
Uber Freight CEO joins self-driving truck company Waabi, says era of autonomous big rigs on U.S. roads is here
The move, Ron says, is based on his belief that the era of autonomous big rigs on the roads at scale is here, with the freight industry to be transformed by the economics with driverless technology in the semi cab.
"The first decade of my career in logistics was building Uber Freight, putting the rails in place to usher in the era of digitalization for logistics," Ron said. "It's time to focus on the most fundamental shift of the next decade, which is automation. I can't think of something that will be as helpful to the next era of logistics and innovation and how goods are being moved. The technology is now here," he added.
Waabi expects fully driverless trucks to be handling freight routes across the U.S. Southwest by the end of the year. The region was chosen as the first area of the nation to deploy the technology at scale due to the massive amount of freight that travels in the Sun Belt, from states including Texas and Arizona to California, and the lack of severe weather conditions like snow and ice (removing one variable for the autonomous technology to navigate). But Ron said the goal is to cover al of North America with driverless freight trucks over the next five years.
Ron will remain chairman of Uber Freight, with Rebecca Tinucci, current head of Uber's electrification strategy and former Tesla charging business leader, taking over as CEO.
Ron grew Uber Freight to a $5 billion annual revenue business over the past decade, working with one-third of Fortune 500 shippers, according to the company, and managing close to $20 billion in freight overall for clients including Colgate, Nestle, and Anheuser-Busch InBev.
The ties between Ron and Waabi founder and CEO Raquel Urtasun (the two executives have known each other for a decade) — and between Waabi and Uber — are longstanding. Urtasun worked at Uber in an advanced technology unit before founding Waabi. Uber is a major investor in her company, and Uber Freight has been a key partner in testing Waabi's autonomous trucking technology on the roads, with a program underway in Texas since 2023 and an existing goals of deploying across billions of miles. Commercial loads are currently carrier by Waabi trucks between Dallas and Houston.
"Over the last four years, we've focused on the product development and R&D, and now we're entering the commercialization phase," said Urtasun, who added that Ron will be focused on the "go-to-market strategy, foundational partnerships such as Uber Freight that push the company to the next level, new partnerships, and positioning the business to scale.
Waabi ranked No. 35 on this year's CNBC Disruptor 50 list.
Currently, Waabi's approach has included drivers in the cabs as part of its testing phase. But Ron said by the end of the year, there will be no driver on board the vehicles. "It has been four years since Waabi's inception and it's go time," he said. "We start with specific routes and scale fast across multiple customers," he said, including Uber Freight.
Truck OEMs, such as Volvo (with which Waabi already has a deal) are already making the investments, "gearing up and leaning all in," Ron said. Now, he added, "It's about the people who buy the trucks."
Ron expects a relatively fast adoption cycle — among both logistics firms looking to replenish freight fleets and shippers, such as major retailers, with their own trucking assets and operations. Current constraints in the freight trucking sector will serve as tailwinds to adoption, he said. Traditional freight trucks can move cargo seven to eight hours a day, with autonomous trucks able to more than double that with the costs associated with a driver, and with a better safety profile and greater fuel efficiency.
In five years time, Ron says, driverless freight trucks will be "a common site across the U.S. in the supply chain, and especially in the Sunbelt corridors."
While much of the public focus with self-driving remains on the novelty of Waymos and Tesla robotaxis (Texas and Arizona are key test markets for these companies as well), the Waabi executives say the costs in the freight trucking industry make a much stronger case for the deployment at scale.
"Costs always come down with scale," Ron said, and he contends that autonomous freight will allow customers to recoup their investment "faster than any other investment in a trucking fleet."
For truck drivers, the jobs won't disappear overnight, and with an average age of a truck driver in the U.S. around 55, according to Ron, the next decade will provide the time for those already in the career to remain in their jobs. The Waabi executives do expect more driving jobs in the future to be within last-mile delivery, which is a more complex task for autonomous systems to master, and for their to be emergence of new technician jobs related to autonomous freight operations.
They also noted that there is a longstanding shortage of truck drivers in the U.S., a sign that long haul is not a highly sought career option. "No one wants to be a long haul trucker," said Urtasun. "This is not something humans should be doing, but as the labor shifts it will done over a period of time, so not a massive disruption," she added.
Self-driving regulation is still primarily handled at the state level, one reason Texas has featured in Waabi's early days, but Urtasun said a recent meeting she attended with Department of Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy indicated a "willingness to get a federal framework to enable a faster, more simple path to commercialize this technology."
"All the benefits are clear and the U.S. wants to maintain the leadership position here, and this administration wants to double down in making that possible, but it does remain state-by-state policy," she said.
Waabi refers to itself as a "physical AI" company, with the ultimate goal of having its systems deployed beyond trucks, whether in robotaxis, warehouse robots or humanoid robots. "It's clear to us that at the right time we will do more than trucks," Urtasun said.
But the goal right now, she said, is to build the autonomous trucking business to scale and grow the revenue stream upon commercialization. There are no current plans to pursue an initial public offering. "Lots of people are courting Waabi for our next series, but our capital efficiency enables us to not need to raise capital. We don't have plans now to IPO," she said. "The first mission is to bring the solution to market," she added.
In addition, to Uber, Waabi is backed by Khosla Ventures, Nvidia, Volvo Group Venture Capital, and Porsche Automobil, among others.

I tested Tesla and Waymo's robotaxis in Austin — only one felt ready for the future
The robotaxi rodeo has arrived in Austin. I was walking down South Congress Avenue in Downtown Austin on a Wednesday afternoon when a fleet of Waymos pulled up at a stoplight, like a little robotaxi posse. This is a fairly new sight. Alphabet's Waymo, which has more than 100 robotaxis in Austin, began offering paid rides through Uber's platform in March, joining several other US cities. Tesla rolled out a pilot launch of its robotaxi in Austin in June. Tesla CEO Elon Musk said in an April earnings call that the service will start with 10 to 20 Model Ys. So far, the service is limited to invite-only and includes a human safety monitor in every car. Musk said in an X post on Sunday that the service will be "open access" by September. I flew to the Texas capital in July to compare the two services head-to-head, examining factors like app experience, pick-up times, drop-off location accuracy, and passenger experience. In May, my colleague Alistair Barr and I pitted Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system against Waymo's fully autonomous driver. Musk dismissed that comparison because FSD assumes a human is always ready to take over. This time, I could do a true 1:1 comparison of the companies' robotaxis. My experience with Tesla's Robotaxi shows how far the company has come with its FSD technology since it debuted in 2020. Still, I ran into issues with Tesla's Robotaxi that made me feel it is not yet ready for the masses. A spokesperson for Tesla did not respond to a request for comment. A Waymo spokesperson declined to comment. Here's what happened. The test Tesla's Robotaxi operates with a limited number of cars in Austin — and, more recently, in San Francisco, where human drivers sit behind the wheel. In Austin, Waymo's fleet is managed by Uber. It's part of Waymo's strategy to explore different fleet operators outside its own company. In this case, users hail the robotaxi through the Uber app. Just like in San Francisco, Austin's Waymo fleet consists of retrofitted Jaguar I-PACE SUVs. It has five lidar sensors, six radars, and 29 cameras. Tesla's Robotaxis have eight external cameras. Business Insider's Grace Kay previously reported that the Model Y Robotaxis have some modifications, including self-cleaning cameras and a telecommunications unit that connects with remote operators. The comparison includes multiple rides that I took on July 16 and 17. I took five rides in Tesla's Robotaxi during the early mornings and afternoons. I went on eight Waymo rides over the course of a full day for the test. My time with Tesla's Robotaxi was limited to the availability of my rider companion, Vu Kong, a local Tesla investor who manages a dental group. He received an early Robotaxi invite and graciously took the time out of his workweek to bring me along for a few rides. First up: Waymo One of the observations I've consistently seen from Waymo is that the autonomous driving technology is safe but assertive, whether that's in San Francisco or Los Angeles. In Austin, I saw an even bolder Waymo. One notable moment was when the Waymo was trying to pull out of a parking lot by making a left turn against oncoming cars coming from my left. It was during rush hour, and traffic was packed. A bus to my right had stopped, so oncoming cars to my left had started to form a line. The Waymo decided to squeeze through the space it had and carefully inched forward — almost as if it was telling the other cars, "I'm going to make my left turn, darn it." The Waymos got my pickup and drop-off location exactly right every ride. There are times in San Francisco when a Waymo might pick me up about a block away from where I am. I took multiple Waymo rides from early morning hours to Austin's 5 p.m. peak traffic time. The average price across eight rides was $10.69. The average pick-up time was about seven minutes. In Austin, users must opt in for the autonomous vehicle option in their Uber app. There is no way to specifically request a robotaxi for each ride. Uber will instead pair you with whatever vehicle is on the most time-efficient route — human or robot, according to a Waymo spokesperson. The spokesperson said Uber will likely send a human driver if the best route requires a highway. Waymo is testing on highways in SF, LA, and Phoenix, but public riders don't have access yet, the spokesperson said. I ended up canceling 47 Uber rides in my attempt to hail a Waymo so that I could recreate a route I took in Tesla's Robotaxi from Austin's South Congress area to the Crestview neighborhood up north, about nine miles away. I did not end up connecting with a Waymo for that specific route. Normally, I don't mind human Uber drivers. My main concern is getting from point A to B as quickly, safely, and cheaply as possible. For folks who want a robotaxi or would prefer a ride to themselves, I can see a scenario in the future where people will go straight to Tesla's Robotaxi app instead of Uber — that is, once it's available to the general public and Tesla removes its safety driver. Tesla time Tesla's Robotaxi fleet is made up of the latest Model Y, which I found to be a smooth, comfortable ride. I've hailed Teslas through Uber and Lyft that were driven by humans. During those rides, I almost always got carsick. When riding in Tesla's Robotaxi, I did not get carsick at all (reaffirming a personal theory: Some human drivers don't know how to drive a Tesla). During my rides, the Tesla's autonomous driving system drove at a reasonable speed, maintained a safe distance from other cars and cyclists, and recognized construction zones. Three incidents, though, required us to connect with a remote Tesla support agent — two of which happened on my first ride. The first intervention happened as the Robotaxi was trying to pull out of a parking lot. We were waiting for about a minute when a message popped up on the rear center screen: "Our team has identified an issue and is working to resolve it." A remote "support agent" at Tesla soon connected with us. "It looks like the vehicle isn't making any progress. Is everything OK?" the agent said. After explaining that we appeared to be stuck, the remote agent said they'd help us out. We were soon on our way. The next intervention came about 20 minutes later, after we changed the route mid-journey. As we were heading down Fruth Street, Tesla's Robotaxi began to approach a road clearly marked with two "Do Not Enter" signs. This is where I realized the importance of having a human safety monitor inside every car — and why the monitors appear to be on a strict do-not-talk-to-the-riders policy. Chatting might make the ride feel less awkward, but they're actually performing an important job, which is paying close attention to what's happening on the roads. As the car moved forward, the safety monitor touched a button on the center console screen to stop the ride. We were heading down an empty one-way road. A remote support agent connected again, and the Robotaxi began a three-point turn before slamming the brakes. There were no other notable incidents on that ride. The third intervention came the next day. Kong and I wanted to take the car to the very edge of Tesla's geofence, which establishes the boundaries of the Robotaxi service. When we changed the destination toward the end of our ride, the Tesla started to take us on a new route that briefly put us outside the geofence. A remote support agent called to let us know that they had to reroute the car so that it wouldn't go outside the digital boundaries. I was at least comforted to see how responsive the remote agents were. Tesla's Robotaxi also avoided the highway during my rides. It's unclear if Tesla is avoiding them for public riders for now, just as with Waymo. During my fourth ride to North Austin, Kong, a five-year resident of Texas, noticed that the Robotaxi was taking a longer route to a destination that should've been an 18-minute trip if the car had taken the 35 highway or MoPac Expressway, according to Google Maps. Traffic was light to moderate during the times I took Tesla's Robotaxi. There were no issues with pick-up or drop-off locations. Pick-up times were mostly around 10 minutes, but there was one case where the pick-up time was nearly half an hour. Tesla hasn't specified how many cars it has added since it expanded the coverage area, but during the company's latest earnings call on July 23, Ashok Elluswamy, Tesla's VP of AI software, said it had a "handful" of vehicles on the roads. I didn't have direct access to the Robotaxi app, but based on what I saw from Kong, it appeared easy to use. The app glitched once and showed that a Robotaxi was on the way, even though we had just been dropped off at our destination. Kong told me that the app can be a bit buggy. The verdict As in our May test between Waymo and Tesla FSD (Supervised), Waymo won. While impressive, Tesla's Robotaxi is still a work in progress. I never felt in danger while riding — but it didn't quite feel like the well-oiled service that Waymo delivers. The intervention I experienced when Tesla's Robotaxi started driving down a one-way road showed why a safety monitor is still necessary. They're not passive passengers, but constantly watching for issues. That's not to suggest Waymo is perfect. Even after one hundred million autonomously driven miles, Waymo still makes mistakes. A previous Business Insider analysis of Waymo's progress in California found that between January and March 2025, when it provided more than 1.8 million rides in the Golden State, Waymo saw 7 collisions per 100,000 rides. Still, the company has published data showing a significant safety advantage over the average human driver. Earlier this year, Waymo said it's providing 250,000 paid trips a week. Waymo's achievement didn't happen overnight. Seven years ago, Alphabet launched an early rider program, giving a limited number of vetted riders access to Waymos with safety drivers inside the car. Musk said Tesla's ramp-up will be faster — a thousand robotaxis in Austin by the end of the year. Still, I'm more interested in another milestone: When will they remove the in-car safety monitor?

Cancer hit this couple's finances. Should they cash in RRSPs to maximize OAS and GIS?
Q. Does it make sense to cash in registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs) to maximize Old Age Security (OAS) and Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) payments? A serious cancer illness in 2014 caused us to lose our way financially. My husband Ron and I are both 62 years of age now and Ron has $125,000 in an RRSP but no tax-free savings account (TFSA). Ron expects about $8,000 annually from Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and I expect about $6,400 annually and we expect to retire at age 65 in 2028. We have no other retirement income. Should we cash in RRSPs by December 2028 (Ron's and my retirement date) and pay the taxes now so we qualify for GIS at retirement? Any RRSP money after tax paid on the withdrawal would go into TFSAs. Ronald's annual employment income for 2022, 2023 and 2024 will be about $50,000. I have a small income of $8,000 annually through part-time work. We are more than able to live on our CPP, OAS and the GIS (amount based on our CPP income of $14,400), withdrawing about $5,000 annually from the TFSA money we build up from the RRSP transfers. We will sell our home when Ron turns 71 with expected equity of $250,000. We expect a small inheritance of $80,000 by 2030. —Elise and Ron in Moncton FP Answers: Elise and Ron, I love your thinking on this. My only caution is that you don't fixate on one strategy and miss better strategies. I like to step back, look at the big picture, and run different solutions to test different ideas. This allows us to see, and understand, why one strategy is superior to another. I am not suggesting your thoughts are not the way to go, just that you want to be sure, or as sure as you can be, especially when you are about to put the RRSP sell order in knowing you will have to pay a lot of tax. To get a sense of how all the pieces may come together I modelled four different solutions: Do nothing now and at age 65 draw on your RRSPs as needed. Draw down on your RRSP so it is gone by the year you turn 65 and add the proceeds to your TFSAs so you can maximize the GIS. This is your thought. Don't touch your RRSP until age 65 and then convert it to a RRIF and withdraw it all, splitting the effective 'pension income' between the two of you to lower taxes. Delay your CPP to age 70 to get the higher CPP. Between age 65 and 70 replace your CPP with RRIF withdrawals which will lead to lower RRIF minimum withdrawals after age 70. In all cases I assumed you will add what you can of your inheritance and the proceeds of the home sale to your TFSA. The accompanying table lays out the results. As you can see from the table your intuition is correct if you are using your final net worth at age 91 as your measure. It is better to deplete your RRSP by the year you turn 64. This approach gives you the lowest taxable income and the highest GIS. The amount of GIS a lower income person or couple will receive is based on net income minus OAS. Also, money drawn from a TFSA is not considered income, which I am sure is why you suggested drawing from your RRSP and building your TFSA. It is interesting to note that the solution with the highest net worth is also the solution paying the highest amount of tax. It is not shown in the table but for solutions No. 2 to No. 4 all the tax was paid in the first three years while Ron was working. In solution No. 4 when CPP is delayed to age 70 the only tax paid is on Ron's income. There is no tax owing on future RRIF withdrawals because of your low income. Now look at the breakaway age. This is when your net worth in solutions No. 2 to No. 4 becomes larger than your net worth in solution No. 1. You will notice that by delaying CPP there is no net worth advantage until age 90. This is partially because the larger CPP income reduces the amount of GIS received. In many cases lower income households may be better off starting CPP at 65 or earlier. Finally, you are ending up with a large net worth at age 91 which means you could and likely will be spending more. I have done a preliminary overview, but I would recommend you take a little more time to think about your cash flow and spending. For example, what will you do for housing once you sell your home? Changes in cash flow may point to a different solution. Will an overpayment of capital gains on an estate be returned to beneficiaries? How does John decide whether to sell or lease his grain farm before he retires next spring? I hope you remain cancer free and enjoy a healthy retirement. The West Wing has created a scorecard that rates 553 companies and trade associations on how hard they worked to support and promote President Trump's "One Big Beautiful Bill," a senior White House official tells Axios. Why it matters: Trump works transactionally, and companies have rushed to pay demonstrative homage. Now, senior aides will have data to consult when considering corporate requests. The unusual spreadsheet fits this administration's proclivity for micromanaging companies and administering loyalty tests. Factors in the rating include social media posts, press releases, video testimonials, ads, attendance at White House events, and other engagement related to "OB3," as the megabill is known internally. The organizations' support is ranked as strong, moderate or low. Axios has learned that "examples of good partners" on the White House list include Uber, DoorDash, United, Delta, AT&T, Cisco, Airlines for America and the Steel Manufacturers Association. How it works: The data, which is being circulated to White House senior staff, will be used as a reality check when someone from K Street calls and says, for instance, that they'd "love to catch up — was so great working with you to pass the big, beautiful bill." The ranking "helps us see who really goes out and helps vs. those who just come in and pay lip service," the official said. Separately, a running list on the White House website tracks announcements of "Trump Effect" investments in U.S. manufacturing, production, and innovation. What's next: We're told this is an evolving document, with the organizations' engagement on other presidential initiatives to be added. "If groups/companies want to start advocating more now for the tax bill or additional administration priorities, we will take that into account in our grading," the official said. Zoom in: Companies on the White House "good" list took a variety of approaches to supporting the megabill, often singling out specific benefits for their industry. DoorDash deliverer Maliki Krieski of Ripon, Wisconsin, wore a red " DoorDash Mom" T-shirt as she stood behind President Trump at a White House event promoting the bill the week before final votes. She later plugged the "no tax on tips" provision in a Fox News Digital interview. "No Tax on Tips is now law," Uber cheered on a blog for drivers. "No Tax on Tips, first proposed by President Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign, is a proposal to change how tips are taxed. Now that this has become law, you won't pay federal income taxes on your tips that are reported to the IRS on a 1099 form." Chuck Robbins — CEO of Cisco, who's also chair of Business Roundtable, the association of top U.S. CEOs — posted on X: "Encouraged by the House #reconciliation package's corporate tax provisions. By preserving a competitive rate, retaining FDII, & restoring immediate R&D expensing, this bill will strengthen America's pro-growth tax system — allowing US companies to better innovate & invest at home." AT&T announced"plans to more quickly build fiber infrastructure thanks to pro-investment policies in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act passed by Congress." Airlines for America (A4A), which represents major U.S. airlines, issued a statement saying it "strongly supports the One Big Beautiful Bill Act and applauds the inclusion of a critical investment of $12.5 billion in modernizing the Federal Aviation Administration's air traffic facilities, systems and infrastructure."
