Woman offered $2 million for being wrongfully imprisoned for 20 years

An Australian state has offered A$2 million (£970,000) in compensation to a woman wrongfully jailed for two decades over the deaths of her four young children. Kathleen Folbigg, 58, was convicted in 2003 of murdering three of her children and of manslaughter in the death of the fourth. She was later pardoned, freed and had her convictions quashed in 2023, after an independent inquiry found new scientific evidence that the children could have died from natural causes or a genetic mutation. On Thursday, the state's Attorney General Michael Daley said the New South Wales government had made an ex gratia payment to Folbigg after "extensive consideration" of her compensation claim in July 2024. Such a payment is a voluntary gift that does not arise from a legal obligation. Folbigg's lawyer Rhanee Rego called the payment "profoundly unfair and unjust" as it did not reflect the extent of pain and suffering endured by her client. "The sum offered is a moral affront – woefully inadequate and ethically indefensible," Rego said. "The system has failed Kathleen Folbigg once again." She called for an inquiry into how the figure was decided. Folbigg lost not only her children, but 20 of the best years of her life, and continued to feel lasting effects from the trauma, Rego said. The children, aged between 19 days and 18 months, died over a 10-year period from 1989 to 1999. Folbigg was convicted in 2003 based on the prosecution's case that she had smothered each of them, despite a lack of physical supporting evidence. Her sentence of 40 years was later reduced to 30, with a 25-year period of non-parole on appeal. At the time, tabloids had labelled her "the most hated woman in Australia", and a "monstrous mother", among other epithets. A judicial inquiry in 2019 found the evidence reinforced Folbigg's guilt. But a second inquiry led by former chief justice Thomas Bathurst revisited her convictions in 2022 and concluded there was reasonable doubt about her guilt.

Video shows flames tearing through Hollywood police SUV as 911 call captures incident

A marked Hollywood Police SUV caught fire early Thursday morning in a Kendale Lakes neighborhood in Southwest Miami-Dade, prompting an emergency response and sparking an investigation into what caused the blaze. The incident happened around 12:02 a.m. near 4500 SW 139 Court, according to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office. Deputies from the Hammocks district arrived to find the police vehicle engulfed in flames but unoccupied. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) crews responded and were able to extinguish the fire. Video from the scene shows flames shooting through the roof of the cruiser. A 911 dispatch call captured the initial alert: "PD vehicle on fire. Advising a Hollywood PD vehicle. Unknown if it's occupied." No injuries were reported, but investigators said it's still unclear what sparked the fire. Some grass underneath the vehicle was also scorched. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue is leading the investigation. Authorities have not said whether nearby vehicles were damaged.

Walker, who had just left the address in a taxi before police arrived, was stopped by officers on Thornaby Road in Thornaby. He was searched and found in possession of 20 small packages which were £20 cocaine deals, with a total value of £400. A search of the address led officers to seize a range of drug dealing paraphernalia. Smith, 35, from Yarm, and Walker, 37, from Thornaby, were both arrested and later charged with possession with intent to supply cocaine. The police investigation found that Walker would travel to Smith's home in Yarm daily to collect drugs to deal in the Thornaby area. Smith was found to be in possession of a phone hosting the 'deal line' and then would direct Walker where to deal the drugs in Thornaby. Both men pleaded guilty to the charges when they appeared before Teesside Crown Court. On Thursday July 31, Smith was sentenced to four years and one month and Walker three years in prison. Inspector James Allen, from Cleveland Police 's Force Intelligence, said of the case: 'Police are gathering intelligence in relation to drugs operations such as this all the time, to disrupt and take down these drugs networks. It's not a case of whether you will get caught, rather a case of when you will get caught. 'Drugs cause misery to our communities, with dealers preying on the vulnerable for their own greed. If you are dealing drugs, we will catch up with you and you will be put before the courts.' Anyone with information regarding drug dealing in their area, is asked to contact Cleveland Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously either online or by calling 0800 555 111.
