOL reported that ANC veteran and National Executive Committee (NEC) member Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has emphasised the need for the ANC to rebuild its structures on the ground and focus on local government to restore trust with the people.
With the upcoming local government elections, Dlamini-Zuma stressed that the ANC should prioritise strengthening its branches and delivering services to communities.
Service delivery remains a challenge in South Africa. This includes inadequate infrastructure, insufficient resources, and issues of maintenance and accountability.
Dlamini-Zuma highlighted the importance of building strong branches.
"Our branches must be built properly because the strength of the branch is what they do in the community… We are going to the local government elections, and we should be concentrating on that right now."
In 2017, Dlamini-Zuma lost the battle to become the ANC president to Cyril Ramaphosa, who won with 2,440 votes. Dlamini-Zuma got 2,261.
However, under Ramaphosa, the party lost its parliamentary majority in a historic election result that put South Africa on a new political path, in which the ANC was forced to form the Government of National Unity (GNU) with the DA and other small parties.

Nobuhle Mthembu resigns from ActionSA to focus on NGO
Former City of Johannesburg speaker and ActionSA councillor Nobuhle Mthembu says she dumped the party to focus on her non-governmental organisation (NGO), Assertive Woman and Girls, and not another political party. Mthembu resigned from ActionSA and as its proportional representation councillor on Friday nearly two months after being voted out as speaker and replaced with Margaret Arnolds. She said after careful consideration she realised that the party's internal dynamics and decision-making processes no longer aligned with her values and the interests of the constituency she represents. "I firmly believe that organisations must foster open discussions, transparency and democracy. Despite our efforts to address these concerns, meaningful change has not been forthcoming," Mthembu said. She added that she had now taken a decision in the best interest of both her and the constituency she represents to part ways with ActionSA, marking the end of her association with the party. Following her resignation, Mthembu addressed rumours linking her to former EFF deputy president and expelled uMkhonto weSizwe Party secretary-general Floyd Shivambu's Mayibuye Consultation Party. "I left ActionSA yesterday (Friday). I didn't leave it to join any political party but rather because of internal dynamics. "However, at this current point in time, I have not been approached by Mayibuye nor have I agreed to join the party. That is false news," she insisted. ActionSA Gauteng provincial chairperson Funzela Ngobeni confirmed Mthembu's departure, acknowledged her contribution and wished her well for the future. ActionSA is among the political parties that have faced criticism over their failure to hold conferences to elect leaders. However, Ngobeni said after last year's national and provincial elections ActionSA undertook a comprehensive review of the organisation. "One of the key outcomes was a mandate to rebuild our membership and branch structures from the ground up. In line with our constitution, the convening of the people's convention is contingent on meeting the prescribed threshold of launched branches," he said. Ngobeni said ActionSA was working actively towards this constitutional requirement with new branches being almost daily across the country, which is progress the party is immensely proud of. Additionally, according to Ngobeni, ActionSA's holding of people's convention was currently with its highest decision-making body, the senate, which will communicate its resolutions with internal structures and then publicly.

Ramaphosa takes aim at employment equity critics, calls for men to ‘rise up' in GBV fight
Ramaphosa acknowledged that government and men in society should be doing more to protect women. President Cyril Ramaphosa has used a National Women's Day speech to slam critics of his government's employment equity and BEE policies. The Employment Equity Act was passed to avoid the discrimination of people on the basis of race, gender or disability, while Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is more specific in its remedies. The policies have been criticised by some as being open to corruption and prohibitive to economic growth. Speaking at the Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen, Limpopo, Ramaphosa said such criticism was bemusing. 'It is funny for me that there are those in our society who oppose the Employment Equity Act, who also impose empowerment instruments that were put together, and they at least realised that all those instruments are meant to lift all those who were oppressed by the previous system, including those white people who the previous system gave privileges to. 'It did not give all the privileges, because people who are disabled who happen to be white were not empowered. People who are women who happen to be white were not empowered. It is through these acts, employment equity and various other acts, that we are seeking to raise everyone who were disadvantaged in the past. He said SA women needed to be lifted up because they have 'borne the brunt of the oppression of the past'. 'We continue to see incidents of gender-based violence. But what is more troubling is how the men of our country continue to abuse women, not only by killing them, but also by raping and brutally killing them. 'But it gets worse when it actually involves the rape of children, children as young as a few months, children as young as two years, and the impregnation of young girls, as it was being said earlier here by Minister Chikunga. 'That is painful. And that is why we say we must all rise against gender-based violence. We must all rise, men and and make sure that we bring the levels of gender-based violence down.'
