Five ways to keep your kids cool in the heat
IT can be really difficult - and costly - to keep kids cool when it's hot outside. But Fabulous Digital Senior Reporter and mum-of-two Sarah Bull shares five ways to help, and they won't break the budget either.
Strip them off
It might sound simple, but stripping kids off at home can really help them regulate their temperature when it's warm outside. Just remember to regularly apply suncream, as more of their skin will be exposed to the sun.
Cool down bedrooms before nighttime
When it's hot outside, it can be difficult for kids to go to sleep - especially if their bedroom feels like an oven. If you have a room that's not in direct sunshine, keep the windows open to let in a breeze. It's also a good idea to keep the curtains closed, to prevent the room from heating up.
Wear a hat
Another simple technique, but one that really works. Make sure that if your kids are playing outside, they've got a hat on. It keeps their face and head shielded from the sun, and also helps if you've got a little one who struggles with bright sunlight. If your tot struggles to keep a hat on, try one with a strap that goes under the chin to help.
Avoid the car
The car can be one of the hottest places during a heatwave, and often takes a long time to cool down. If you have the option, it's better to stay at home rather than taking kids out anywhere in a hot car.
Stay hydrated
This is always important, but even more so in a heatwave. Make sure you're regularly reminding your kids to have a drink, and top them up with cool liquids whenever you can. Use ice too to ensure it's as cold as it can possibly be.
Another added: 'Need this badly.'
A third commented: 'We're ready.'
Meanwhile, one parent beamed: 'Bought the first one my little boy, [he] loves it. Great value for money.'

B&M to shut popular Scots store as shoppers left ‘heartbroken'
The exact date the store will close has been revealed SHUTTERS DOWN B&M to shut popular Scots store as shoppers left 'heartbroken' Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) B&M has revealed that it is set to close a popular store in Scotland - and shoppers are "heartbroken". The bargain retailer's busy branch in Musselburgh, East Lothian, will close for good in a matter of months. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 A Scottish B&M store is set to close in months Credit: PA The store is located on the city's High Street and has been a staple in the community for years. But it is set to cease trading early next year in another blow to the high street. Staff will pull the shutters down for the final time on January 9, 2026. The reason for the closure is currently unclear. However, bosses have said that they are switching their focus to the nearby store in Fort Kinnaird instead. The store has recently undergone a huge revamp and is only a 12-minute drive away from the Musselburgh branch. Bosses have also revealed that all members of staff will be relocated to alternative stores in the area. A spokesperson for B&M said: "All colleagues from this store will be offered employment at local B&M stores in the surrounding area after the closure on January 9. 'We're committed to bringing the best possible B&M stores to East Lothian. "We recently upgraded our nearby Fort Kinnaird store – now home to a garden centre and a much bigger range just two miles away, ensuring we continue to offer the best possible shopping experience and broadest range in the area.' Shoppers are racing to B&M for Molly-Mae's latest collection & there are some incredible scents for less than a fiver Locals have been left gutted by the closure, and many have flocked to social media to share their disappointment. One person said: "More empty shops. No parking in Musselburgh to encourage retailers. Shame for staff." Another added: "A bloody disgrace". Someone else wrote: "Such a shame, it's always busy". While a fourth posted: "Heart is BROKEN, this is gutting". And a fifth chimed in: "Shocking news". It comes after The Sun previously revealed that another B&M store in London closed back in March. B&M was founded in 1978 in Lancashire, with the first store opening in Blackpool. The retail chain now has over 700 stores across the UK and employs over 35,000 staff. And over four million customers walk through the doors of stores across the country every week. RETAIL PAIN IN 2025 The British Retail Consortium has predicted that the Treasury's hike to employer NICs will cost the retail sector £2.3billion. Research by the British Chambers of Commerce shows that more than half of companies plan to raise prices by early April. A survey of more than 4,800 firms found that 55% expect prices to increase in the next three months, up from 39% in a similar poll conducted in the latter half of 2024. Three-quarters of companies cited the cost of employing people as their primary financial pressure. The Centre for Retail Research (CRR) has also warned that around 17,350 retail sites are expected to shut down this year. It comes on the back of a tough 2024 when 13,000 shops closed their doors for good, already a 28% increase on the previous year. Professor Joshua Bamfield, director of the CRR said: "The results for 2024 show that although the outcomes for store closures overall were not as poor as in either 2020 or 2022, they are still disconcerting, with worse set to come in 2025." Professor Bamfield has also warned of a bleak outlook for 2025, predicting that as many as 202,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. "By increasing both the costs of running stores and the costs on each consumer's household it is highly likely that we will see retail job losses eclipse the height of the pandemic in 2020."

Drinkers' fury as pub slaps automatic 4% tip on anyone just for buying pints at the bar
The new charge applies to all food and drink ordered at the bar UN-BAR-LIEVABLE Drinkers' fury as pub slaps automatic 4% tip on anyone just for buying pints at the bar Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A PUB has slapped an automatic 4 per cent tip for anyone buying pints at the bar leaving drinkers furious. The new charge means punters at the London boozer will now be paying an extra 30p for a pint of beer or cider. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 A pub has slapped an automatic four per cent tip when ordering at the bar Credit: Getty The Well and Boot at Waterloo Station is now adding an automatic four percent "optional" charge that applies to all food and drink ordered at the bar. Eagle-eyed customers may notice a small sign on display informing them of the new charge, adding that "100 per cent of all tips go to our staff". You won't be able to pay the extra charge in pound notes though as the venue doesn't accept cash either. Cash acceptance campaigner, Martin Quinn, told The Telegraph: "You can understand it if you're sitting down and it's table service, but you're ordering it from the bar. "Where's the service in that?' Mr Quinn paid a visit to The Well and Boot and purchased a half pint of cider for £3.90. He paid the additional charge which made it around 15p more expensive. A typical service charge of around 12.5 per cent is usually added to the bill when customers are seated at a table and served by a waiter in any given pub or restaurant. In the UK, an extra tip on top of the service charge is not usually expected from customers as opposed to the US and some European countries. But businesses are bucking the trend by adding the charge on drinks bought at the bar in pubs. BrewDog beers axed by almost 2,000 pubs across the UK Consumer expert, Martyn James, confirmed as much saying he had seen the practice in a number of locations around the capital. He called the practice "insidious" and added there is little that can be done to stop it. What's worse is that punters may not even notice signs on the bar and if they do, it can often be hidden in the small print, James said. He added that customers should remember that the "key thing" is that the charge is optional. But he appreciated some may feel too awkward to decline the extra tip as it goes against "our British sensibilities". Glendola Leisure, who runs the Well and Boot, was approached for comment. You can buy a pint of Camden IPA for £7.65 at the boozer while an Aspall cider or Guiness will set you back £7.45. You'll have to cough up £12.50 for a cocktail too while a regular-sized glass of sauvignon blanc comes in at £8.50. Eight pubs are closing down every week in Britain amid crippling running costs and tax hikes figure show, as the price of a pint is expected to hit £5 nationwide. The situation in London is even worse with eye-watering £7 pints becoming the norm. Prices have increased even compared to March this year when the average pint cost £4.80 nationwide and £6.75 in London. The Sun recently reported on how a pint of lager could hit £13 in under five years, according to a new study. London Waterloo station is one of the busiest in the UK and saw over 62.5 million passengers in 2023/24.
