NSW Waratahs v British and Irish Lions live: score, commentary, updates

Times05-07-2025
We need a bit more atmosphere at these games. It's all been a bit flat and friendly. Hopefully the more raucous travellers are on their way and up for it. A mild boo greets Mack Hansen's name, as it is read out by the stadium announcer. Not quite the thunderdome yet.
We were chatting last night, our tourists, and realised that we have a month left in Australia (Will Kelleher writes). With the whirlwind start to the tour it feels like we've been here a month already! Two games, three cities, two sets of laundry done, and two 50+ point wins for the Lions. What state will they be in when they return to Sydney in the final week of the tour? Will we have a series winner already, or will it all be in the balance?
There is so much left to go until that point, so many fascinating twists and turns. Let's just hope the Lions don't go three-for-three for horrible injuries against the Waratahs tonight.
Not sure that it's up to the Lions head coach to tells fans to cut the 'nonsense' regarding the selection of Owen Farrell. Free speech and all that…
The Waratahs' 2025 season has been powered by some seriously talented stars. Captain and powerhouse No8 Langi Gleeson has led the charge with dynamite performances, snagging Player of the Year honors. Young speedster Max Jorgensen has dazzled fans with his lightning pace and tryscoring flair, while former NRL ace Joseph Suaalii brings raw power and versatility when fit. Front-row beast Angus Bell has bulldozed scrums, and crafty centre Tom Banks has been a creative spark in midfield. But, as with all Lions tours, not all of them are available to take on the men in red tonight. So, the Waratahs will have to dig deep into their bench and rely on fresh faces to try and keep the Lions at bay — no easy task, but hey, that's rugby!
In 2025, the Waratahs experienced a season of highs and lows, ultimately falling short of play-off contention. Under new coach Dan McKellar, the former Leicester Tigers main man, they began the Super Rugby Pacific campaign with promise, securing victories against the Western Force and the Brumbies, including a notable 28–23 win that ended a 13-match losing streak against the Brumbies. A standout moment came with a remarkable 102-metre team try in a 21–14 upset over the Chiefs.
However, inconsistency marred their season. Heavy defeats to the Hurricanes and Moana Pasifika highlighted defensive vulnerabilities, and a crushing 46–6 loss to the Blues dashed their playoff hopes. Despite these setbacks, the emergence of young talents like Max Jorgensen and the return of Joseph Suaalii injected excitement into the squad. While the season ended without finals qualification, the Waratahs showcased glimpses of potential that could bode well for the future.

A couple of Ireland behemoths have been chatting before the game in Sydney.
'Everyone wants to put their hand up for tests but at the moment we just want a good team performance,' Tadhg Beirne, tonight's captain, said. 'We have shown massive improvement each week and the goal now is to improve on Wednesday.
'Maro [Itoje] is an incredible leader and player, it's no surprise the performance he's producing at the moment. If I can do half of what he does I'll be doing alright.'
And also Josh van der Flier.
'It's been pretty busy, the first time since I was in school that I am playing three games in a week. A good few of us watched on Wednesday and there is definitely a bit of, not pressure, but expectation tonight to do the same.
'The Tahs are a very good set up, they will be well glued together after a season together. We had prepared for [Pollock injury], Andy had said at very start, it's the nature of these tours, backing up games, everyone was ready to fill in at any stage.'
Pollock is a big draw card in Australia (Stuart Barnes writes). The expats of Paddington and Bondi Junction are mightily miffed at his late withdrawal. Oh well, at least he won't end up forcing me to change my writing plans and muse on the man of the moment…even writers need flexible plans. Like Finn Russell on the field. On the match: this is not a vintage `Tahs team and the Lions should be judged solely on quality of performance, not the result.
Anyway, Kate, Mike, Ollie and Matt and his drinking buddies, sorry about Pollock…

Andy Farrell has been shedding light on the Henry Pollock injury.
'Henry has a slight problem, nothing too serious,' he told Sky Sports. 'So we reshuffle back to a 5-3 bench.
'We are in the thick of it now, the games are rolling. We are hoping to see improvement. What does that look like? Game after game lads are stepping up. We got a reaction from the Force, and we want to see that again tonight.
'It's a special night for those three (Hugo Keenan, Ben White, Blair Kinghorn) and their families so we've got to make sure we do them justice. It's important that they show each other how collective they are as a group, trying to connect as a team.'
Andy Farrell has told British & Irish Lions fans to cut the 'nonsense' around his son, Owen, having called him up for a fourth tour (Will Kelleher writes).
Owen Farrell, 33, will replace the injured Elliot Daly, 32, who broke his arm on Wednesday against Queensland Reds and then flew home on Thursday from Sydney. Daly is the second member of the squad to be injured on this tour after the scrum half Tomos Williams tore his hamstring against the Western Force last Saturday.
Farrell last played for England at the 2023 World Cup. He was roundly booed by fans in France as the furore over his pre-tournament red card for a high-tackle on Wales' Taine Basham in a warm-up game grew toxic. He suffered badly with his mental health at the World Cup and subsequently stepped back from Test rugby, having won 112 caps. In 2024 he moved to the Top14.

There are numerous reasons to question the selection of Owen Farrell as a replacement for the British & Irish Lions but nepotism is not one of them (Stuart Barnes writes). His father, Andy, probably considered the cons for longer than the pros. Three tours, six Lions caps and a ferocious determination to win all weigh in his favour. None of the factors can be lightly dismissed (and are not) but all of these unquestionable positives are historic.
Take the past out of the equation, strip away the reputation and consider the present, and you are left with one of the most bewildering selections. The past season is impossible to ignore. Next to nothing went right in France for the former England captain, who was hampered by a groin injury. The impact upon a fly half with a propensity to kick a ball cannot be underestimated. Practice does not make perfect but it makes a bloody big difference. Guys with groin injuries cut back on their kicking. They also work less on their speed.

Breaking news from Sydney: Henry Pollock has pulled out of the game with a tight calf (Alex Lowe writes). The Lions say it just precautionary. Tadhg Beirne moves to blindside flanker, Scott Cummings starts and the Lions have to ditch their plan for a 6-2 bench, with Duhan Van Der Merwe coming into the 23.
That switch, while unfortunate for Pollock, gives the Lions more of a Test match balance because the guesstimate at this stage is that Andy Farrell will play a big lump at six. Ollie Chessum is in good shape to fill that role because he is in line to start against the Brumbies on Wednesday. There will be a groan around the stadium when this change is announced, though. The Aussie public are excited about Pollock.
Not sure if you've heard, but apparently Andy Farrell has called up Owen Farrell for his fourth British & Irish Lions tour. Huge news if true! Amazingly, it has not been quiet acceptance that has greeted the revelation. Some people are mad for it, some have shouldered the responsibility of being against it. Here are just a few viewpoints…
Hugo Keenan, Blair Kinghorn and Ben White will all make their Lions debuts as Tadhg Beirne captains the side.
Keenan was meant to start in Brisbane against the Queensland Reds on Wednesday but fell ill. Elliot Daly came in for him at the last minute but broke his arm and has gone home. Keenan has recovered to wear the No15 jersey for the Waratahs match, with Kinghorn named on the left wing — his position for Toulouse. Kinghorn arrived from Paris, having won the Top14 final last Saturday.
Henry Pollock comes in to play No6 in a dynamic back-row alongside Ben Earl, at No8, and Josh van der Flier at openside flanker. Pollock has now started in all three back-row jerseys on this tour, proving his versatility.
Ben White, who was an injury replacement for Tomos Williams, who was sent home after tearing his hamstring against the Western Force, makes the bench for the first time. Andy Farrell, the head coach, has gone for a 6-2 split among the substitutes with Marcus Smith the only other back.
Before we get cracking with the details, let's remind you of the team news.

Lions player ratings as Jac Morgan shines again but England star steals show

Lions player ratings as Jac Morgan shines again but England star steals show The Lions players were impressive all round against the AUNZ invitational team and could not have done much more to convince Andy Farrell Ben Earl (left) and Jac Morgan (right) were outstanding for the Lions (Image: PA ) Andy Farrell will be a busy man over the next few days trying to put together his starting XV for the British & Irish Lions' first Test against Australia next Saturday. This thumping 48-0 over the AUNZ XV was by far the most complete Lions performance since landing in Australia and a number of players put their hands up for selection. ‌ Wales star Jac Morgan was excellent but there were other less fancied players who also impressed. ‌ Here are your player ratings. Get the latest breaking Welsh rugby news stories sent straight to your inbox with our FREE daily newsletter. Sign up here. 15. Hugo Keenan 8 Played like a man who knew the full-back berth was up for grabs for the first Test following Blair Kinghorn's injury. The Ireland full-back was poor by his standards against the Waratahs last Saturday but he put things right in Adelaide. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby. Article continues below Outstanding in attack, always spinning out of tackles and hitting good lines, while Keenan's decision making is top class. 14. Mack Hansen 7 It is easy to see why Farrell thinks the world of the Connacht winger because he didn't put a foot wrong against the AUNZ XV. Hansen was supreme in the air, hit some cracking angles in attack and acted as a playmaker to put Duhan van der Merwe over in the first-half. ‌ Makes the game look easy 13. Huw Jones 8 Jones was outstanding in Adelaide and has put some real pressure on Garry Ringrose in the race to wear the number 13 shirt in the first Test next week. With Ringrose still recovering from concussion, he could well start. Sliced open the AUNZ XV defence on a number of occasions while his distribution was top class. Jones offers something a little bit different to the other centres in the squad and is perhaps more of a game breaker than Ringrose. ‌ 12. Sione Tuipulotu 8 Finished the game as the second highest carrier with 13 and claimed a try for good measure. This was by far Tuipulotu's best performance of the tour. The 28-year-old was explosive in the carry and manipulated the defence with his footwork and subtle handling. Another very close call between Tuipulotu and Bundee Aki for the number 12 shirt next weekend. 11. Duhan van der Merwe 7 The Scotland wing claimed a hat-trick and looked very dangerous with ball in hand throughout this one-sided contest. ‌ Van der Merwe ran with real purpose all evening and is a potent attacking threat but he does have flaws in his game and looks a bit uncomfortable when the ball was chipped in behind him. This has been an issue all tour and could cost him a Test place but it was still a strong showing. Duhan van der Merwe of the British & Irish Lions breaks clear to score (Image: 2025 Getty Images ) ‌ 10. Fin Smith 7 An assured performance from the Lions playmaker whose ability to take the ball to the line and manipulate defences played a big part in unpicking the opposition defence. Smith controlled the game well with his kicking and distribution really impressive while he dovetailed well with scrum-half Ben White. The 23-year-old also put his body on the line with some big tackles. ‌ 9. Ben White 8 Many had assumed Alex Mitchell would be guaranteed a place on the bench once Tomos Williams' tour came to an abrupt end due to injury but White has thrown a spanner in the works. The Scotsman was outstanding against the AUNZ XV and showed why many thought he should have been included in the original tour party. White was a constant threat with ball in hand, scoring a cracking solo try in the first-half, while his box kicking and decision making was first class. ‌ 8. Ben Earl 9 Outstanding performance from the Lions No 8. Earl caused havoc with his explosive carrying and wicked footwork which enabled the 27-year-old to make significant post-contact metres. ‌ Won two turnovers, made 11 tackles and carried the ball 14 times. Join WalesOnline Rugby's WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free Most pundits expect Jack Conan to start the first Test at No 8 but Earl may have done enough to usurp the Irishman. 7. Jac Morgan 8 Another industrious performance by Morgan who got through a mountain of work in defence and did a lot of the unseen donkey work which allowed others to shine. ‌ He set the tone in the first minute with a huge tackle on David Havili, although he got flattened by the giant Wallaby Lukhan Salakaia-Loto. Morgan was hugely physical throughout and scored high in most aspects of his game. The man from the Amman Valley couldn't have done more to impress Farrell but it is touch and go whether he makes the Test team. ‌ 6. Henry Pollock 7 We finally got to see the 20-year-old's pulse checking celebration in a Lions shirt after he worked hard to get his hand on the ball for a try. Pollock made 10 carries and 12 tackles while he also showcased his footballing ability with a wonderful chip and chase which very nearly resulted in a try. The only real blemish was a forward pass to Ben White which would have led to a Lions try. ‌ Andy Farrell, head coach of British & Irish Lions 5. Tadhg Beirne 8 The Irishman has been a bit under par on this tour but he was back to his best in this thumping victory over the AUNZ XV. Beirne made some significant metres with his carrying and put in 14 tackles while there was also a couple of turnovers. ‌ It is touch and go whether he makes the Test team but class is permanent and all that. 4. James Ryan 7 The Irish second-row has been a bit quiet on tour but he was effective for the Lions in Adelaide. Ryan put in 15 tackles and had a real physical presence about his, ‌ The 28-year-old ran the lineout extremely well and even pinched a couple of the opposition's throws. 3. Will Stuart 7 Stuart put his best foot forward for a place on the bench for the first Test, with Tadhg Furlong almost certain to start. The Bath prop scrummaged extremely well giving Aidan Ross a torrid time at the set-piece and did his bit around the park. ‌ 2. Luke Cowan-Dickie 7 It's such a shame Cowan-Dickie's evening was cut short after a nasty knock to the head because he was on fire. The dynamic hooker was excellent at the set-piece and carried with real intent to help the Lions onto the front foot. 1. Pierre Schoeman 7 The 31-year-old was extremely destructive at the scrum and put a big shift in around the park. ‌ He made seven carries and eight tackles while his lovely tip on pass put Ronan Kelleher over for a try. Replacements 16. Ronan Kelleher 8 The Irish hooker got a half of rugby after replacing Luke Cowan-Dickie and may have cemented his place in the squad for the first Test. ‌ Solid at the set-piece and very dynamic with his carrying. He also claimed a well-deserved try. 17. Andrew Porter N/A He did not get onto the field. 18. Finlay Bealham 6 Solid at the scrum and carried well upon entering the fray. ‌ 19. Scott Cummings 7 The Scottish lock helped continue the Lions' set-piece dominance and hit a good angle to claim a try. 20. Josh van der Flier 6 Not that much time to make an impact but showed up well while on the field. 21. Alex Mitchell 5 Not enough time to make an impact but looked sharp. ‌ 22. Marcus Smith 6 The Lions playmaker looked very good with ball in hand while his distribution put others into space. But missed a few conversions he should have nailed. 23. Owen Farrell 7 A quietly impressive cameo from the England legend. Article continues below There were some nice touches of the ball from Farrell who created Henry Pollock's try with a neat kick through while his distribution was excellent.

Owen Farrell makes first appearance on Lions tour as Huw Jones lights up victory

Owen Farrell made his first appearance on the British and Irish Lions tour of Australia but it was the player he replaced, Huw Jones who lit up a 48-0 victory over an AUNZ Invitational XV. The Lions delivered their most emphatic win a week out from the first Test against the Wallabies in an eight-try demolition at Adelaide Oval that was marred only by a head injury to Luke Cowan-Dickie. Cowan-Dickie was forced off after appearing to be knocked out when making a tackle and while he was seen walking around the field at half-time, he will face a spell on the sidelines that may force the Lions to call up additional cover at hooker. And given that Garry Ringrose may miss the series opener because of suspected concussion, Jones timed his swashbuckling reminder of his threat from outside centre to perfection. The Scotland star was not among the try-scorers – Duhan van der Merwe took star billing on that front with a hat-trick – but he repeatedly carved AUNZ open to show he is ready to start in Brisbane next Saturday. Farrell came on at inside centre to the now customary mixture of boos and cheers in the 48th minute and he made a telling contribution as second receiver outside Marcus Smith, who had replaced Fin Smith. It was surprisingly easy pickings against a stacked AUNZ line-up, the nations' first composite side for 36 years that contained 17 Wallabies and All Blacks but desperately lacked cohesion, having only been thrown together this week. PA Media Duhan van der Merwe took star billing with a hat-trick for the Lions. Pleasingly for the Lions, several of the shortcomings evident throughout the tour were much improved, including their breakdown work, restarts and decision making in attack. And for the first time on tour, they seized control from the kick-off rather falling behind early – to the point they were out of sight by the end of the opening quarter after plundering three slick tries. Two of them easy finishes for Van der Merwe, who profited from the ambition and quick thinking of his team-mates. The seventh-minute opener came after a quickly-taken line-out by Hugo Keenan before scrum-half Ben White darted through where the ruck defence should have been to touch down on his debut for the tourists. White's try came after AUNZ had been carved open through purposeful running and sharp handling with Mack Hansen and Jones particularly dangerous. Henry Pollock was held up over the line as the Lions' domination continued and they detonated an overworked home defence again in the 21st minute with crisp passing giving Van der Merwe his second. When the time came for the Lions to show their mettle in their own 22, they stepped up admirably, although Cowan-Dickie's head injury came during one of the defensive set. PA Media Scott Cummings took three tacklers with him as he rampaged over. Sione Tuipulotu was the next to score as his direct line off a short-range penalty met with no resistance, with the impressive Ben Earl delivering the final pass. The Scottish theme to the try-scoring continued when Scott Cummings took three tacklers with him as he rampaged over and then Van der Merwe completed his hat-trick after Farrell had acted as first receiver. Ronan Kelleher and Pollock went over to bring an end to Scotland's grip on the scoreboard and for the time since 2013, the Lions had nilled their opponents.
