RAM prices are spiking in 2025, and it's not just because of AI

Mint09-07-2025
PC builders, smartphone makers, and gamers are in for a rough ride. Prices for DDR4, DDR5, GDDR6, and LPDDR4X memory are climbing fast in 2025, and the impact is already showing across product categories. But here's the twist: AI isn't the main reason.
Let's start with the numbers. DDR4, still widely used in desktops and laptops, could jump up to 45% this quarter for some modules. DDR5, used in newer machines and servers, is up 3–8%, while GDDR6, the memory in most current graphics cards, is set for a 28–33% hike. Mobile RAM like LPDDR4X? 23–28% higher and still rising.
These aren't minor blips. These increases cut across the board like PC components, smartphones, servers, and GPUs are all going to get more expensive in the coming months.
Contrary to what you might think, this isn't about AI server farms hoarding all the chips. It's about supply, production priorities, and a bit of trade drama.
End of the line for DDR4 and GDDR6: Big names like Samsung, Micron, and SK hynix are winding down older memory formats to push newer, higher-margin products like DDR5, GDDR7, and HBM (High Bandwidth Memory). As a result, DDR4 and GDDR6 are in short supply, and that's driving up prices.
Production cuts: After months of oversupply, manufacturers scaled back output to stabilize margins. That, combined with the phaseout of legacy memory types, has left distributors scrambling.
Geopolitics: With US–China trade tensions back in the spotlight and new tariff threats, tech brands are stockpiling memory. That's making things even tighter for the open market.
Peak season rush: It's the typical seasonal restocking cycle. Everyone, from phone makers to laptop brands, is trying to lock in inventory before prices go higher.
AI is definitely consuming memory, but mostly HBM and newer formats. What we're seeing here is more about production strategy than raw demand. The biggest hikes are in formats that AI infrastructure isn't even using heavily.
If you're building or upgrading a PC with DDR4 or a GDDR6 GPU, be prepared to pay more. Mid-range phones might quietly get more expensive too, especially those using LPDDR4X. Even entry-level laptops could start feeling overpriced.
For now, the outlook is shaky. Prices may stay elevated until either demand eases or manufacturers ramp up production again. Ironically, some suppliers are even considering restarting DDR4 production, just to cash in on the demand.
So if you've been sitting on that RAM upgrade or GPU purchase, this might be your last shot at a decent price for a while.

Cabinet approves ₹18,500 crore semiconductor, infrastructure projects

NEW DELHI: The Union cabinet on Tuesday approved key manufacturing and infrastructure projects worth approximately ₹ 18,500 crore. Among the approvals are four new semiconductor projects in Odisha, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh; a 700 MW Tato-II hydroelectric project in Arunachal Pradesh; and the expansion of the Lucknow metro over the next five years. With Tuesday's approvals, the total number of semiconductor projects officially sanctioned by the Centre's India Semiconductor Mission has risen to 10, since Micron's memory chip packaging plant was approved in Sanand, Gujarat, in June 2023. Of these, four projects, including India's only modernized chip fab by Tata Electronics, are located in Gujarat, two in Odisha, and one each in Assam, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Andhra Pradesh. Industry stakeholders noted that while the four new projects may not involve large capital outlays, they are strategically important as part of efforts to consolidate investments under the India Semiconductor Mission's first tranche of nearly $10 billion. The four newly approved proposals—SiCSem, Continental Device India Pvt Ltd (CDIL), 3D Glass Solutions Inc., and Advanced System in Package (ASIP) Technologies—carry a cumulative investment of around ₹ 4,600 crore and are expected to generate employment for approximately 2,034 skilled professionals, according to an official statement. A silicon carbide semiconductor plant will be set up in Bhubaneswar by SiCSem Pvt Ltd. 'The SicSem project in Odisha is an integrated semiconductor project, which means that it will have both a compound semiconductor fabrication plant, as well as a chip testing and packaging unit. The second Odisha project with HIPS is an advanced packaging plant for glass substrates, which are applicable in crucial industries. The applicant is also making the substrates innovatively, in order to maximize yield—which makes the project very interesting,' said a senior government official close to the developments. Compound semiconductors are made from silicon combined with other elements. They require different fabrication techniques and are primarily used in strategic industrial applications such as space launches, high-intensity sectors like automotive and railways, and resilient systems including power grids and oil rigs. Heterogenous Integration Packaging Solutions (HIPL) Pvt Ltd will establish a vertically integrated advanced packaging and embedded glass substrate facility in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, with a planned annual capacity of approximately 69,600 glass panel substrates, 50 million assembled units, and 13,200 3DHI modules, according to the official statement. Advanced System in Package Technologies (ASIP) will establish a semiconductor manufacturing unit in Andhra Pradesh under a technology tie-up with APACT Co. Ltd, South Korea, with an annual capacity of 96 million units. The manufactured products will serve applications in mobile phones, set-top boxes, automobile systems, and other electronic products. 'ASIP's Andhra Pradesh project is also an advanced packaging project for industrial chips, while Continental's project—the smallest of the lot—is a brown-field expansion of India's oldest existing and running chip testing plant. Overall, the projects come to add significant depth to the overall semiconductor ecosystem,' the official added. Separately, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) approved an investment of ₹ 8,146.21 crore for the construction of the Tato-II Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Shi Yomi district, Arunachal Pradesh, with an estimated completion timeline of 72 months. The 700 MW project (4 units of 175 MW each) is expected to generate 2,738.06 million units of energy. It will be implemented through a joint venture between the North Eastern Electric Power Corp. Ltd. (NEEPCO) and the Arunachal Pradesh government. The Centre will provide ₹ 458.79 crore in budgetary support for enabling infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and transmission lines, along with ₹ 436.13 crore as central financial assistance towards the state's equity share, according to another official statement. Arunachal Pradesh will benefit from 12% free power and an additional 1% allocation towards the Local Area Development Fund (LADF), it said. This development aligns with the government's goal to reach 500 GW of non-fossil fuel power generation capacity by 2030 as part of its energy transition and net-zero carbon emission targets. In another significant infrastructure boost, the Union cabinet approved Phase-1B of the Lucknow Metro Rail Project, which includes an 11.16-kilometer corridor with 12 stations, seven underground and five elevated. Once operational, Lucknow's metro network will expand to 34 km. The project has an estimated cost of ₹ 5,801 crore.

Samsung edges ahead of Apple in super-premium smartphone segment: IDC report

India's smartphone market shipped about 70 million devices in the first half of 2025 with a 0.9 per cent year-over-year growth, according to International Data Corporation (IDC). According to IDC's Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, the second quarter of the year reported growth of 7.3 per cent year-over-year by shipping 37 million smartphones. In what can be called a notable shift in India's smartphone market in the first half of the year, Samsung surpassed Apple in the super-premium segment, devices priced around $800 (about Rs 70,000 and above). According to IDC data, Samsung overtook Apple for the leadership position at 49 per cent and 48 per cent share, respectively. Overall, the super-premium segment grew by over 15.8 per cent, and its share remained stable at 7 per cent. The report revealed that iPhone 16, Galaxy S25/24 Ultra, S25, and iPhone 16 Plus were the key models. Although narrow, Samsung's lead marks a significant milestone, as this is the first time ever that the South Korean smartphone maker has surpassed Apple in the lead in India's ultra-premium category. Based on the report, this growth was largely propelled by the remarkable sales of Samsung Galaxy models such as the S25/S24 Ultra and S25. On the other hand, Apple's position was consolidated by the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus models. Even after falling behind Samsung in the segment overall, Apple's iPhone 16 emerged as the single best-selling smartphone in India in the first half of 2025, accounting for four per cent of all shipments. This indicates that while Samsung got more super premium units collectively, individual consumers continued to favour iPhone 16. According to experts, this shows a competitive and evenly matched high-end market in India, which is also one of the world's fastest-growing smartphone regions. IDC data also shows that India's overall market grew by a meagre one per cent year over year in the first half. In simple words, the first half of the year saw Samsung take a slim but meaningful lead over Apple in India's super-premium smartphone segment. Samsung's performance is also being attributed to its Galaxy S25 lineup, introduced earlier this year, with advanced AI capabilities and sleek design, which seem to have resonated with consumers. On the other hand, iPhone 16's strong showing suggests Apple's continued appeal in the same segment.
