Last hope for Nimisha Priya? Sunni leader steps in ahead of execution in Yemen

India Today20 hours ago
Intense efforts are underway to halt the execution of Kerala nurse Nimisha Priya, which is scheduled for tomorrow in Yemen, for the murder of a Yemeni national, news agency PTI reported. A prominent Sunni Muslim leader - Kanthapuram AP Aboobacker Musliyar, who holds the title of Grand Mufti of India - has stepped in for discussions with the family of the victim, Talal Abdo Mahdi, to convince them to accept 'blood money' in exchange for forgiveness.advertisementKanthapuram, 94, who is officially known as Sheikh Abubakr Ahmad, held talks with religious authorities in Yemen. Following that, a meeting has been scheduled in Dhamar today under the leadership of prominent scholar and Sufi leader Sheikh Habib Umar bin Hafiz, at the behest of Kanthapuram. Representatives of Umar bin Hafiz will participate in the meeting with Mahdi's family.Kanthapuram's office said a close relative of the victim, who is also the Chief Justice of the Hodeidah State Court and a member of the Yemeni Shura Council, has arrived in Dhamar to take part in the talks today. He was advised to do the same by Umar bin Hafiz.
"The fact that he is a follower of Sheikh Habib Umar's Sufi order and the son of another prominent Sufi leader offers great hope. Along with persuading the family, he is also expected to meet the Attorney General to initiate urgent efforts to postpone the execution scheduled for tomorrow," PTI reported, quoting the statement by Kanthapuram's office. The statement added that the family's agreement to hold talks with the representatives of Umar bin Hafiz is being seen as a "positive signal towards our efforts to halt the scheduled execution for the time being".The PTI report said that Mahdi's murder is an emotional matter not only for the family, but also among the tribes and the residents of the Dhamar region. Kanthapuram's office said this was the reason why no contact could have been established with the victim's family before. "It was only through Kanthapuram's intervention that communication with the family became possible for the first time."Today's discussion is focused on reaching a final decision about the acceptance of the blood money, PTI reported. The government on Monday told the Supreme Court that there was "nothing much" they could do to secure the release or stop the execution of Nimisha Priya. Attorney General R Venkataramani informed a bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta that the government was trying its best "at a private level" and has contacted some sheikhs and other influential people in Yemen.Nimisha Priya, a nurse from Kerala's Palakkad, was sentenced to death by a local court in Yemen in 2020. Her family's appeal in Yemen's Supreme Court, challenging the decision, was dismissed in 2023. In January this year, Mahdi al-Mashat, President of the rebel Houthis' Supreme Political Council, approved her execution.advertisementShe is currently imprisoned in a jail in Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. As per Yemen's Sharia law, Nimisha Priya can only get a reprieve if the victim's family accepts the blood money or 'diyah', which is USD 1 million financial assistance, offered by her negotiation team.- EndsTune InMust Watch

Maharashtra Shocker: Baby Born On Bus, Then Thrown Out Of Window By Mother

Last Updated: In a shocking incident, the woman allegedly threw the newborn out of the window shortly after his birth on a moving bus in Maharashtra. A 19-year-old woman gave birth to a baby on a running bus in Maharashtra's Parbhani and then allegedly threw the newborn boy out of the window with the help of a man claiming to be her husband, officials said. The baby died after being thrown off the bus on the road. The incident took place at around 6.30 am on the Pathri-Selu Road on Tuesday. The incident came to light when a resident spotted the baby being thrown out of the window, wrapped in a cloth. Upon being confronted later, the couple said that the woman had vomited out of the window. The couple was identified as Ritika Dhere and Altaf Shaikh, who were travelling to Parbhani from Pune in a sleeper coach of Sant Prayag Travels. 'A woman, identified as Ritika Dhere, was travelling to Parbhani from Pune along with Altaf Shaikh, who claimed to be her husband, in the sleeper coach bus of Sant Prayag Travels. During their journey, the woman, who was pregnant, started experiencing labour pains and gave birth to a baby boy. However, the couple put the baby in a piece of cloth and threw him out of the vehicle," news agency PTI quoted a police official as saying. The police said that an alert resident checked what was thrown out of the bus and was 'shocked to find that it was a baby boy". He immediately informed the police about the development. As the police were alerted, a local police patrol team chased the bus and held the couple. The couple confessed to throwing the baby out of the bus and said that they did so as they were unable to raise the child. The police said that the duo hailed from Parbhani and had been living in Pune for the past year and a half. The couple claimed that they were married, but failed to show any documents to back their claim. 'After taking them into custody, the police rushed the woman to a hospital for treatment," the police said. The police have filed a case against the couple at the Pathri police station in Parbhani under Section 94 (3) and (5) of the new BNS law, which deals with hiding a birth by secretly getting rid of the baby's body. The investigation into the matter is underway. The couple has been given a legal notice. SC directs AMU to pay internship stipend arrears to 11 foreign medical graduates within 2 weeks

New Delhi, July 15 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) to pay internship stipend arrears to 11 Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) within two weeks. A bench, comprising Justices Sudhanshu Dhulia and Aravind Kumar, was hearing the plea filed by 11 FMGs who completed their primary medical education from foreign institutions and are undergoing their internship at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh, a constituent college of AMU. The petitioners, represented by Advocate Charu Mathur, challenged the non-payment of stipends to them, while Indian Medical Graduates (IMGs) at AMU receive Rs. 26,300 per month during their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship (CRMI). The bench directed AMU to disburse the stipend of Rs. 26,300 per month to the petitioners within two weeks, ensuring parity with IMGs. As per the plea, FMGs interning at other central universities like Banaras Hindu University (BHU) are also paid the same stipend, whereas FMGs at AMU have not received any stipend, amounting to discrimination. The petition highlighted Clause 3 (Schedule IV) of the National Medical Commission (Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship) Regulations, 2021, which mandates stipend payment to all medical interns as fixed by the appropriate authority. The plea stated that despite having funds allocated under the salary head, with an available balance of Rs 83.31 crore as per AMU's Annual Report for 2023-2024, the university has delayed the stipend payment. The total arrears due to the 11 petitioners for 12 months amounts to Rs. 34,71,600. The petition alleged that AMU has unjustifiably delayed disbursal by repeatedly corresponding with the UGC seeking additional funds, despite the UGC's clarification that stipends are to be paid from the salary grant (OH-36). Notably, the bench led by Justice Sudhanshu Dhulia is also examining the issue of non-payment of stipends to FMGs interning at Mahaveer Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal. Earlier in 2024, the Supreme Court had directed the National Medical Commission (NMC) to submit details regarding stipend status across medical colleges in all states. UNI SNG SS
