Five biggest takeaways from what Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman said on Sunday

USA Todaya day ago
Notre Dame football's fall practice's have officially made a shift on Sunday, as camp ended and now the season preparation fully begin and head coach Marcus Freeman got a chance to speak on what the Irish have accomplished during the past three weeks.
There was plenty of new developments regarding some competitions, a few freshman and transfers who have stood out, along with a very funny moment from Freeman after a slip up.
Find out below my biggest five takeaways from what Notre Dame football's leader said on Sunday, as the Irish start to prepare for the season opener against Miami.
The offensive line's open spot
Four of the five spots are locked up, as Anthonie Knapp (LT), Billy Schrauth (LG), Ashton Craig (C), and Aamil Wagner (RT) are set to be starters. Clearly the only spot left to fill is right guard, as Freeman mentioned that Sullivan Absher, Guerby Lambert and Will Black are competing for the job. Black is the least likely to win the competition, and a decision on this spot will come very soon.
A quarterback hasn't emerged yet…
While the offensive line battle is an important one, it's the quarterback race that everyone is keeping tabs on. Freeman answered multiple questions on CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey, but at this point, he has not made up his mind who will start against Miami. They'll break down the film from today's scrimmage, but one thing Freeman does know, this competition has brought out the best of both of them. He noted that they're 'really good players' who are very coachable, and do extra work outside the allotted team time. Freeman said it was a bonus that they got reps with both the 1st and 2nd teams, trying to create some cohesion with those groups.
Freeman might have made a recruiting violation
In a very funny interaction about eight minutes into Freeman talking, he misspoke and said Noah Grubb's name, the Irish's 2026 quarterback commitment, instead of Noah Burnette. He immediately caught himself, then wondered out-loud if it was a violation. While I doubt it is, because he just slipped up and said the wrong name, it was still a funny interaction.
Multiple wide receivers emerging
The wide receiver top-4 is set, with Malachi Fields, Jaden Greathouse, Will Pauling and Jordan Faison all looking like the top options, but some players below them are starting to emerge as well. While Freeman was asked about Micah Gilbert and Elijah Burress, he brought up KK Smith and Logan Saldate as two others who have impressed in camp. It's been a very long time since the Irish have had such a deep wide receiver rotation, and they should put up some numbers this season.
New faces that have stood out
It's always great to hear about the young players standing out, but in the transfer portal era, that has changed the conversation. With so many players moving, there are plenty of fresh faces each season, and Notre Dame has more of a few of them starting off by making noise. Freeman singled out the freshman corners in Dallas Golden, Mark Zackery IV and Cree Thomas, which shows how deep this secondary is. He also mentioned tight end Ty Washington, who transferred in from Arkansas. We could see plenty of these four on the field this fall for the Irish.

Notre Dame Transfer Steve Angeli Wins Syracuse Quarterback Job

If not for backup quarterback Steve Angeli, Notre Dame may have never played for a national title last season. Angeli led the Fighting Irish on a crucial drive late in the first half of their College Football Playoff semifinal victory over Penn State, displaying skills that portended a potential starting job this fall. Angeli will indeed start a season opener for the first time in his career, but not at Notre Dame. Instead, Angeli will be the starter for Syracuse, the school he transferred to in April after he was the odd man out in Notre Dame's quarterback competition. Syracuse made the news official on Monday, declaring that Angeli had beaten out Rickie Collins, an LSU transfer. Angeli will start when the Orange face No. 24 Tennessee in Atlanta on Aug. 30. The Volunteers will start Joey Aguilar, a transfer who completed 60.1% of his passes for 6,760 yards and 56 touchdowns as Appalachian State's starter the past two seasons. Angeli committed to Notre Dame in March 2021 when Brian Kelly was the head coach. He signed with the program in December 2021 shortly after Kelly left for LSU and Marcus Freeman replaced Kelly. Angeli redshirted his freshman season, then played in eight games in 2023, including making his first (and only) career start in the Sun Bowl when he completed 15 of 19 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns and led the Fighting Irish to a 40-8 victory over Oregon State. Last season, Angeli served as the backup to Riley Leonard, a Duke transfer. Angeli played sparingly in 11 games but made an impact in the CFP semifinal against Penn State. When Leonard went into the concussion protocol late in the first half, Angeli entered and completed 6 of 7 passes for 44 yards on the final drive of the half, leading to Mitch Jeter's field goal that cut Notre Dame's deficit to 10-3. The Fighting Irish ended up winning 27-24 to advance to the national title game, where they lost to Ohio State. Despite being the most experienced quarterback on the roster in the spring, Angeli knew his days were numbered when Freeman chose to narrow the competition to then-freshman CJ Carr and then-sophomore Kenny Minchey. Carr, a top recruit in the high school class of 2024, has yet to throw a pass in college, while Minchey has only attempted three passes in two seasons. Freeman still hasn't announced a starter, telling reporters on Sunday that Carr and Minchey have 'both been playing really, really well' and noting that he will make a decision soon. Notre Dame is No. 6 in the preseason Associated Press poll and visits No. 10 Miami in the season opener on Aug. 31. Angeli, who graduated from Notre Dame, will return to the school when Syracuse plays at Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 22. Even when Angeli transferred to Syracuse, he was not guaranteed the starting position, as Collins had been with the Orange since December after transferring from LSU. Collins, who grew up near LSU's campus in Baton Rouge, only appeared in four games over two seasons with the Tigers. Still, Syracuse named Collins the starter in early April before Angeli committed. Now, it is Angeli's turn to lead the Orange, which is coming off a 10-3 season in which quarterback Kyle McCord threw for 4,779 yards (the most in the Football Championship Subdivision) and 34 touchdowns. Syracuse faces a difficult schedule, including playing Atlantic Coast Conference foes Clemson (No. 4 in the preseason AP poll), SMU (No. 16), Miami (No. 10) and Notre Dame on the road. Angeli may face some obstacles along the way, but he is in an enviable position he's never been in before, seizing an opportunity and starting for a major program.

Former Wisconsin wide receiver named team captain for a College Football Playoff contender

Former Wisconsin Badgers wide receiver Will Pauling was named one of Notre Dame's team captains for the 2025 football season on Monday. Pauling, who transferred from Wisconsin to Notre Dame this winter, is one of six members of the Fighting Irish to earn team captain duties this fall. The veteran is joined by offensive lineman Aamil Wagner, safety Adon Shuler, offensive lineman Billy Schrauth, defensive lineman Donovan Hinish and linebacker Drayk Bowen. Pauling is positioned to suit up in a talented wide receiver room alongside Jordan Faison, Jaden Greathouse, Malachi Fields and K.K. Smith this fall. Specifically, Pauling is expected to lace up as one of Notre Dame's primary slot receivers when the team begins its season against Miami (FL) on Aug. 31. Pauling appears to have impressed head coach Marcus Freeman during offseason workouts, which could have prompted the Irish to turn to him as one of the program's team captains. Outside of his intensity and leadership, Pauling captained Wisconsin's wide receiver room from 2023-24, totaling 116 receptions for 1,244 yards and nine touchdowns across 23 games. He led the organization with 74 receptions, 837 yards and six scores in Luke Fickell's first full season at the helm in 2023. The rising senior also played under Fickell at Cincinnati before transferring to Wisconsin before the 2023 season, making Notre Dame his third college stop. Following Pauling's transfer, the Badgers' wide receiver room will be led by Vinny Anthony, Trech Kekahuna and Ohio State transfer Jayden Ballard. Eugene Hilton, Chris Brooks Jr., Joseph Griffin Jr. and Kyan Berry-Johnson will likely contribute as depth pass-catchers. Pauling's on-field contributions will play a major role in Notre Dame's pursuit of a second straight title game appearance.
