Atletico deny offers for Angel Correa after forward appeared to say goodbye on Sunday

New York Times19-05-2025

Atletico Madrid have denied receiving any offers for Angel Correa after the forward appeared to say goodbye to the club on Sunday.
Correa is under contract until June 2026 but, following Sunday's 4-1 win over Real Betis, posted on Instagram at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano that he had 'lived my last home game in this shirt that I love so much'.

Correa has been a mainstay in the Atletico team since arriving from San Lorenzo in his native Argentina in 2014 but has made only five starts across La Liga and the Champions League this term.
Spanish outlets have linked the 30-year-old with a summer departure from Atletico and he appeared emotional at the end of the Betis game, walking a lap around the stadium and seemingly waving goodbye. Atletico end their league campaign next Sunday with a trip to Girona.
'Given the doubts generated at the end of yesterday's match against Real Betis at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the club wants to clarify that Angel Correa is currently under contract with Atletico Madrid until June 30, 2026,' Atletico said in a statement on Monday.
'No club has contacted our entity to start negotiations for a possible transfer of our striker, nor has his representative made us any offer for the Argentine international.'
A post shared by Angel Correa (@angelcorrea32)
Correa has scored 88 goals in 465 games for Atletico, making him their sixth-highest appearance maker. He was part of the La Liga-winning side in 2020-21, as well as winning the Europa League in 2018 and finishing as a Champions League runner-up in 2016. In 44 appearances this term, he has scored eight goals, his lowest return since the 2019-20 season.
'A brilliant career that the club will deservedly recognise in due course when the player finishes his contract or if the circumstances of a transfer to another club should arise,' Atletico added.
Following the Girona game, Atletico continue their season at the Club World Cup in June. Diego Simeone's side will face Paris Saint-Germain, Seattle Sounders and Botafogo in their group.

It's fun, and not fun – Jannik Sinner looks forward to final with Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner says his blockbuster French Open final against Carlos Alcaraz will be 'fun, and not fun'. Italian world number one Sinner takes on second seed and defending champion Alcaraz in the first major final between the new generation of men's tennis superstars. Advertisement It is a match-up tinged with extra significance after Sinner beat Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, with the 38-year-old Serb – the last of the old guard still just about standing – admitting it may have been his last Roland Garros. Instead it will be Sinner and Alcaraz who take centre stage in the first men's grand-slam final to be contested between two players born in this century. 'It's fun, and not fun, you know. It's both ways,' said 23-year-old Sinner of meeting the Spaniard, one year his junior. 'But I think we try to push ourselves in the best possible way. I believe when there is a good match, it's also good to play, you know. It's not only to watch, but also to play. It's very special. Advertisement 'And the stage, it doesn't get any bigger now. Grand-slam finals against Carlos, it's a special moment for me and for him, too. 'He won here last year, so let's see what's coming. But for sure, the tension you feel before the match and during the match is a little bit different in a way, because we are both very young, we are both different, but talented.' It is an intriguing showdown between the two bright young things who have won the last five grand slams between them. Sinner, the reigning US and Australian Open champion, is on a 20-match winning streak at grand slams and, with Wimbledon on the horizon, could be five weeks away from holding all four titles. Advertisement But standing in the way of the 'Sinner Slam' is Alcaraz, who has won their last four meetings including the semi-final here last year and in the final on the Rome clay last month, albeit in the Italian's first tournament back from a three-month doping suspension. Alcaraz is also bidding to become the first man to retain the title since his idol, Rafael Nadal, managed it in 2020. 'Jannik, he's the best tennis player right now. I mean, he's destroying every opponent,' said Alcaraz. 'I love that battle. But, you know, most of the time is just about suffering, being pushed to the limit. 'But my favourite thing is it gives you the feedback of how can I be better, a better player. I think that's important, and that's beautiful, even though if I win or not.'

Report: Bundesliga clubs interested in Fabio Silva

Plettenberg's reports suggest that Silva is one to watch for the summer transfer window, with the 22-year-old striker planning to leave the West Midlands. Wolves value the striker at around €20–25 million after a successful loan spell in La Liga with Las Palmas, scoring 10 goals and registering three assists. Advertisement Reports suggest that there is strong interest from the Bundesliga, with Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt and Wolfsburg all monitoring his situation. Silva joined Wolves in 2020, arriving from Porto for a hefty €40 million fee, naturally, expectations were sky high. However, after limited success in Old Gold, Silva has been out on loan with PSV Eindhoven, Rangers and most recently, Las Palmas. A physical and versatile centre forward, Silva will hope that a potential Bundesliga move can give him the platform to continue on with his trajectory, kick-started in Spain.

Real Madrid mainstay a doubt for France's UEFA Nations League semi-final vs Spain

Real Madrid's French entourage has already linked up with Didier Deschamps' squad in anticipation of the upcoming UEFA Nations League semifinal between France and Spain. Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni are amongst the players called up and a part of the manager's preferred lineup when fit. While the former is ready to start, however, the same cannot be said about the latter. Advertisement Tchouameni largely struggled with his fitness in the recent season and regularly found himself on the sidelines nursing from some serious setback. Now, he may well miss his national team's game as relayed by MARCA. Doubt against Spain As reported by the Spanish outlet, it is very unlikely that Tchouameni faces Spain this weekend for he has not trained with the group from June 1st. It was expected that he would return to group training this afternoon but the player appears to be running behind schedule on his recovery. Receiving the green light before the game, thus, is unlikely. Tchouameni likely to miss France vs Spain. (Photo by Juan Manuel) The situation for Didier Deschamps, thus, is an unpleasant one for he is without William Saliba, Jules Kounde, and Dayot Upamecano for the tournament, all three of whom are bonafide starting defenders.' Advertisement The midfielder's blow comes as a massive one in the grand scheme of things for the manager has no like-for-like profile replacement. Matteo Guendouzi and Warren Zaire-Emery come to mind but are not as defensively sound as Tchouameni is. The semi-final will be held in a single leg on Thursday night in Stuttgart and Spain can be considered slight favorites given their relative lack of injuries. Needless to say, however, it is bound to be a fiercely fought battle. From Real Madrid's perspective, meanwhile, they will hope the player plays no part tomorrow night and is fit in time for the Club World Cup.
