On duty railway police constable among 5 dead in Mumbra local train accident

Indian Express09-06-2025
Among the five passengers who fell off a local train and died near Mumbra in Thane on Monday is a railway police constable who was on duty at the time of the accident.
Vicky Babasaheb Mukhyadal, 34, who was attached to the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), was headed to work in civilian clothes when he lost his life. Senior GRP officers said Mukhyadal was transferred from Kalyan GRP a year ago.
'He was a very smart policeman with good crime detection skills. He used to live in Kalyan with his family. The body will soon be handed over to them,' said Sudhakar Shirsat, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thane GRP.
Mukhyadal and four other passengers were on two local trains, one bound for CSMT and the other for Kalyan, when they fell off along with the others near Mumbra railway station on Monday morning, a GRP officer said, citing inputs from the preliminary inquiry. Seven others were injured in the incident.
The passengers reportedly fell around 9 am while the Kasara-bound train, which started from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), was passing through the Diva-Mumbra area. People hanging off this train's footboard collided with the passengers who were similarly clinging on to another train that was passing in the opposite direction towards CSMT, causing the accident, sources said.
The Central Railway authorities confirmed that another train was passing towards the opposite side, resulting in the accident.
The Mumbra police reached the accident spot and rushed the victims to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, where five were declared dead. While authorities are trying to determine what exactly caused the accident, sources said it occurred because the train was overcrowded and passengers were standing on either side of its doors.
'Accident-prone area'
A GRP officer said the stretch has become 'accident-prone' in recent years, especially for fast-moving trains.
There is a possibility that the tracks got pushed down a little due to the recent heavy rainfall in the area, eventually reducing the distance between trains, the officer indicated. Though the distance reduced between the tracks in this manner could be by a small margin, during peak hours, when passengers travel on the footboard due to crowding, it could lead to fatal incidents. A thorough probe is, however, underway to ascertain the exact cause behind the incident.
Following the accident, the Railway Board announced that all trains being manufactured for the Mumbai Suburban region will have an automatic door-closing feature. Rakes that are in service will also be redesigned, and the same feature will be added.

Cleaner killed, driver injured while changing tyre on Samruddhi eway

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: A 35-year-old truck cleaner was crushed to death and the driver sustained serious injuries after another truck crashed into their vehicle from behind on the Balasaheb Thackeray Samruddhi Mahamarg near Tandalwadi Shivar, close to Jalna city, on Thursday morning. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Police said the victims, both brothers, had pulled over to the side of the road to change a punctured tyre on their Nagpur-bound truck around 8.30am when the accident occurred. Cleaner Vijay Prakash (35), from Uttar Pradesh's Balrampur district, was crouched by the vehicle, which had started its journey in Mumbai, to assist with the repair. His elder brother, driver Anand Prakash (40), was supervising the operation, said Chandanzira police station inspector Balasaheb Pawar. A speeding container, also on its way from Mumbai to Nagpur, rammed the stationary truck with tremendous force from behind. "The impact proved fatal for Vijay, who was crushed to death on the spot. Anand sustained serious injuries in the collision and was taken to a higher medical facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar for treatment," said assistant sub-inspector Krishna Shinde. Vijay Prakash's body was sent to the Jalna civil hospital for an autopsy. Police have registered an accidental death case at the Chandanzira police station. Both the vehicles have been seized for further investigation. Police are also probing if speeding and driver negligence led to the accident.

Chit on pigeon threatens ‘IED blast' at Jammu Tawi railway station

Representative image JAMMU: BSF personnel intercepted a messenger pigeon near a forward post along the international border in Jammu's RS Pura sector on August 19, bearing a suspicious handwritten note threatening to blow up Jammu Tawi railway station using an IED, official sources said. The chit was written in English and Urdu. 'Kashmir hamara hai, waqt aa gaya hai, aa jayega (Kashmir is ours, the time has come, it will come). Jammu station IED blast – THE END,' it read. The security grid was subsequently fortified in and around the railway station, and forces were put on high alert. Rigorous passenger checks and baggage inspections followed. Additional police units, a bomb disposal squad, and sniffer dogs were pressed into service to comb the area. Special teams were deployed to monitor any suspicious activity, police sources said. While no explosive was found on the premises, security agencies were unwilling to let their guard down, as Jammu Tawi and Supwal railway stations have previously borne the brunt of terrorism. All trains ran on schedule, and there was no disruption in service. On Aug 16, a gas balloon bearing the Pakistan International Airlines logo was found in a forward area in the border town of Ramgarh in Samba district. Women who accompanied Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh allege harassment by Bajrang Dal, railway cops

RAIPUR: Three women from Bastar's Narayanpur district have lodged a complaint with the Chhattisgarh State Women's Commission, alleging physical and mental harassment by Bajrang Dal cadres and Government Railway Police (GRP) at Durg station on July 25, in connection with an alleged human trafficking and forced religious conversion case. Kamleshwari Pradhan, Lalita Usendi and Sukmati Mandavi submitted their grievances to the commission in Raipur, seeking justice. On 2 August, a special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court in Bilaspur granted bail to two Catholic nuns from Kerala, who had been arrested on charges of human trafficking and religious conversion. 'The women in their complaint against Jyoti Sharma, Ravi Nigam, Ratan Yadav and the GRP Durg incharge alleged they were physically ill-treated, verbally abused and threatened with gang rape in the presence of police personnel,' said Kiranmayee Nayak, Chairperson of the Commission. During the hearing, the accused named in the complaint did not appear before the Commission. 'The complainants have arrived but the respondents have refused to attend. So, according to our laid down procedures, we will inform them through the concerned police station asking them to be present during the next hearing,' Nayak said. She added that the GRP Durg incharge will also be summoned to attend the proceedings. Commission members conducted preliminary questioning of the three girls, who said they expected a fair and impartial hearing. The Chairperson has also sought detailed information on the 25 July incident, including CCTV footage, from the Durg district police chief. The women had earlier filed a complaint with the Narayanpur superintendent of police against Bajrang Dal activists. They stated that they were willingly travelling with the nuns to Agra to take up work in a hospital, and that they had converted to Christianity around six years ago. 'The Bajrang Dal cadres forcibly stopped the girls at Durg station and assaulted them with abusive remarks. All three were very scared and remain in shock after the incident,' relatives of the women claimed, demanding an FIR against Jyoti Sharma and other Bajrang Dal members 'so that such alleged incidents should not happen again.'
