Mumbra Train Accident: A passenger's bag hit bunch of commuters, and we fell down— survivors tell police

Thane Government Railway Police (GRP) have recorded statements of those passengers who survived the fatal tragic incident near Mumbra railway station on Monday morning in which four passengers died while rest nine sustained injuries. Two of the injured persons are critical and are undergoing treatment at the Jupiter hospital in Thane. 'Atleast two survivors, who are out of danger, told us that a bag hit the bunch of other commuters and due to its impact we all fell down. And since both the trains CSMT-Karjat and Kasara-CSMT were on high speed, passengers sustained severe injuries, on felling down,' said a senior GRP officer to The Indian Express. 'The four who died had sustained serious head injuries and subsequent excessive bleeding led to their deaths,' the senior officer added. The Thane railway police have registered four accidental death reports and have handed the bodies of the deceased to their families and are further investigating the accident. 'We are probing into the tragic incident. We are in process of recording statements of the eye witnesses and injured passengers to know what exactly happened. We would check if there was any negligence. We would also look into if there was any error with the railways structural design. Railways too may be conducting an inquiry into the matter and if they submits report highlighting any negligence then accordingly we would file an FIR and appropriate legal course will be taken,' said M Rakesh Kalasagar, commissioner Mumbai Railway Police. Another senior GRP officer said that such big local train accident did not occur in Mumbai ever. A GRP officer said there is a possibility that the tracks got pushed down a little due to the recent heavy rainfall in the area, tilting the trains a little more when passed through the curve, eventually reducing the buffer safety distance between trains, the officer indicated. Though the distance reduced between the tracks in this manner could be by a small margin, during peak hours, when passengers travel on the footboard due to overcrowding, it could lead to a small friction of passengers hanging in the door and could lead to fatal incidents. A thorough probe is, however, underway to ascertain the exact cause behind the incident.

Mumbai locals to have automatic doors, says railways as four die after fall

Mumbai locals to have automatic doors, says railways as four die after fall The Railway Board has decided that all new suburban trains in Mumbai will be equipped with automatic doors, while existing rakes will also be retrofitted with the system, a senior railway official confirmed on Monday. The announcement follows a fatal incident near Mumbra railway station in Maharashtra's Thane district during peak hours, where four people lost their lives and nine others were injured after falling from two overcrowded local trains. Collision on curve during peak travel hours According to police, the two local trains were crossing each other on a sharp curve when the accident occurred. Many commuters were hanging from the doors, and their backpacks reportedly brushed against each other, leading to a collision that caused several passengers to fall onto the tracks. The guard on the Kasara-bound train alerted officials to the incident. Emergency services rushed the victims to nearby hospitals, where four were declared dead on arrival. Victims and eyewitness accounts The deceased have been identified as Ketan Saroj, Rahul Gupta, Mayur Shah, and Vicky Mukhyad, a constable with the Thane Government Railway Police. Swapnil Dhanraj Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer of Central Railway, confirmed that all the victims had been standing on the footboards of packed compartments. One injured commuter recounted that the passengers fell after those on the footboards of both trains collided during the curve. Around 7.5 million commuters rely on Mumbai's local trains daily. Political response and public outcry Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis confirmed that an investigation is underway. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde said that support is being extended to the families of the victims, while Deputy CM Ajit Pawar highlighted the urgent need to address chronic overcrowding and safety issues in the city's suburban rail network. Responding to public outrage, Shinde stated, 'A high-powered Railways committee will investigate the matter. The truth will come out, and if anyone is found guilty, strict action will be taken.' Opposition leaders criticise government Congress leader Rahul Gandhi expressed condolences to the victims' families and used the occasion to criticise the Centre. In a post on X, he wrote, 'While the Modi Government is celebrating 11 years of service, the reality of the country is reflected in the tragic news from Mumbai… Indian Railways is the backbone of the lives of crores of people, but today it has become a symbol of insecurity, congestion and chaos.' He added, '11 years of Modi government = no accountability, no change, only propaganda.' Sharad Pawar, chief of the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharadchandra Pawar), also called for safety upgrades. 'The Central Railway should increase local trains on important routes. Necessary measures should be implemented immediately for the safety of passengers. It is well known that the increased crowding in local trains is the main reason. After such accidents, it is not right to blame the passengers for their deaths,' he said. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi offered a sharp rebuke to railway authorities. 'The Railways should just shut up about what they are planning to do because none of them have been delivered as far as Mumbai local trains are concerned. These are not deaths by overcrowding but murders executed by an apathetic Reel Minister and the government of Maharashtra,' she posted on X.

On duty railway police constable among 5 dead in Mumbra local train accident

Among the five passengers who fell off a local train and died near Mumbra in Thane on Monday is a railway police constable who was on duty at the time of the accident. Vicky Babasaheb Mukhyadal, 34, who was attached to the Thane Government Railway Police (GRP), was headed to work in civilian clothes when he lost his life. Senior GRP officers said Mukhyadal was transferred from Kalyan GRP a year ago. 'He was a very smart policeman with good crime detection skills. He used to live in Kalyan with his family. The body will soon be handed over to them,' said Sudhakar Shirsat, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Thane GRP. Mukhyadal and four other passengers were on two local trains, one bound for CSMT and the other for Kalyan, when they fell off along with the others near Mumbra railway station on Monday morning, a GRP officer said, citing inputs from the preliminary inquiry. Seven others were injured in the incident. The passengers reportedly fell around 9 am while the Kasara-bound train, which started from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), was passing through the Diva-Mumbra area. People hanging off this train's footboard collided with the passengers who were similarly clinging on to another train that was passing in the opposite direction towards CSMT, causing the accident, sources said. The Central Railway authorities confirmed that another train was passing towards the opposite side, resulting in the accident. The Mumbra police reached the accident spot and rushed the victims to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Hospital, Kalwa, where five were declared dead. While authorities are trying to determine what exactly caused the accident, sources said it occurred because the train was overcrowded and passengers were standing on either side of its doors. 'Accident-prone area' A GRP officer said the stretch has become 'accident-prone' in recent years, especially for fast-moving trains. There is a possibility that the tracks got pushed down a little due to the recent heavy rainfall in the area, eventually reducing the distance between trains, the officer indicated. Though the distance reduced between the tracks in this manner could be by a small margin, during peak hours, when passengers travel on the footboard due to crowding, it could lead to fatal incidents. A thorough probe is, however, underway to ascertain the exact cause behind the incident. Following the accident, the Railway Board announced that all trains being manufactured for the Mumbai Suburban region will have an automatic door-closing feature. Rakes that are in service will also be redesigned, and the same feature will be added.
