World Bank approves US$2.1 billion investment to support Indonesia's growth and clean energy goals

Business Times16-06-2025
[JAKARTA] The World Bank has approved two major investment packages worth a combined US$2.1 billion to support job creation, economic growth, and the expansion of clean energy access across Indonesia.
In a statement on Monday (Jun 16), the World Bank said these are the first initiatives it has approved in support of President Prabowo Subianto's goal of making Indonesia a high-income country by 2045.
The package includes a US$1.5 billion policy-based loan under the Indonesia Productive and Sustainable Investment Development Policy Loan programme, aimed at deepening financial sector reform.
The bank said it will promote the expansion of digital financial services, strengthen credit infrastructure, develop capital markets, and integrate climate and disaster risk considerations into financial planning.
The reforms also target Indonesia's energy transition by easing procurement for renewable technologies through reduced local content requirements.
Complementing these reforms, the second initiative – Sustainable Least-Cost Electrification-2 – focuses on expanding access to renewable energy. The programme aims to deliver electricity to 3.5 million people and support the development of 540 megawatts (MW) of solar and wind power, primarily in Kalimantan and Sumatra.

'With over 3.5 million people gaining access to electricity, the operation is projected to catalyse improved livelihoods and the creation of more and better jobs – including for women-led enterprises,' said Carolyn Turk, World Bank country director for Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
The initiative is expected to cut power generation costs by at least 8 per cent and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 10 per cent in the target regions.
The programme will be financed through a blended package comprising a US$600 million loan from the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), US$12 million in grants from the IBRD Surplus-Funded Livable Planet Fund, and US$16 million in grants from global partners, including the United Kingdom and the Green Climate Fund under the Sustainable Renewables Risk Mitigation Initiative.
Manuela Ferro, World Bank vice-president, East Asia and the Pacific, said 'Through blended finance instruments, the World Bank and partners will also help mobilise an additional US$345 million in private investments to finance solar and wind project, as part of a World Bank Regional Energy programme to create national and regional resilient and interconnected energy grids.'
President Prabowo has set a bold target of achieving 8 per cent annual economic growth and creating millions of new jobs. However, the economy expanded by just 4.87 per cent in the first quarter of this year, the slowest pace since Q3 2021.
The figure is a drop from 5.11 per cent in the same period last year, as Indonesia grapples with slowing consumer spending, weaker trade performance, and uncertainty over potential US tariffs.
The World Bank has lowered its 2025 growth forecast for Indonesia from 5.1 per cent to 4.7 per cent, with a projected growth of 4.8 per cent for 2026.

Goodyear India's Q1 profit falls on weak auto demand

[NEW DELHI] Tyre maker Goodyear India reported a 43.6 per cent fall in first-quarter profit on Monday (Aug 11), hurt by dampened automobile demand. The net profit of US-based Goodyear Tire's Indian unit fell to 141.1 million rupees (S$2.06 million) for the three months ended June 30, from 250.3 million rupees a year ago. Goodyear India, which sells tyres, tubes and flaps, depends on auto sales for a large part of its revenue. Total vehicle sales in the country fell 5.1 per cent in the quarter ending June, compared with 16.4 per cent growth in the same period last year, according to Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers data. The tyremaker's revenue from operations fell 5.1 per cent to 6.56 billion rupees. The company said that increasing adoption of larger rim sizes in vehicles is expected to drive robust sales in the replacement business this year in its latest annual report. Total expenses fell 3 per cent to 6.42 billion rupees, but not enough to boost the bottom line. Rival CEAT reported a fall in June-quarter profit, while MRF is yet to report its quarterly results. Goodyear India's shares are flat on the day and rose 16.8 per cent in the quarter ended June 30. REUTERS

Currency traders focus on Australian dollar and euro for bearish US dollar bets

Options traders are using currencies such as the Australian dollar and euro to express bearish US dollar views after recent disappointing American economic data. The Aussie is being supported by the Reserve Bank of Australia's 'cautious and gradual' stance on easing, as well as improving risk sentiment. The euro's allure has grown from expectations an increase in regional defence spending will support the eurozone economy, and a more hawkish-sounding European Central Bank. Meanwhile, things look rockier for the US dollar as data showed jobs growth missed expectations in July with downward revisions to prior months as well. Standard Chartered Bank has seen 'a lot of interest' in euro-US dollar and Australian dollar-US dollar call options after non-farm payrolls, according to Saurabh Tandon, global head of foreign-exchange options in Singapore. The market is now 'focusing on upcoming events' such as US inflation and the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole symposium, he said. The rise in bullish Aussie and euro options signals growing conviction that the US dollar will weaken further, while also showing that traders are becoming more selective in positioning amid tariff risks and deteriorating data from the world's biggest economy. Some investors had begun to turn bullish on the US dollar as countries started to make trade deals with the US, and this signals a reversal of that momentum. 'Following the EU-US trade deal announcement, we saw directional demand for dollars via options, but that theme was quickly snubbed by the negative non-farm payroll revisions,' said Jamie Sanders, director of foreign-exchange options trading at RBC Capital Markets in London. The trading volume of Australian dollar call options expiring by September, which gain in value if the currency rises versus the greenback, was triple that of bearish put options on Aug 7, data from CME Group's options central limit order book showed. Euro call option volume was 77 per cent larger than that of puts that same day. National Australia Bank has seen a pickup in demand for bullish Australian dollar option wagers, as well as for those on the New Zealand dollar. 'Following the recent non-farm payrolls, we've observed significant activity in AUD/USD and NZD/USD short-dated call options, in anticipation of a busy data week, including the US CPI release and the RBA meeting.' said Con Davelis, Sydney-based head of FX options at the bank.
