Ether-linked stocks jump as crypto coin hits 6-month high

A price chart on the Bybit website for the cryptocurrency Ethereum is seen on a computer screen in New York on Friday evening, Feb. 21, 2025. (AP Photo/Patrick Sison) Cryptocurrency-related stocks rose in premarket trading on Friday, with shares linked to ether leading the charge after the No. 2 crypto hit a six-month high. Shares of BitMine Immersion Technologies, which holds about US$1 billion worth of ether, soared 14 per cent. Other ether holding firms Bit Digital BTBT.O and BTCS BTCS.O added four per cent and 12.5 per cent, respectively. Ether ETH= climbed to US$3,675.81, its highest since January 6, and was last up five per cent at $3,601.40, outperforming bitcoin BTC=, which eased 0.7 per cent to US$118,961 after hitting a record high of $123,153 this week. BitMine, where tech billionaire Peter Thiel is the top investor and Fundstrat's Tom Lee serves as chairman of the board, said on Thursday it had accumulated 300,657 ether in just three weeks and aims to acquire about 5 per cent of over ether supply which currently stands at 120.71 million. A number of other companies recently decided to add ether to their balance sheets, following the example of Strategy, the largest corporate holder of bitcoin. Strategy's bitcoin stockpile was acquired at a sharp discount over the years to current price. SharpLink, which has funded its ether treasury through stock sale over the past seven weeks, said it had raised its current $1 billion share sale plan by an additional $5 billion. Its shares rose 5.6 per cent. Ether benefits from increased usage of U.S.-dollar-pegged tokens known as stablecoins. Most stablecoins are issued and transacted on the underlying blockchain Ethereum, driving up demand for ether to pay transaction fees. 'The standout proposition of institutional Ethereum accumulation seems to be stablecoin growth which has been further accelerated by the recent success of Circle IPO,' said Matthew Dibb, CIO at Astronaut Capital, a Singapore-based crypto asset manager. 'Ethereum is by far the biggest beneficiary of stablecoin usage.' The U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday passed a bill to create a regulatory framework for stablecoins, a watershed moment for the digital asset industry. 'Time will tell whether these treasury companies outperform the core ETH ETF, but given the success of (Strategy) in recent years, it won't stop them from trying.' BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF has gained 10 per cent so far this month, while the ether equivalent ETF ETHA.O has added nearly 36 per cent in the same period. Among other crypto stocks, stablecoin issuer Circle Internet gained 2.7 per cent, while crypto exchange Coinbase Global added two per cent on Friday. 1 Artificial Intelligence (AI) Stock to Buy Before It Jumps 37%, According to a Wall Street Analyst

Key Points HSBC has doubled its price target on AMD stock. The investment bank believes that AMD's new AI chips are powerful enough to help it close the gap with Nvidia. The potential earnings growth that AMD is expected to clock next year could indeed help it deliver the upside that HSBC analysts are expecting. 10 stocks we like better than Advanced Micro Devices › Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ: AMD) has underperformed the broader semiconductor sector in the past year. Shares of the chipmaker have slid almost 20% during this period, but it looks like the company's fortunes could turn around in the coming year. HSBC analyst Frank Lee has doubled his price target on AMD stock to $200, which points toward 37% gains from current levels. Lee says that AMD has managed to close in on Nvidia 's (NASDAQ: NVDA) lead in the artificial intelligence (AI) accelerator market with its latest series of processors, and that could help the former record a big bump in its revenue next year. Let's take a closer look at the reasons why HSBC has become so bullish on AMD stock, and check if AMD could indeed hit the $200 mark going forward. AMD's data center revenue could jump significantly thanks to its latest chips AMD launched its MI350X and MI355X data center graphics processing units (GPUs) last month. The company says that these new processors are three times more powerful than the previous MI300X accelerators, and they even outperform Nvidia's Blackwell GPUs in both AI training and inference workloads. AMD has equipped these processors with a whopping 288 gigabytes (GB) of high-bandwidth memory (HBM), which is 1.6 times higher than Nvidia's GB200 and B200 AI graphics cards. The serious performance gains and competitiveness that AMD claims to have achieved with its latest GPUs are translating into more business for the company, according to HSBC. AMD says that it is partnering with multiple AI giants such as Meta Platforms, Microsoft, Oracle, OpenAI, and xAI, among others, to build and deploy AI data centers powered by its processors. In fact, AMD claims that "seven of the 10 largest model builders and AI companies are running production workloads" using its AI accelerators. This improving adoption of AMD's AI chips can be attributed to a big bump in computing power along with an improvement in energy efficiency, which enables its customers to reduce operating costs. Even better, AMD has reportedly priced its latest AI accelerators competitively so that it can eat into Nvidia's share. According to HSBC analysts, AMD's MI355 AI GPU is 30% cheaper than Nvidia's B200. Not surprisingly, they are expecting the price-to-performance advantage of AMD's latest chips to translate into healthy data center revenue growth. The company is now expected to achieve $15 billion in AI GPU revenue in 2026, which is higher than the consensus estimate of $9.6 billion on Wall Street. It's worth noting that AMD ended 2024 with an estimated data center GPU revenue of over $5 billion. So, AMD could potentially triple this business in just two years. Moreover, AMD management is forecasting its data center GPU revenue to reach an annual run rate of "tens of billions of dollars" in the long run, and it looks like its new chips could help it achieve that target. The projected earnings growth points toward solid upside Consensus estimates are projecting a 17% increase in AMD's earnings this year, followed by a much stronger jump of 47% in 2026 to $5.71 per share. That won't be surprising, considering the estimated jump of 3x in its data center GPU revenue. AMD has an additional catalyst in the form of the client CPU (central processing unit) market, where it is winning more share, apart from capitalizing on the secular growth of the AI personal computer market. All this suggests that AMD could indeed hit Wall Street's consensus earnings target in 2026, though there's a chance that it may be able to do better than that. This improved earnings power could translate into more upside on the stock market. AMD is currently trading at 39 times forward earnings, which is a discount to the U.S. technology sector's average of 51. Even if it trades at a discounted 35 times earnings and achieves $5.71 per share in earnings in 2026, its stock price could hit $200. So, investors can start accumulating this semiconductor stock, as it seems set for a turnaround thanks to its improving stature in AI chips. 3 Unstoppable Dow Dividend Stocks to Buy and Hold Forever

Key Points Artificial intelligence (AI) is boosting income and growth at networking giant Cisco Systems. McDonald's, with nearly a half-century of rising dividends, will continue to enrich investors. Challenges in the health insurance industry have boosted the dividend yield at UnitedHealth. 10 stocks we like better than Cisco Systems › The Dow Jones Industrial Average comprises 30 blue chip stocks that investors often regard as a proxy for the overall economy. Amidst that prominence, all but two of the 30 components return cash to shareholders, a move that tends to affirm that stability. Still, investors may also want stock growth potential along with a strong dividend. To that end, these Dow stocks are well-positioned to deliver rising payouts without compromising potential returns from stock price growth. 1. Cisco Systems After years of slow revenue increases, growth is finally speeding up for Cisco Systems (NASDAQ: CSCO). Coming off the networking giant's acquisition of Splunk, product orders are up 20% year over year (or 9% if not including Splunk). The growth comes as companies work to integrate AI into security and network management. The rising orders should also bolster what has already served as a strong dividend. Its payout has risen every year since the company began offering dividends in 2011. At $1.64 per share annually, Cisco now has a dividend yield of 2.4%. That compares well to the S&P 500 's average yield of 1.2%. More importantly, Cisco can likely sustain its dividend growth. In the first nine months of fiscal 2025 (ended April 26), it generated $9.3 billion in free cash flow, enough to cover the $4.8 billion in dividend costs over that period. Investors have begun to take notice of the stock in recent months. The stock is up by nearly 50% over the last year, and its P/E ratio of 28 sits at multi-year highs. Despite that recent growth, that places the P/E ratio slightly under the S&P 500 average earnings multiple of 30, indicating there is likely still time to buy Cisco stock. 2. McDonald's Dividend investors may also find a lot to like in McDonald's (NYSE: MCD) stock. Admittedly, that might not seem to be the case amid a sluggish economy and intense competition in the restaurant industry, and some investors may be leery of its 27 P/E ratio. However, since McDonald's actually profits from franchising, such challenges may have relatively little effect on its top line. McDonald's earns most of its revenue from franchising fees and restaurant rentals from its extensive real estate portfolio. While it also claims a percentage of the revenue driven from these restaurants, it also means that restaurant sales have less of an effect on the company than rivals such as Chipotle Mexican Grill. That stability contributes to the strength of its dividend, which has risen every year since its introduction in 1976. At $7.08 per share annually, it yields 2.3%. Furthermore, the payout appears sustainable, as its more than $6.7 billion in free cash flow covered the dividend costs of about $4.9 billion in 2024. Additionally, the stock was up just over 20% over the last year. When combining that with returns on the dividend, investors appear to have a surprisingly robust growth and income stock in McDonald's. 3. UnitedHealth Group When it comes to Dow dividend stocks, investors may have a unique buying opportunity in health insurer UnitedHealth Group (NYSE: UNH). The company offers health insurance to individuals, including Medicare and Medicaid recipients, as well as plans for employers. Nonetheless, its stock has fallen by nearly 40%, as rising medical costs led to lower earnings guidance in the first quarter of 2025. The tragic shooting of CEO Brian Thompson also plagued the stock. Moreover, investigations by the Department of Justice and The New York Times have called some of its business practices into question. So severe was the drop in the stock price that the selling has wiped out almost all the stock's five-year gain. Although such challenges tend to weigh on stocks, at least for a time, UnitedHealth should be positioned for recovery if it properly addresses those allegations. Additionally, the company's current stock price gives investors a tremendous incentive to take a position in the stock. Its P/E ratio has fallen to 13, its lowest point since 2013. The decline has also boosted its dividend yield to 2.8%, close to all-time highs. With that, it is worth noting that the payout has risen for 15 straight years and now pays shareholders $8.84 per share annually. Furthermore, despite rising costs, UnitedHealth's nearly $21 billion in free cash flow enabled it to meet its $7.5 billion in dividend costs in 2024. Hence, not only can UnitedHealth afford its generous, rising dividend, but investors also have a unique opportunity to buy this stock at an unusually low price. If one can tolerate its risks, the health insurance stock offers tremendous potential for growth. Should you invest $1,000 in Cisco Systems right now?
