Club World Cup: Fluminense, Dortmund advance to knockout round

The Guardian4 days ago

Fluminense completed a full Brazilian contingent in the Club World Cup round of 16 after a goalless draw with Mamelodi Sundowns secured their progress from Group F on Wednesday.
Despite being on the back foot for much of the match at Miami's Hard Rock Stadium, Fluminense advanced after finishing second in the group with five points, two behind group winners Borussia Dortmund, who edged Ulsan 1-0.
The result set up a last-16 clash next Monday in Charlotte, where Fluminense will face either River Plate, Inter Milan, or Monterrey.
They join fellow Brazilian clubs Flamengo, Palmeiras, and Botafogo in the business end of the 32-club tournament.
Sundowns, who finish third with four points, will be left to lament missed opportunities after a promising start. Lucas Ribeiro and Tashreeq Matthews both came close early on, only to be denied by 44-year-old veteran goalkeeper Fábio.
The South African side controlled possession and attacked in waves from the flanks but were unable to convert their dominance into goals.
Fluminense responded with greater urgency after the half-hour cooling break and nearly snatched the lead in the 57th minute, when Germán Cano's low volley struck the post.
Though the 65,000-plus capacity stadium was largely empty, with only 14,312 fans showing up, a blend of Brazilian chants and South African drum beats brought a festive energy to the contest.
A first-half goal from Daniel Svensson secured Borussia Dortmund's place in the Club World Cup round of 16, as they claimed a 1-0 victory over South Korea's Ulsan on Wednesday.

The German side started strongly, with Jobe Bellingham, Felix Nmecha and Karim Adeyemi posing a constant threat to Ulsan's defence. Svensson broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a close-range strike.
Ulsan goalkeeper Hyeon-Woo Jo made several impressive saves to prevent Dortmund from extending their lead, denying Serhou Guirassy's header and strikes from Pascal Gross and Yan Couto.
Dortmund finished top of Group F, with Fluminense in second.

Club World Cup could ‘destroy' Manchester City's season, says Pep Guardiola

Pep Guardiola has admitted the Club World Cup could 'destroy' Manchester City's 2025-26 campaign, with the manager ignoring its potential impact to avoid feeling anxious. On Monday, City face Al-Hilal in the last 16 at Orlando's Camping World Stadium. While some of Guardiola's players had only five days off before the start of the tournament, others enjoyed a three-week break. All the squad can expect at least three weeks off following the Club World Cup. Earlier this month, England coach Thomas Tuchel stated that the champions, Liverpool, and Arsenal, who finished second, have a 'huge advantage' next term due to not being at the tournament in the United States. Guardiola was asked about the England boss's claim. 'I try not to think about it, otherwise I will be so anxious,' Guardiola said. 'We will rest the time the Premier League allows us to. And game by game, month by month, we will see. And maybe in November, December, January, ask me, Pep. I may say: 'So listen, we are a disaster. We are exhausted. The World Cup destroyed us.' I don't know, but it's the first time in our life that that's happened [32-team CWC]. So we will see. 'So I try to be relaxed, to enjoy the days here, the good vibes that we have, the competition, to try to win it. And the most important thing, to recover, to find or re-find ourselves what we were. This is my main target in this tournament.' At the weekend, Jürgen Klopp, the former Liverpool manager, stated that the tournament winners will be the 'worst of all time' due to the relentless schedule. Klopp is now head of global soccer for Red Bull, with one of the teams he oversees, Salzburg, eliminated at the group stage. Guardiola responded to the German. 'I know where his idea comes from,' he said. 'We fought a lot [together] when we went to the Uefa meetings [or] especially when we discussed the Premier League calendar, about how to add more quality to it. [We discussed] giving the managers and players more rest. So his comments [on the Club World Cup] didn't surprise me a lot. I understand him. I respect him. I've had an incredible relationship with Jurgen for many years as rivals. 'Now he's stepped back from that position [as a manager] and I understand his argument, because I would defend his argument as well. At the same time, as managers we are in a job. We follow the Fifa, Uefa, Premier League rules. 'Many, many teams complain about these competitions because they are not here, otherwise they might love being here. They would have their media and supporters here, and there would be income to be here, and they would be happy to be here. Of course, it's not an ideal situation for the manager. Would I love to have two months to prepare for next season? Yes. Would I love to be refreshed for next season? Yes. But it is what it is.' Guardiola laughed off any concern. 'I am an extraordinary manager but to control lightning and thunder, still I am not good enough,' he said. Man Utd, Arsenal and Tottenham offered Chelsea star after £60m transfer

Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham have been offered a Chelsea player after the Blues agreed a £60m deal for Joao Pedro. Chelsea's eye-watering spending looks set to continue this summer with Todd Boehly already splashing over £100m on new signings. The Stamford Bridge club activated Liam Delap's £30m release clause and have agreed to pay Brighton £60m for Brazilian forward Pedro. Newcastle were also keen to sign Pedro, who has scored 30 goals over the past two seasons, and saw a £50m offer rejected by Brighton. Brighton also rebuffed Chelsea's first offer before agreeing to sell Pedro for an initial £55m, with another £5m in add-ons. Chelsea, meanwhile, have agreed a £55m deal for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, who had a brief spell at Stamford Bridge as a youth player. Following a flurry of signings, Chelsea are now expected to turn their attentions to the difficult talk of player sales, with around a dozen players set to be offloaded. The signings of Pedro and Gittens, two dynamic forwards, will accelerate Christopher Nkunku's exit following his largely disappointing spell in west London. Signed for £52m in 2023, the former Bundesliga player of the year has scored just six goals in 36 Premier League games and was left out of several of Enzo Maresca's matchday squads last season. Nkunku did score in Chelsea's Club World Cup last-16 win over Benfica on Saturday but has nevertheless been made available to other clubs including Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham. United held talks with Nkunku's camp last month as they look to bolster Ruben Amorim's struggling squad, though they have since confirmed the signing of Matheus Cunha and are working on a deal for Bryan Mbeumo. Arsenal reportedly made a transfer approach for Nkunku earlier in the year and are yet to strengthen Mikel Arteta's attacking options. Arteta is keen to add more firepower to his squad at the Emirates Stadium after agreeing deals for midfielders Martin Zubimendi and Christian Norgaard and goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga. Tottenham, meanwhile, were in talks with Nkunku just last month and Thomas Frank could sanction a deal as he looks set to miss out on his former Brentford forward Mbeumo to Man United. Nkunku is believed to be keen on a return to Germany but it remains to be seen whether Bayern Munich will revive their interest after considering a move in January. Djordje Petrovic Ben Chilwell Axel Disasi Renato Veiga Carney Chukwuemeka Lesley Ugochukwu Raheem Sterling Joao Felix Christopher Nkunku Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall Trevoh Chalobah Wesley Fofana Noni Madueke Nicolas Jackson Robert Sanchez Given Nkunku's bleak first-team prospects at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea are ready to take a loss on the Frenchman but are still hoping to raise around £35m from his sale. Like several of his future teammates, Chelsea's imminent £60m signing Pedro is expected to sign a lengthy seven-year deal with the club. The 23-year-old former Watford striker is set to join up with Maresca's squad in the United States and could even feature in the Club World Cup as Chelsea prepare to face Palmeiras in the quarter-finals and potentially Premier League rivals Manchester City in the semis. Gittens will not be eligible to feature for the Blues, however, as he has already featured for Dortmund in the tournament. More Trending The England U21 winger has been signed as a replacement for Jason Sancho, who Chelsea sent back to Manchester United, agreeing to pay a £5m penalty in the process. In terms of other player sales, Chelsea are hoping to offload Joao Felix, Raheem Sterling, Armando Broja, who were all left out of the Club World Cup squad. The Blues are even open to offers for first-team regular Noni Madueke, while Nicolas Jackson has been tentatively linked with Arsenal since Delap moved to Chelsea. Maresca is hoping to build on an encouraging first season at Stamford Bridge in which Chelsea qualified for the Champions League and won the Conference League.
