‘Absolutely possible': US is considering inviting Zelenskyy to Alaska; says everyone is ‘hopeful' it would happen
The White House is weighing whether to invite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Alaska, where US President Donald Trump is set to meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, on August 15, as per a senior US official and three people familiar with the talks, reports NBC News.
'It's being discussed,' said one of the people familiar with the internal discussions.
'Everyone is very hopeful that would happen,' said a senior administration official, noting that it was 'absolutely' possible, reported NBC News.
It remains unclear whether Putin and Zelenskyy would be in the same room even if the latter were to travel to Alaska, said a person familiar with the talks.
The White House initially required Putin to meet with Zelenskyy as a condition for Trump's talks with the Russian president, but Trump later said that it was not a necessary precondition.
'The President remains open to a trilateral summit with both leaders. Right now, the White House is focusing on planning the bilateral meeting requested by President Putin,' a senior White House official said, as per NBC News.
Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, also met Putin in Moscow ahead of Friday's deadline for the Russian leader to agree to a ceasefire or face new sanctions.
Putin has not yet agreed to a ceasefire, but has forwarded a proposal to end the war to let Russia retain control of large areas of Ukrainian territory.

"There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both,' between Russia and Ukraine, Donald Trump said at an event at the White House on Friday, reported NBC News. "We're going to get some back, and we're going to get some switched."
Zelenskyy on Saturday accused Putin of attempting 'legalise the occupation' of Ukraine's territories amid ongoing efforts to negotiate a peace deal. He criticised Putin's 'tactics' and stressed that Russia must end the war it started.
"Everyone can clearly see Putin's tactics. He fears sanctions and is doing everything to bail on them. He wants to exchange a pause in the war, in the killings, for the legalisation of the occupation of our land," Zelenskyy said, through a video message on X.
"We will not allow this second attempt to partition Ukraine. Knowing Russia, where there is a second, there will be a third. That is why we stand firm on clear Ukrainian positions. We must end the war with a dignified peace, based on a clear and reliable security architecture," he added.

Ignored for Alaska talks, Zelenskyy serves a warning: Putin will try to ‘deceive' Trump on ceasefire
Sidelined in the Alaska summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned US President Donald Trump against deception by Vladimir Putin. The warning came as he and European partners pressed Trump to not give a free pass to the Russian leader. As US President Donald Trump prepares to host Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned that the Russian leader intends to 'deceive' the United States. But the Russian leader is not his only concern. Zelenskyy and his European partners are primarily concerned that Trump could cut a deal with Putin about the Russian war in Ukraine without Ukraine's involvement. They are also concerned that Trump could pressure Ukraine into a deal friendly to Putin, such as accepting his demand of handing over the entire eastern Ukraine's Donbas region to Russia as a condition to end the war. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Amid such fears, Zelenskyy has spend recent days putting up a united front with European leaders and conveying to Trump that any deal without Ukraine and Europe's participation and approval will be meaningless. To make it crystal-clear, Germany will convene a summit of Ukrainian and European leaders, including the European Union (EU), with Trump and his deputy JD Vance on Wednesday. Ahead of the Europe-US summit, Zelenskyy warned, 'We understand the Russians' intention to try to deceive America. We will not allow this. I greatly appreciate the determination of President Trump to stop the deaths in war. Many people give their lives every day. But the only root cause of these killings is Putin's desire to fight and manipulate everyone he comes into contact with.' Even as Zelenskyy and European leaders press Trump to not be deceived, they are well aware of the president's record so far. He has not taken any punitive action so far and has instead trashed Ukraine time to time — including on Monday when he slammed Zelenskyy for not surrendering Ukraine's territories to end the war. Even when his deadline passed last week and Putin did not agree to a ceasefire, Trump did nothing and instead announced the summit in Alaska. Trump sets low expectations as Zelenskyy considers concessions Ahead of the Alaska summit, Trump has set the expectations low, saying that it would be a 'feel-out meeting' intended to see if the Putin was ready to reach an agreement. He said that he would know within the first two minutes of the meeting whether the Russian leader wanted to end the war. Trump has said that any deal would involve 'some swapping of territories'. Zelenskyy has rejected giving any handover of Ukrainian land to Russia, saying that Ukraine 'will not give Russia any awards for what it has done' and that 'Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier'. Zelenskyy further said, 'Any decisions that are without Ukraine are at the same time decisions against peace. They will not bring anything. These are dead decisions. They will never work.' STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Zelenskyy, however, is willing to cede territory that is already controlled by Russia, which would freezing battle lines, according to The Telegraph. However, Zelenskyy is not willing to cede any Ukraine-held territory to Russia and the surrender of Russia-held territories would be subjected to conditions like security guarantees, the report said. Separately, The Associated Press reported Ukrainian officials as saying that Zelenskyy would be willing to sign a peace deal that would de facto recognise Ukraine's inability to regain lost territories militarily. The report suggests that Zelenskyy would be willing to see de facto recognition of Russia-controlled territories but no de jure —legal— recognition.

'Jhukna nahin hai': Minister Shivraj Chouhan tells farmers as India faces 50% US tariffs, ‘will explore new markets'
Union agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Tuesday asked farmers "not to worry" about the 50 per cent tariff India faces from the United States. Speaking at an event, the BJP leader assured that India will work to explore 'new markets' amid the "testing times" due to high tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump. The union minister reiterated PM Modi's statement and said that India will not comprise on the 'interests of the country's farmers even if it means paying a heavy price'.(Sansad Tv) Trump announced an additional 25 per cent tariff on India last week, citing purchase of Russian oil amid the Ukraine war. With this, the total tariff rate India faces increased to 50 percent. The first 25 per cent were imposed on July 30 by Trump due to New Delhi's tariffs 'being the highest in the world' and as a penalty for its purchase of Russian oil, military equipment and participation in BRICS. 'Will not compromise' The minister reiterated PM Narendra Modi's recent statement and said that India will not comprise on the 'interests of the country's farmers even if it means paying a heavy price'. "Farmers, don't worry. Let's see what will happen. We are a country of 140 crore people. There will be a little bit of difficulty but we will see. We will explore new markets. India is such a big market, it will be consumed here itself," said Chouhan while addressing a group of farmer leaders in Delhi. "India's 140 crore population is not a weakness but our strength," he said, adding that "this is our testing time and we need not bow down (before the US)". "Koi jhukne ka kaam nahin hai. Samjhauta barabari pe hota hai. Thode humare, thode tumhare (There is no need to bow down. The agreement should be between equals with give and take)," he said. The minister further noted that the US should keep the agriculture sector aside as there is no "fair comparison" in the scale of farm operations and farm holdings between India and the US. Following the announcement of the 50 per cent tariff on India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that the interests of farmers will remain a "top priority" for India. "India will never compromise on the interests of its farmers, dairy farmers and fishermen. I know I will personally have to pay a heavy price but I am prepared for it," said Modi. As India and the US work towards establishing a bilateral trade deal, agriculture has been a point of discord between the two nations. Based on reports, the US has insisted on access to agriculture, dairy and fishery sectors, against which India has put its foot down. (With inputs from PTI)

SC to examine plea asking if convicted politician can head political party
Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Aug 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court on Tuesday said it would examine the question whether a politician can be denied the constitutional right to head a political party or association on the basis of conviction and being disqualified to vote. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi termed the issue raised in 2017 PIL as an 'interesting question". According to the top court, the question — should a constitutional court direct that irrespective of your right under Article 19, you will not be entitled to form an association of political ideology only because you are not entitled to cast vote — was to be considered. The bench posted the PIL filed by Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay raising the issue for November 19. 'Merely because a person has been disqualified for a statutory right, you can't ipso facto deprive him of his constitutional right," Justice Kant said. Upadhyay, appearing in person, said a person disqualified from casting vote cannot distribute party tickets to the candidates. 'This issue needs to be examined as it is a grey area. Several commissions including the law commission has emphasised on the need for not allowing the convicted to head a political party," he said. The bench called the issue 'worth consideration" and noted it had 'something in mind" but required a detailed hearing. 'Suppose tomorrow Parliament enacts a law that no person will hold public office beyond the age of 80 years, can you also deprive him from leading a political party?" Justice Kant asked. Upadhyay has sought banning convicted persons from forming political parties and becoming their office bearers for the period they are disqualified.
