Portland firefighters called to remove titanium smart ring from woman's finger
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Fire & Rescue firefighters were called to perform an emergency ring removal on Feb. 15 after a woman's finger swelled up around an Oura smart ring that was too tough to remove with basic tools.

A special firefighter crew was called to an urgent care center in East Portland around noon Saturday after hospital staff and an initial firefighter crew that responded to the emergency were unable to remove the ring, Portland Fire & Rescue spokesperson Rick Graves told KOIN.
'The initial 911 call was taken by a truck company near the Lloyd Center, but it turned out their equipment wasn't robust enough to address this incident,' Graves said. 'So one of the heavy rescues in the city responded to assist.'
The ring's titanium shell and electronic circuitry were too tough to cut with a spinning ring-cutter, PF&R said. The unique job required a diamond-tipped blade only carried by two PF&R crews.
'The outer shell of titanium and inner componentry were far too much for a traditional hand spinning ring-cutter,' PF&R shared on social media. '[Firefighters used] a diamond-tipped blade on a handheld rotary tool along with some modified silverware to act as a protective shield and a little water to keep everything cooled off.'

It's unclear what caused the woman's hand to swell around the smart ring. PF&R firefighters successfully removed the ring with the diamond-tipped equipment.

Small plane carrying six crashes off the coast of Sunset Cliffs
A small plane with six people aboard crashed into the ocean about 3 miles off Sunset Cliffs Sunday afternoon, prompting a search involving several agencies. The Coast Guard received the report at 12:50 p.m. and began searching the debris field with several assets, including a Jayhawk helicopter, a C-27 airplane, the Cutter Sea Otter and two smaller boats, said Petty Officer Charlie Valor. None of the people believed to be on board had been found by early evening as the search continued, Coast Guard officials said. The plane was a Cessna 414, which is a pressurized, twin-engine aircraft designed to carry six to eight passengers, according to officials. San Diego lifeguards initially assisted with the search, then were called off after it became clear the plane went down in water that is probably 200 feet deep or more, a spokesperson said. 'The U.S. Coast Guard alerted San Diego fire department lifeguards after receiving reports from vessels of a large splash approximately three miles off Sunset Cliffs,' said Candace Hadley, a spokesperson for San Diego Fire-Rescue. 'Lifeguards responded with several rescue vessels (boats and some personal watercraft), who located an oil sheen and some debris on the water,' Hadley said. She said lifeguards requested additional support from the Coast Guard because of the depth of the water being searched. The Coast Guard has since assumed responsibility for search, rescue and recovery operations. 'Initial debris recovered by lifeguards have been turned over to Coast Guard authorities. Our Triton vessel is currently on standby in case there is any additional need for assistance,' she said. The high-performance Triton is equipped with hoses and can be used to fight fires. This is the second private plane to crash in the San Diego area in the past 2 1/2 weeks. On May 22, a Cessna 550 Citation II jet crashed into a Murphy Canyon neighborhood, damaging a four-plex in the military housing area and setting 20 vehicles on fire. Six people on board the jet — the pilot and five passengers — were killed in the crash. Miraculously, only a few people suffered minor injuries on the ground. The FAA and NTSB are investigating the cause of that crash. Officials noted the plane was heading to Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in Kearny Mesa on a foggy evening when the plane clipped a transmission line about 120 feet in the air. In that incident, the plane had departed from Teterboro, N.J., then stopped in Wichita, Kan., before heading on to San Diego. With Sunday's crash, it was not immediately clear where the plane had taken off from or its intended destination.

54 shipwrecked migrants rescued from oil platform in the Mediterranean, where one woman gave birth
Over 50 migrants were headed to the Italian island of Lampedusa Sunday after a charity ship rescued them from an abandoned oil platform in the Mediterranean, where one woman gave birth, according to a rescue group. The vessel Astral, operated by the Spain-based NGO Open Arms, rescued the 54 people overnight, the group said in a statement. The migrants had been trapped on the oil platform for three days after their rubber boat shipwrecked following their departure from Libya on Tuesday, Open Arms said. On Friday, one of the migrants gave birth to a boy, while another woman had given birth days before. Two other young children were among the group, Open Arms said. The group released images on social media, showing rescuers helping transfer the migrants from the oil platform to the Astral. Over 50 migrants were headed to the Italian island of Lampedusa after a charity ship rescued them from an abandoned oil platform in the Mediterranean, where one woman gave birth. Open Arms Later Sunday, the charity said that, following the rescue of those on the oil platform, the Astral came upon another 109 people, including four people in the water. That group, which included 10 children, had also departed from Libya, it said. The Louise Michel, a former French navy vessel, was transporting the migrants from Lampedusa to a safe port in Sicily, Open Arms said. Doña Ana County Fire Rescue extinguish residential fire in Organ
EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — Doña Ana County Fire Rescue (DAFR), with the help of the Las Cruces Fire Department, extinguished a residential structure fire Sunday morning, June 8, in Organ, New Mexico. According to DAFR, the call came in at 9:30 a.m. on June 8, along the 6800 block of Aurora Place in Organ, roughly 13 miles west of Las Cruces. When fire crews arrived, an RV was 'fully engulfed in flames that spread to a nearby mobile unit being used as a fixed residence,' Doña Ana County Fire said.
