On duty railway police constable among 5 dead in Mumbra local train accident
Among the five passengers who fell off a local train and died near Mumbra in Thane on Monday is a railway police constable who was on duty at the time of the accident.
Vicky Babasaheb Mukhyadal, 34, who was attached to the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), was headed to work in civilian clothes when he lost his life. Senior GRP officers said Mukhyadal was transferred from Kalyan GRP a year ago.
'He was a very smart policeman with good crime detection skills. He used to live in Kalyan with his family. The body will soon be handed over to them,' said Sudhakar Shirsat, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thane GRP.
Mukhyadal and four other passengers were on two local trains, one bound for CSMT and the other for Kalyan, when they fell off along with the others near Mumbra railway station on Monday morning, a GRP officer said, citing inputs from the preliminary inquiry. Seven others were injured in the incident.
The passengers reportedly fell around 9 am while the Kasara-bound train, which started from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), was passing through the Diva-Mumbra area. People hanging off this train's footboard collided with the passengers who were similarly clinging on to another train that was passing in the opposite direction towards CSMT, causing the accident, sources said.
The Central Railway authorities confirmed that another train was passing towards the opposite side, resulting in the accident.
The Mumbra police reached the accident spot and rushed the victims to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, where five were declared dead. While authorities are trying to determine what exactly caused the accident, sources said it occurred because the train was overcrowded and passengers were standing on either side of its doors.
'Accident-prone area'
A GRP officer said the stretch has become 'accident-prone' in recent years, especially for fast-moving trains.
There is a possibility that the tracks got pushed down a little due to the recent heavy rainfall in the area, eventually reducing the distance between trains, the officer indicated. Though the distance reduced between the tracks in this manner could be by a small margin, during peak hours, when passengers travel on the footboard due to crowding, it could lead to fatal incidents. A thorough probe is, however, underway to ascertain the exact cause behind the incident.
Following the accident, the Railway Board announced that all trains being manufactured for the Mumbai Suburban region will have an automatic door-closing feature. Rakes that are in service will also be redesigned, and the same feature will be added.

Mumbra train tragedy: Call for automated doors, more trains after at least 4 dead due to overcrowding
Speaking to the media, Central Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Swapnil Nila said that the guard of the Kasara-bound train reported at 9.30 am that some injured passengers were lying along the tracks near the control room at CSMT. He, however, did not know from which train the passengers had fallen. The Central Railway officials said that prima facie, the passengers on the footboard of the down train towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) collided with those standing on the footboard of a Kasara-bound train headed in the opposite direction on the parallel track. Mumbai: At least four passengers died, whereas over a dozen suffered injuries after falling off a crowded moving train near Mumbra station in Thane district Monday morning. Visiting the site later, Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde said that at least five people died in the incident even as the police said four people died. At least a dozen persons injured in the incident are now under treatment at different hospitals in Mumbra and Thane. 'It is not a collision of trains. People travelling on the footboard of a local train towards Kasara and those similarly travelling on a train going towards CSMT collided with each other and fell,' he said. 'The distance between the two trains was 1.5-2 metres, but at curves, a slight tilt happens, which could have been another reason for the incident.' According to railway officials, the train was overcrowded, and hence, people stood on footboards. A police team and railway officials immediately rushed to the spot, and an investigation is currently underway. How to prevent such accidents The railways, soon after the incident, decided to provide automated doors for all new and existing Mumbai suburban train rakes shortly, Swapnil Nila told the media. Currently, the Mumbai suburban trains have open doors. Many passengers during peak hours stand on the footboard. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said to the media, 'The incident in which a total of eight passengers fell from a local train between the Diva and Mumbra stations, resulting in some fatalities, is extremely unfortunate. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the deceased.' He added: 'The local administration is coordinating efforts on the ground. I pray to god for the swift recovery of the injured. The railway department has initiated an investigation to determine the exact cause of the incident.' Speaking to the media, MP Shrikant Shinde acknowledged that many people now lived in Kalyan on the Dombivali side. With that, he said, 'The availability of trains needs to go up and should be done quickly.' There have been sharp political reactions to the incident. Congress state president Harshwardhan Sapkal, in a statement to the media, said, 'These deaths are not by accident. These people became victims at the hands of the government. For the past 11 years, the people of Maharashtra and Mumbai have been listening to empty promises about improved infrastructure and smoother commutes for Mumbaikars.' 'In the name of development and facilities, it has become a game of awarding tenders and collecting commissions. The ruling officials and contractors have grown richer through this nexus, while ordinary citizens are paying for this corruption with their lives.' Shiv Sena UBT and NCP(SP) have expressed anguish over the incident, too. Sharad Pawar, in an X post, said that the growing population of Mumbai needed appropriate facilities. 'On an average 6-7 people die every day after falling off from local trains. It is not right to blame the passengers for this incident. Central Railway should plan well and take timely action against this. The trains on important routes should be increased. Fitting automated doors on trains should be done timely,' wrote Sharad Pawar. 'It was wrapped in plastic': Greta Thunberg trolled for sandwich photo amid kidnap claims. What is the truth?
Greta Thunberg was trolled for this photo as she was seen smiling seeing a sandwich while her pre-recorded video that she had been kidnapped was released. The photo of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg , smiling at the sight of a sandwich, became the flashpoint on social media as people asked whether she was kidnapped at all, as she claimed. The Israeli foreign ministry called it a drama and posted the photo of the crew members of Madleen, the Gaza-bound aid ship -- sitting side by side while an Israeli soldier offered them bottled water and sandwiches. Greta Thunberg was also among them. But the Freedom Flotilla Coalition claimed earlier that the Israeli military attacked and unlawfully boarded the Madleen which was taking aid to Gaza. 'If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel,' the FFC released a video in which Thunberg said this. When the FFC lost communication with Madleen, it began posting pre-recorded video messages and Thunberg's one was one of them. In a statement, the FFC said Israel had acted with 'total impunity' and that the vessel's cargo, which included baby formula, food and medical supplies was 'confiscated.' Israel said it would transfer the goods to Gaza through humanitarian channels. 'Israel has no legal authority to detain international volunteers aboard the Madleen,' said Huwaida Arraf, human rights attorney and Freedom Flotilla organizer. 'This seizure blatantly violates international law and defies the (International Court of Justice's) binding orders requiring unimpeded humanitarian access to Gaza.' Israel called the ship a 'selfuie yacht' and said the ship was intercepted to give the celebrity activists sandwiches and water and to safely transport them to the shores of Israel. Social media users trolled Greta Thunberg, pointing out that the climate activist might not have liked the fact that the sandwiches were wrapped in plastic. One said that those were also white bread with no mayonnaise and not even toasted. "Greta is now being held hostage by Jews, who are taunting her with sandwiches possibly containing artificial additives and wrapped in plastic. These brutes are forcing her to smile!" one said. British broadcaster Piers Morgan called Thunberg an "attention-seeking narcissist". "What an insult to the actual hostages in Gaza who really WERE kidnapped. This stupid stunt is all about your ego, and will make zero difference to the plight of innocent Palestinians caught up in this dreadful war," Morgan posted.

'Something Hit Our Coach': How Mumbai Local Train Mishap Unfolded; Fadnavis Says 'Railways Probe On'
Last Updated: Railway officials said the passengers probably fell as commuters hanging from the footboard and their backpacks brushed each other as two trains passed in opposite directions An eyewitness provided a chilling account of the horrific train mishap in Maharashtra's Thane district in which at least four commuters, including a GRP constable, were killed and nine were injured. The eyewitness said someone fell from a coach ahead of theirs and they felt something hit the compartment. The incident took place in a moving and overcrowded local train during Monday morning rush hour. The deceased were identified as Ketan Saroj, Rahul Gupta, Mayur Shah and Thane GRP constable Vicky Mukhyad. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the railway administration is looking into the cause of the accident, even as the Congress demanded the resignation of railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and MNS chief Raj Thackeray made a controversial statement, saying Mumbai's suburban railway system has collapsed due to an influx of migrants. HOW IT HAPPENED? The eyewitness to the suburban railway mishap said the chain of events began after someone in the coach ahead of his either fell after hitting a wall or 'something hit our compartment". According to the police, the incident took place between Diva and Kopar railway stations when the train was going towards Kasara. The passengers probably fell after commuters hanging from the footboard of two overcrowded trains and their backpacks brushed against each other as the trains passed in opposite directions, said Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, chief public relations officer (CPRO) of the Central Railway. This eyewitness, a Bhiwandi resident, boarded the Kasara-CSMT train at Kalyan station. 'The incident happened when the train reached Mumbra station. Someone from the coach ahead of ours fell off after hitting a wall or something hit our coach. At that time, three-four people from our coach fell down and some from other coaches also fell. I think 7-8 persons lost balance and fell onto the tracks," he said. He said his friend Rehan Shaikh (26), who was coming from Kalyan to Thane, was injured in the accident. The police said the guard of a train going towards Kasara alerted the railway authorities about the incident. Those who fell off the trains were rushed to nearby hospitals, where four were declared dead on arrival, they said. Officials said around 75 lakh commuters travel daily by suburban trains in Mumbai. The morning and evening rush hours in the suburban network are among the densest in the world. In the morning, the passenger flow is towards the south of the metropolis where a majority of the offices are located. The flow reverses in the evening as people start leaving for home towards Thane and beyond on the Central Railway network and Andheri and beyond on Western Railway. The Railway Board has decided that all new suburban trains in Mumbai will have automatic door closing facility and the existing ones will also be retrofitted to have the mechanism, an official said. WHO SAID WHAT? Fadnavis said the railway administration is probing the cause of the accident, while his deputy Eknath Shinde said steps were being taken to help the victims and their families. The incident highlights the need to pay serious attention to overcrowding and passenger safety in the suburban railway system, said the other deputy Ajit Pawar. 'A high-powered railways committee will investigate the matter. The truth will come out, and if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken," Shinde said, responding to concerns over inadequate facilities for Mumbai commuters despite their significant contribution to the railways' revenue. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. 'While the Modi Government is celebrating 11 years of 'service', the reality of the country is reflected in the tragic news coming from Mumbai – several people died after falling from a train. Indian Railways is the backbone of the lives of crores of people, but today it has become a symbol of insecurity, congestion and chaos," Gandhi posted on X. He added: '11 years of Modi government = no accountability, no change, only propaganda. The government has stopped talking about 2025 and is now selling dreams of 2047. Who will see what the country is facing today?" NCP (SP) president Sharad Pawar said the Central Railway should implement measures like installing automatic doors in suburban trains in view of overcrowding. 'The Central Railway should increase local trains on important routes. Necessary measures should be implemented immediately for the safety of passengers," Pawar posted on X. 'It is well known that the increased crowding in local trains is the main reason. After such accidents, it is not right to blame the passengers for their deaths," he said. 'The Railways should just shut up about what they are planning to do because none of them have been delivered as far as Mumbai local trains are concerned. These are not deaths by overcrowding but murders executed by an apathetic Reel Minister and the government of Maharashtra," Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi posted on X. Mumbai Congress president Varsha Gaikwad said Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw should own responsibility for the tragedy and resign. Raj Thackeray said the railways infrastructure in Mumbai has collapsed due to the 'hordes" of migrants. top videos View all NCP (SP) leader Jitendra Awhad ridiculed the proposal for installing automatic doors in suburban trains, claiming commuters will suffocate due to this facility.
