So here's
my cheap travel checklist to bag the best deals, find hidden budget airline fees, travel easier and not get ripped off on flights:
Be flexible with your dates
For some people, it's not always possible to be flexible with dates, especially if you need to travel around school holidays or over the weekend.
But if you can have little bit of wiggle room on when you can travel, you can save hundreds, sometimes thousands on the same flight for a family of four.
When looking for your flights, always search for the whole month and compare your chosen dates with others available around the same time, as sometimes the difference in price can be hundreds per person.

If your bag is too big when you get to the airport, you could be charged £48 each way on EasyJet and £70 each way on Ryanair - suddenly not such a cheap flight anymore.

I don't pay extra for seats but I've never been sat separately from my kids on the plane.
When you are travelling with young children, it's rare for them to be given seats that are not with at least one parent.
Most airlines have a policy that states that children will be sat 'close' to their parents or carers, but be aware that this could be in front or behind you, or across the aisle.
Ryanair has a family seating policy, which means that you are forced to pay a compulsory fee of between £4 and £6 to reserve seats with your children, which saves a lot of stress and anxiety at the airport.
I always try to keep costs down, so I rarely pay extra to reserve seats.
In all the times I have travelled with my children, which is three or four flights a year, I have never been separated from them on any airline, low-cost or otherwise.

Forget Paris for a romantic break - this city with €6 pizzas beats it hands down
Nice is… nice! Now that the most obvious pun in the world is out of the way, let's get down to business. Nice is more than nice. In fact, it's far more. I headed there last month for a short city break with my wife, Donna, to celebrate a big anniversary — and we fell in love… with the French city. When it comes to milestones, especially those of a romantic nature, most people think of Rome or even Paris — who doesn't know someone who has gotten engaged on The Spanish Steps or in front of the Eiffel Tower? READ MORE: Marco Island and Naples in Florida offer a rare kind of paradise READ MORE: Valencia offers the perfect mix for a city break to remember Well, it's been a long while since I got engaged and while the romance is far from dead, myself and the better half were looking for something different for our wedding anniversary. So we packed our weekend bags and hopped on a Ryanair flight from Dublin for the 2 hour, 40 minute flight, a doddle. And before long we had the sun on our backs as we touched down to a balmy 30 degrees. Nice old town We took a taxi to our hotel (but saved ourselves €40 on the return trip by using the easily-accessible trains), the 4-star NH Nice, and quickly realised we'd struck gold with our accommodation choice, booked with Sunway Holidays. The 'French Luas' stopped right outside the door of the hotel, giving us access to all of Nice and it was just a five-minute from the rain station, which will take you to Villefranche in just one stop and Antibes in three. A ticket costs just €1.70, no matter how many stops. A bargain. The main area of Nice was a leisurely walk from the hotel, though you could also take the tram, and on the weekend we visited, the place was buzzing — as Iron Man was taking place the following weekend. Just a five-minute walk from the hotel, you'll reach the port where I highly recommend taking a coastal cruise which goes out twice a day. For just €25 per person, this hour-long cruise gives you 'access' to the lifestyles of the rich and famous as your guide points out the house owned by Sean Connery and currently up for a sale for €23 million. And while Nice is also visited by many other celebrities — Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt honeymooned here back in 2014 — it is more than just a celebrity haunt. There are small, quaint streets where you can enjoy a bite to eat, €6 pizzas anyone?, or happy hour — this runs from 5pm to 8pm in most bars along the seafront. But we didn't have to leave our hotel to take in all Nice has to offer as the rooftop bar boasts the best views of the city, including Elton John's holiday home — I guess the sun really doesn't ever go down on the Rocket Man! Nice on the French Riviera After a night sinking some fabulous French wine, we arose each morning to a hot buffet breakfast as well as a full continental offering — would you expect anything less from the country which gave us pastries and croissants? The staff in the NH Nice are all brilliant, too, always on hand to help with any query or request we had. And the double room we booked was incredibly spacious — after 20 years of marriage, three kids and a dog, sometimes it's nice to not be under each other's feet — and looked out over the main square. The hotel is also highly sustainable, offering vouchers for the bar if you choose not to have your room cleaned and towels washed everyday. Bravo. While the French Riviera can be expensive, we found everywhere we visited to be reasonable. We enjoyed a lovely dinner of pizza and pasta and a bottle of wine in Casa Leya, which cost just €65. On another day of our trip we took the tram out to Villefranche, which took just five minutes, and is well worth a day visit. You can also head to Antibes which is just two stops on the tram and takes about 20 minutes. Nice is... very nice and we will most certainly be returning — here's to another 20 years!
