Globe and Mail4 days ago
Earnings reports from major tech giants are in focus this week, with Meta Platforms META, Microsoft MSFT, Apple AAPL and Amazon AMZN set to announce results. These updates are expected to provide crucial insights into their future growth strategies, particularly around AI and infrastructure investments.
Except for Apple, these stocks have been key drivers of the market's rally from the April lows to fresh all-time highs. Microsoft and Meta have each surged over 30% in the past three months, while Amazon is up 24%, underscoring strong investor confidence in their AI leadership. All three are heavily investing in data centers and infrastructure critical to powering large language models and other AI technologies.
Apple, meanwhile, has been a notable laggard, gaining just 2% during the same period as it faces slowing device sales and investor skepticism over its AI roadmap.
As a group, the so-called 'Magnificent 7' is expected to report a 14% year-over-year increase in second-quarter earnings on 11.9% higher revenues, highlighting the sector's continued strength despite a mixed macro backdrop (read: Big Tech Earnings Coming Up: Spotlight on Mag 7 ETFs).
Microsoft
Microsoft is scheduled to report on July 30 after market close. Microsoft has an Earnings ESP of -0.64% and a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy). According to our methodology, the combination of a positive Earnings ESP and a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy), 2 or 3 (Hold) increases the chances of an earnings beat. Microsoft saw no earnings estimate revision over the past 30 days for the second quarter of fiscal 2025. Its earnings track record is impressive, with the four-quarter earnings surprise being 5.21%, on average. The Zacks Consensus Estimate indicates earnings growth of 13.56% and revenue growth of 13.88% from the year-ago quarter.
The world's largest software company will continue to grow as artificial intelligence applications drive more cloud infrastructure usage. Microsoft's Azure cloud business is benefiting from the company's partnership with AI leader OpenAI.
Wall Street is clearly bullish on the world's largest software company heading into the results, raising the target price on the stock. Evercore ISI raised its price target to $545.00 from $515.00, citing that the company's momentum in Azure and AI will continue to drive "durable double-digit top and bottom line growth.' Wedbush lifted the price target to $6000. According to Wedbush, the company "is just hitting its next phase of monetization on the AI front," thanks to the adoption of Copilot, its chatbot and the cloud-computing platform Azure (read: ETFs to Surge as Microsoft Tops $3.5T, Reclaims Top Spot).
T-Rex 2X Long Microsoft Daily Target ETF MSFX and Direxion Daily MSFT Bull 2X Shares MSFU seek to track two times the performance of the stock of Microsoft. MSFU is slightly cheaper, charging 99 bps in annual fees, while MSFX has a 1.05% expense ratio.
Meta Platforms
Meta Platforms will also report second-quarter 2025 earnings on July 30 after market close. It has an Earnings ESP of +2.91% and a Zacks Rank #1. The social media giant saw a positive earnings estimate revision of five cents for the second quarter over the past seven days. The Zacks Consensus Estimate for the yet-to-be-reported quarter indicates substantial year-over-year earnings growth of 12.98%. Revenues are expected to increase 14.77% year over year. Meta Platforms delivered an earnings surprise of 17.30%, on average, in the last four quarters.
Meta's AI strategy now serves as the backbone of its business transformation. The company has now committed $60-70 billion in capital expenditure for this year, with the lion's share earmarked for AI infrastructure. This includes cutting-edge data centers like Prometheus and Hyperion, as well as the deployment of NVIDIA's Grace Hopper Superchip. These bold investments are already delivering results across Meta's platforms. The 30% adoption of Advantage+ is driving a 5% boost in Reels conversion rates. AI-driven recommendations have lifted time spent on Facebook by 7% and on Threads by a remarkable 35%. Instagram Reels engagement is up 24%, fueled by improved algorithmic personalization.
The world's largest social media platform projects revenues in the range of $42.5-$45.5 billion for the second quarter.
As such, single-stock ETFs targeting META have been in focus. GraniteShares 2x Long META Daily ETF FBL and Direxion Daily META Bull 2X Shares METU are the two available options. Both funds track two times the performance of Meta Platforms stock. META is slightly cheap, charging 95 bps in annual fees, while FBL has a 1.15% expense ratio.
Apple
Apple has an Earnings ESP of +3.52% and a Zacks Rank #3. Apple saw a positive earnings estimate revision of a penny over the past 30 days for the fiscal third quarter of 2025. The iPhone maker has a strong track record of positive earnings surprises. It delivered an average earnings surprise of 4.68% in the trailing four quarters. The Zacks Consensus Estimate indicates a modest year-over-year increase of 1.43% for earnings and 3.67% for revenues.
On the last earnings call, the iPhone maker guided 'low to mid-single digit' sales growth for the fiscal third quarter. Chief executive Tim Cook warned that Apple is likely to face a $900 million headwind as a result of tariffs. He added that it is 'very difficult' to predict beyond June due to uncertainties surrounding the U.S.-China trade policy.
Apple is scheduled to report on July 31 after market close. Investors seeking exposure to Apple ahead of its earnings could consider T-Rex 2X Long Apple Daily Target ETF AAPX, GraniteShares 2x Long AAPL Daily ETF AAPB and Direxion Daily AAPL Bull 2X AAPU. The trio tracks 200% of the daily percentage change of the common stock of Apple. AAPB is costlier, charging a high expense ratio of 1.65% while AAPX has an expense ratio of 1.05%. AAPU charges 89 bps in annual fees from investors.
Amazon
Amazon will also release its results on July 31 after market close. The stock has an Earnings ESP of +7.37% and a Zacks Rank #1. The company saw a positive earnings estimate revision of a penny over the past seven days for the second quarter. The Zacks Consensus Estimate indicates a year-over-year earnings increase of 8.13% and substantial revenue growth of 9.67% for the to-be-reported quarter. Additionally, Amazon's earnings surprise history is impressive, with the four-quarter average surprise being 20.68%.
Amazon continues to dominate the e-commerce business and is expanding its footprint in cloud computing, advertising and various other sectors. The world's largest online retailer projected revenues of $159-$164 billion for the second quarter of 2025. Blockbuster Prime Day Event sales are likely to boost revenues for the company (read: 5 ETFs to Profit From Amazon's Longest-Ever Prime Day Event).
Like other tech companies, Amazon is ramping up investments in data centers, chips and the power needed for AI workloads. It is also investing in its own computer chips and those developed by NVIDIA. However, CFO Brian Olsavsky, on the last earnings call, issued a cautious outlook due to uncertain consumer demand in the face of President Trump's shifting tariff policies.
Direxion Daily AMZN Bull 2X Shares ETF AMZU tracks two times the performance of Amazon shares, charging 87 bps in annual fees.

Cook warns on tariff costs, but iPhone sales drive growth

SAN FRANCISCO, California: Apple projected stronger-than-expected revenue for the current quarter ending in September, helping lift its shares in after-hours trading even as Chief Executive Tim Cook cautioned that U.S. tariffs could add US$1.1 billion in costs during the period. The tariffs, a key element of U.S. President Donald Trump's trade policy, had already cost Apple $800 million in the June quarter. Cook acknowledged that the uncertainty around tariffs led some customers to purchase iPhones earlier than usual this year, a factor that contributed to Apple's fiscal third-quarter results beating analyst estimates by the widest margin in at least four years, according to LSEG. For the quarter ended June 28, Apple reported revenue of $94.04 billion, up nearly 10 percent from a year earlier and above the $89.54 billion analysts had forecast. Earnings per share were $1.57, compared with expectations of $1.43. Looking ahead, Chief Financial Officer Kevan Parekh said Apple anticipates "mid to high single digit" revenue growth in the September quarter, stronger than analysts' projection of 3.27 percent growth to $98.04 billion. Shares of the Cupertino, California-based company rose three percent in after-hours trading after the forecast. iPhone sales, Apple's most important business line, rose 13.5 percent to $44.58 billion, surpassing estimates of $40.22 billion. The company has been diversifying its supply chain, sourcing iPhones from India and manufacturing other products such as Macs and Apple Watches in Vietnam, to reduce exposure to tariffs. Sales in the Americas, Apple's largest market, grew 9.3 percent to $41.2 billion, while Greater China sales reached $15.37 billion, up from a year earlier and above Visible Alpha's consensus estimate of $15.12 billion. That performance reversed a decline in the previous quarter, supported in part by Chinese government subsidy programs that boosted smartphone sales. Cook told analysts that Apple saw seasonal records for upgrades of iPhones, Macs, and Apple Watches during the quarter. He estimated that about one percentage point of the company's 9.6 percent revenue growth came from customers accelerating purchases ahead of potential tariff hikes. The tariff outlook remains unsettled. While many Apple products are currently exempt, Washington is still negotiating with both China and India, and Trump has warned India could face tariffs of up to 25 percent. Analysts said that even if such duties are imposed, Apple's long-term production shift to India could help mitigate cost pressures. Despite the strong quarter, Apple faces several challenges. Its stock is down 17 percent in 2025, underperforming technology peers such as Microsoft and Nvidia, whose valuations have surged on enthusiasm for artificial intelligence. Investors have expressed concern over Apple's slower integration of AI features compared with rivals. Cook confirmed that the company has delayed the launch of an AI-enhanced version of Siri but said Apple is "making good progress on a personalized Siri" and is expanding investments in artificial intelligence. Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, music, and cloud storage, reported $27.42 billion in sales, ahead of expectations of $26.8 billion. Wearables revenue was $7.4 billion, short of the $7.82 billion forecast, while Mac sales reached $8.05 billion, above the $7.26 billion estimate. iPad sales totaled $6.58 billion, below the $7.24 billion analysts expected. Gross margins in the June quarter were 46.5 percent, exceeding expectations of 45.9 percent. For the September quarter, Apple forecast margins between 46 percent and 47 percent, which was also above consensus. Cook summarized the company's strategy by saying that Apple's approach to AI and other technologies remains focused on accessibility and ease of use, emphasizing that this philosophy "is at the heart of our AI strategy."

3 Reasons Meta Platforms Stock Has Looked Unstoppable, but Can It Stay That Way?

Key Points Meta has been experiencing incredible growth outside of North America. Its margins have been improving and it has also continued to grow its user count. A possible breakup of the company, however, could adversely impact its growth potential. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) stock has been jumping after the company reported earnings recently. It's now trading at all-time highs as the social media giant has continually impressed investors over the past couple of years. It has been showing strong growth on multiple fronts and has looked downright unstoppable. But whether it can continue to be a hot buy is by no means a sure thing, as there are many question marks around the company. Here's a look at what's been behind the stock's impressive performance of late, and also what risks investors should consider before buying shares of Meta Platforms. 1. Revenue has been rising fast outside of North America The headline from Meta's second-quarter earnings performance was that the company beat expectations as sales rose by 22%, totaling $47.5 billion, and they beat expectations of $44.8 billion. Earnings per share of $7.14 also came in far better than the $5.92 analysts were expecting. But what was particularly surprising and impressive was where the company's growth has been coming from. Over the past two years, advertising revenue from the U.S. and Canada has grown by a little under 42%. In other markets, the growth rate has been much higher. In Europe, revenue has risen by 56% over a two-year period and it's up 64% in Meta's rest of the world segment. Asia-Pacific growth of just over 42% was also slightly higher than the growth Meta experienced in the U.S. and Canada market. Overall, there looks to still be considerable growth potential for Meta when looking at international markets, which is an encouraging sign for growth investors. 2. Meta is becoming much more efficient Another great sign for investors is that Meta's business is doing more with less. Its expenses as a percentage of revenue have been coming down sharply in the past couple of years. Its operating margin this past quarter was 43%, versus 38% in the prior-year period. Meta has been utilizing artificial intelligence to make its operations more efficient and as it continues to do that, this trend may continue. Furthermore, if its margins expand, its bottom line can look even more impressive, making the social media stock appear cheaper in the future. 3. Number of daily active people continues to rise Back in 2022, there were concerns that Meta Platforms' business was in trouble as Facebook experienced its first-ever decline in daily users. But those fears look to be long gone as the company has now been steadily growing its user count. With close to 3.5 billion daily active people who are using one of its apps (Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp), it's little wonder why the company is a top choice for marketers and ad spend. While it's not easy to continually add users when the numbers get this high, Meta has been able to do just that, demonstrating how truly unstoppable its business has been in recent years, or so it may seem. Risks investors can't afford to ignore Meta's business has looked unstoppable but that doesn't mean it doesn't come with risks. There is still an antitrust battle looming over the business that could result in the loss of two of its most highly prized assets: Instagram and WhatsApp. They are particularly popular among younger audiences and if a breakup occurs, that could be a big loss for Meta's business. And right now, investors don't appear to be pricing in that risk. Another issue is that while user count has been rising, a report from The Wall Street Journal earlier this year found the company took a lax approach to getting scammers off its platforms, and that it has effectively become a hub for fraudsters. According to an analysis from 2022, as much as 70% of new advertisers were either promoting scams or selling illegal or low-quality goods. These are potentially serious concerns that investors shouldn't overlook. While the business is doing incredibly well, if its numbers are being inflated due to bad actors on its platforms, then that could lead to significant issues down the road. Should you buy Meta Platforms' stock today? As of Thursday's close, Meta's stock has risen by 32% since the start of the year. It's trading at a forward price-to-earnings multiple of 28, based on analyst estimates. Its incredible profit growth is impressive and is a big reason why the stock continually looks cheap. But I wouldn't rush to buy the stock, at least not until there's more clarity about what happens with Instagram and WhatsApp, and if a breakup ends up taking place. And I'm also wary about its user growth, and whether scams and fake accounts could be contributing significantly to its growth. As good as Meta's results have looked in recent quarters, I'm not convinced the business is as unstoppable as it appears to be, as there could be trouble ahead. Prediction: This Will Be Nvidia's Stock Price 3 Years From Now

Key Points Nvidia's revenue is rising alongside data center spending. Nvidia expects the global data center capital expenditure total to be $1 trillion by 2028. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) is the world's largest company and has risen to this position at an unbelievable pace, but it's far from done growing. Nvidia is one of the primary benefactors of the artificial intelligence (AI) arms race because its GPUs have become the standard computing unit that many AI companies have built their models on. There is still several years' worth of strong growth ahead for Nvidia's stock, and investors should still consider adding to an existing Nvidia position in their portfolio right now. But what kind of upside can investors expect over the next three years? Let's find out. Data center growth is driving Nvidia's success Nvidia makes graphics processing units (GPUs), computing hardware that specializes in processing arduous workloads. Originally, GPUs were intended for gaming graphics (thus the name), but they eventually found use cases beyond gaming, including engineering simulations, drug discovery, mining cryptocurrencies, and ultimately, processing AI workloads. The biggest reason Nvidia has been such a successful investment is that it's one of the primary companies that is profiting from the massive AI arms race. While many of the big tech companies are investing billions of dollars in data centers to offer AI tools that may eventually generate revenue, Nvidia is a primary recipient of this investment. While 2025 is shaping up to be a record year for data center spend, next year could be even bigger. Just look at what Meta Platforms said about 2026 capital expenditures: While the infrastructure planning process remains highly dynamic, we currently expect another year of similarly significant capital expenditures dollar growth in 2026 as we continue aggressively pursuing opportunities to bring additional capacity online to meet the needs of our artificial intelligence efforts and business operations. This quote clearly indicates that Meta is going to significantly exceed the $66 billion to $72 billion range it gave investors for 2025 capital expenditures in 2026. Many of the AI hyperscalers will likely deliver similar language as we approach 2026, and this bodes well for several companies, including Nvidia. This data center growth backs up a projection that Nvidia gave during its 2025 GTC event. In 2024, a third party estimated that global data center capital expenditures were $400 billion. By 2028, it's expected to rise to $1 trillion. If that comes true, what can shareholders expect Nvidia's stock price to be in three years? Nvidia's growth would take it to nearly $250 per share In FY 2025 (which encompasses most of 2024), Nvidia's revenue totaled $115 billion. That indicates nearly 30% of the estimated data center spend went to Nvidia. To bake a little conservatism into our projection, let's estimate that Nvidia can capture 25% of the forecasted $1 trillion. This conservatism allows the overall data center buildout figure to be smaller and allows other technologies coming to market to eat into Nvidia's data center share. That would indicate that Nvidia would generate $250 billion in data center revenue alone, but Nvidia also has other parts of its business that it can benefit from. In FY 2025, Nvidia generated $131 billion in revenue, so there is still a sizable percentage of revenue that comes from non-data center sources. If we estimate that this remaining revenue grows at a 10% pace, its non-data center revenue would rise to $23 billion by 2028. So, using these projections, Nvidia's revenue would total around $273 billion, up 84% from today's level. Depending on whether you think Nvidia's valuation is reasonable or not, its revenue growth could directly correlate to stock price growth. However, I think it's a tad expensive. Currently, Nvidia's stock trades at nearly 60 times earnings. If that were to fall to 40 times earnings and if Nvidia can maintain a 55% profit margin (it only fell in Q1 due to the sizable write-off of its H20 chips), then Nvidia would produce $150 billion in profits. At 40 times earnings, that would give Nvidia a $6 trillion market cap, pricing the stock at just shy of $250 per share. That's strong growth, and would make Nvidia a market-beating stock at that price. As a result, I'm still confident that Nvidia is a top stock to buy now. Should you invest $1,000 in Nvidia right now? Before you buy stock in Nvidia, consider this: The Motley Fool Stock Advisor analyst team just identified what they believe are the 10 best stocks for investors to buy now… and Nvidia wasn't one of them.
