
Goose and Cuckoo Inn finalist in Food Awards Wales 2025
The awards celebrate the best culinary destinations in Wales, honouring the hard work and dedication of those who provide the country with fresh products and culinary delights.
Pubs, restaurants, cafes, bistros, and other food businesses are acknowledged for their contribution to the Welsh food industry.
The Goose and Cuckoo Inn is owned by Kyle and Haf Williams, who have family ties in the village dating back over 100 years.
They took over the inn after dreaming of owning their own pub and said they were delighted to have the "privilege" of taking ownership of the "magnificent" inn.
They celebrated their achievement on Facebook by saying: "Oh my goodness! Finalist again! Can't believe it!"
Irfan Younis, a spokesperson for The Food Awards Wales, said: "It's an honour for us to highlight the top food establishments and businesses that have stood out amongst the rest in the Welsh food industry.
"This year's finalists reflect the resilience and creativity of countless chefs, producers, employees, and managers who are always ensuring that locals and visitors eat well.
"We want to congratulate all our finalists and wish them the best of luck."
The winners will be announced at a ceremony on October 6 at the Marriott Hotel in Cardiff.
The awards are based on months of research, industry insight, and past public votes.
The public can now vote for their favourite establishments to help crown the 2025 champions.
An open category has also been introduced this year, allowing customers to nominate businesses not on the list.
The awards aim to celebrate the talent, creativity, and passion that drives the Welsh food industry.

New Era of Reskilling Needed to Shape Future-fit Workforce in Wales
The labour market in Wales is being reshaped by three key trends – automation, the transition to net zero, and an ageing workforce – transforming both the nature of work and the skills required for jobs in Wales. A new CIPD report, Lifelong Learning in the Reskilling Era, highlights how these trends offer opportunities, but also risk deepening inequalities if workers are unable to reskill or retrain. In response, the report calls for a 'new era of reskilling' with action from Welsh employers and the UK Government to help people – of all ages – develop new skills, stay in employment and build long-term financial security. Automation: transforming jobs Research cited in the report reveals that automation threatens 3.6% of jobs in Wales, higher than the UK average of 3%. Those in low-skilled and administrative roles are particularly at risk, as are young workers (aged 16–24) due to their strong presence in entry-level or low-skill positions. However, the report highlights that these technological shifts also present significant opportunities for more fulfilling and higher-quality jobs. For example, 28% of jobs in Wales are estimated to be exposed to generative AI which is expected to help reduce repetitive or time-consuming tasks, and create new roles, business models, and industries. The key challenge for employers will be to ensure that workers are not left behind but are equipped to seize these emerging opportunities. Organisations are urged to prioritise targeted training and reskilling to empower employees to adapt to new ways of working or transition into entirely new roles. Green skills urgently needed Wales currently has 11,000 full-time roles in low-carbon sectors, and looking ahead, it is estimated that around 6.3 million workers in the UK (one in five) will see their job change due to the transition to net zero by 2050. For about 10% of workers, this will involve adapting to new skill requirements, while another 10% may need to retrain entirely. In response, the CIPD's report calls for urgent investment in green skills training. It warns that without such investment, businesses in Wales will struggle to compete in emerging markets or reap the economic and environmental benefits of supporting the UK Government's target of reaching net zero by 2050. Employers in construction, energy, manufacturing, and logistics are especially urged to embed green skills into workforce planning, to remain competitive and drive sustainable growth. Longer working lives will reshape the workforce Demographic shifts are also reshaping the Welsh workforce. Employment among 50–64-year-olds in Wales has increased by 32% over the last two decades – more than triple the overall employment growth rate of just 9% in Wales (from 2004-2024). Yet, Wales has one of the lowest employment rates for older workers in the UK at 67%, compared to 76% in the South East of England. Furthermore, by 2050, the UK will see a 41% increase in people aged 65 and over (from 19% to 23% of the population), while the share of those under 25 will decline from 29% to 24%. This demographic transformation presents a fundamental challenge to how we approach work, retirement, and economic growth. As people live and work longer, many will reassess their career goals. Some may seek more flexible roles to accommodate caregiving or health needs, while others may pursue retraining for new opportunities later in life. However, with declining access to training and job mobility as people age, there's a risk that older people may become trapped in unsuitable roles or fall out of the labour market entirely if their jobs are displaced or no longer fit their mobility needs, impacting their earning potential and wellbeing. A future-fit workforce in Wales Considering these challenges – and new UK Government data showing nearly 45% of workers aren't contributing to a pension – Wales risks falling behind in building a future-ready, financially resilient workforce, without coordinated action from employers and policymakers. A collaborative approach to reskilling and lifelong learning is urgently needed to help workers – of all ages – adapt and stay in work. To achieve this, further recommendations for the Government and Welsh employers in the report include: Boost workplace training with more internal skills development, reskilling, and redeployment opportunities. This will expose people new skills and different roles. Address barriers to adult learning like time and cost, especially for those with work or caregiving responsibilities and open up more flexible learning pathways. The Government should consider introducing individual support measures such as training vouchers, flexible learning accounts, and paid educational leave. If changes to retirement age and the pensions crisis mean we're all going to work for longer, we urgently need to usher in a new era of reskilling to help people develop into new roles and sectors. However, the real challenge lies not just in keeping people in work longer – it's about the quality and sustainability of that work. By reimaging how we support people to learn and adapt throughout their lives, we can build a more resilient, equitable and prosperous future for everyone.

How's the Water? Making a Better Business Environment for Wales
A favourable business environment is key to economic success. All businesses – but particularly smaller businesses – depend upon local skills provision, on good infrastructure, on support and advice, and on a regulation system that is not too complex. Often, one business owner has to deal with everything from employment law and health and safety, to business strategy and stock to marketing and so on. Less time means fewer opportunities taken. Of course, there are plenty of examples of high-flying and high-profile entrepreneurs whose image suggests that their success is entirely their own doing. But one academic compares entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley who attribute success to themselves alone as like a fish being told it is thriving because of water – to which the fish replies: 'What is water?'. The environment around a successful business contributes in huge part to making it thrive – and can indeed be taken for granted. This is a mistake which can all too often be made by policy makers, where the need to 'tend' the environment is often unappreciated. And yet government needs business success in order to achieve its wider policy goals. The economy is the foundation of success not just in terms of prosperity, but also in terms of building the base for social and environmental policy success. This is a central idea in recent work on economic success which looks at 'entrepreneurial ecosystems'. This approach argues that entrepreneurship can be taught, and it can be cultivated with an environment conducive to supporting businesses and to lowering barriers to business success. Ecologies differ from each other and rely on different sources of strength. What works in Silicon Valley can't just be transplanted to the Welsh Valleys. Nevertheless, nothing is set in stone – and we can proactively look to make an environment that supports our businesses toward future success, even if that has been difficult in the past. How we use Welsh strengths to create that supportive environment is what FSB Cymru's recent report 'Cultivating Small Business Growth' seeks to address. We conducted a survey of SMEs and a series of interviews with businesses as well as with business support providers to gather evidence on what works. Firstly, it is important to note that the core of our business support system – Business Wales and Development Bank of Wales – is a well-recognised brand. This may seem mundane but, given that in Wales we often find confusion about where powers lie relative to UK Government, this is in fact a real advantage. It's also one to capitalise upon in developing a clear one-stop-shop for SMEs in Wales. While imperfect, if we did not already have these organisations we would need to create something like them. Our survey and interviews suggest that businesses are broadly positive about Business Wales, with our survey noting that 58% have a positive experience versus 22% having a negative experience. That can and should be improved however, and we did find a lot of businesses finding the system unwieldy and too slow in addressing their immediate needs. Business support organisations can improve the experience of services by increasing face-to-face engagement, setting targets for how quickly queries receive a response and implementing a 'case officer' approach with a named point of contact. With the UK Government now looking to implement its Industrial Strategy and its upcoming Small Business Strategy, as well as its new iteration of Shared Prosperity Funding next year, it's important that we use what already works, and target increased funding as investment in small business growth. This will need: A properly resourced system: The Welsh Government should restore funding levels for business support in Wales in real terms to those in place before the UK left the EU, and commit to multi-year budgets. I started by noting the entrepreneur as a fish being unaware of its environment, asking 'what is water'. In short, we must collectively acknowledge the importance of the business environment in cultivating business success in Wales, and we must act collaboratively to improve it. Then we will be able to ask our SMEs: 'How's the water in Wales?' and be confident that their reply will be: 'Well, the water's very nice, actually.'
